Improvement in India-China ties will aid solar supply chain: Vikram Solar

Agencies Image used for representation An improvement in India-China relations will strengthen the solar supply chain for Indian manufacturers without reviving the threat of dumping, which has been effectively curbed by government duty measures, a top official of the country's leading solar panel maker said. Allaying apprehensions that better ties with China could weaken safeguards against cheap imports, Vikram Solar CMD Gyanesh Chaudhary said government policies such as customs duties, Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and ALMM guidelines have ensured a protective environment for domestic manufacturers. "Better ties with China are good for us because our access to raw material supply chains improves. But unlike in the past, when Chinese dumping hurt the domestic industry, today the government has secured Indian manufacturers," Chaudhary told PTI. He pointed out that the imposition of 40% basic customs duty on modules and 25% on cells, along with the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and Approved List of Models and Manufacturers guidelines (ALMM), has created a protective environment for domestic players. Chaudhary emphasised that while India's dependence on China for solar components was almost 100% when solar initiatives began, it has now reduced to about 80%. He noted that the domestic ecosystem is developing rapidly, with expectations that this dependence will decline significantly within the next three to five years."Chinese dumping has come to a grinding halt. As a result, more than 90% of our revenue last year came from the domestic market," Chaudhary the outlook for anti-dumping duties, he refrained from speculating on possible changes but added, "I would assume the government of India, with its strong domestic manufacturing push, will continue to secure local producers from dumping." Chaudhary downplayed concerns over US tariffs. Vikram Solar, which has had a subsidiary in the US for nearly a decade, is waiting for clarity on tariff changes before scaling up exports. "India shipped just 2 GW of modules to the US last year, compared to a domestic market of more than 50 gigawatts. Exports contributed only around 1% of our revenue. We are betting big on the domestic market. But with the strong bond between India and the US, we see global opportunities opening up in the future," he said.

Gold climbs Rs 600 to Rs 1,00,620/10 g, silver surges Rs 1,500

Agency: Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) Gold prices climbed Rs 600 to Rs 1,00,620 per 10 grams in the national capital on Thursday amid fresh buying by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association. The yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 1,00,020 per 10 grams on Wednesday. In the national capital, gold of 99.5 per cent purity jumped Rs 500 to Rs 1,00,200 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday. The precious metal had closed at Rs 99,700 per 10 grams in the previous session. 'Gold prices rose on Thursday, driven by safe haven demand and bargain buying after the price fell to a three-week low in the previous session. 'The renewed demand for safe haven was spurred by President Donald Trump's call for the resignation of a Federal Reserve governor, which raised concerns about the central bank's independence," Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said. Following this comment, the US Dollar retreated from its recent high, further supporting gold prices, Gandhi added. In addition, silver prices surged by Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,14,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday. It had finished at Rs 1,12,500 per kg on Wednesday, according to the association. In the international markets, spot gold was trading 0.28 per cent lower at USD 3,339.04 per ounce in New York. 'Gold is holding steady near USD 3,340 per ounce as investors await key US macroeconomic data, including jobless claims, PMIs, and existing home sales. 'However, the main focus remains on Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium as investors are watching closely for signs of a monetary policy shift, particularly after last year's remarks signalled the start of a rate-cutting cycle," Kaynat Chainwala, AVP Commodity Research, Kotak Securities, said. Meanwhile, minutes from the US Federal Reserve's July meeting revealed that officials remain cautious about inflation and the labour market, with most considering it too soon to cut interest rates. Spot silver also went down by 0.32 per cent to USD 37.78 per ounce. PTI HG BAL BAL view comments First Published: August 21, 2025, 18:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
