Indian court acquits ex-MP Thakur, 6 others accused of deadly bombing
Court says prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence against the accused
MUMBAI: An Indian court on Thursday acquitted a firebrand Hindu nationalist nun and former lawmaker, and six others accused of participating in a deadly bombing near a mosque in 2008.
The attack killed six people and wounded more than 100 others when a bomb strapped to a motorcycle exploded close to the mosque in Malegaon in the western state of Maharashtra. Seven people were tried on terrorism and criminal conspiracy charges, including former MP from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, in a case that dragged on for years.
The prosecution claimed Thakur's motorbike was used to carry the explosives used in the attack, and that she took part in a key planning meeting before it was staged. However, Judge AK Lahoti ruled Thursday that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence against Thakur and the six others. 'Judgments cannot be based on morals and public perception,' Lahoti said, according to Indian legal website Live Law.
Defense lawyer Ranjit Nair said the judge noted that the prosecution could not 'present any proof against the accused'. Indian parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi called the verdict 'disappointing', saying those killed were 'targeted for their religion'. 'A deliberately shoddy investigation/prosecution is responsible for the acquittal,' he said in a post on X.
Islam is a minority religion in Hindu-majority India, the world's most populous country. During the trial, India's counter-terrorism unit said the 2008 bombing was orchestrated to incite communal tensions, local media reported. Thakur, 55, spent nine years in jail before she was given bail in 2017. She later won an election after being fielded by the BJP to run for a seat in the central city of Bhopal. Indian election rules allow anyone to stand for office as long as they have not been convicted of a crime.
Thakur courted controversy when she called the radical Hindu assassin of Indian independence hero Mahatma Gandhi a 'patriot'—earning her a rebuke from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also raised eyebrows for claiming that drinking cow urine had helped cure her cancer and extolling the benefits of drinking a concoction of milk, butter and cow dung. — AFP

Marcos arrives in New Delhi on state visit MANILA: Indian navy warships have begun patrolling areas of the disputed South China Sea with their Philippine counterparts for the first time, Manila's military said Monday, as President Ferdinand Marcos departed for a state visit to New Delhi. While in India, Marcos is expected to sign pacts in such fields as law, culture and technology, according to foreign affairs assistant secretary Evangeline Ong Jimenez-Ducrocq, but all eyes will be on any potential defense agreements. Before departing Monday, Marcos praised the two countries' 'steadfastness in upholding international maritime law, including the UNCLOS', the UN treaty granting an exclusive economic zone within 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers) of a country's shores. The Philippines has previously purchased BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India, a weapon which has a top speed of 3,450 kilometers (2,140 miles) per hour. India, which has engaged in border clashes with China in the Himalayas, is a member of the so-called Quad, a group that includes fellow democracies the United States, Japan and Australia. Filmmakers try to cash in on India Pakistan battle
Indian filmmakers are locking up the rights to movie titles that can profit from the patriotism fanned by a four-day conflict with Pakistan, which killed more than 70 people. The nuclear-armed rivals exchanged artillery, drone and air strikes in May, after India blamed Pakistan for an armed attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. The fighting came to an end when US President Donald Trump announced a surprise ceasefire. Now, some Bollywood filmmakers see an opportunity to cash in on the battle. India tagged its military action against Pakistan 'Operation Sindoor', the Hindi word for vermilion, which married Hindu women wear on their foreheads. The name was seen as a symbol of Delhi's determination to avenge those widowed in the April 22 attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam, which sparked the hostilities. Film studios have registered a slew of titles evoking the operation, including: 'Mission Sindoor', 'Sindoor: The Revenge', 'The Pahalgam Terror', and 'Sindoor Operation'. 'It's a story which needs to be told,' said director Vivek Agnihotri. 'If it was Hollywood, they would have made 10 films on this subject. This year, 'Chhaava', a drama based on the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, a ruler of the Maratha Empire, became the highest-grossing film so far this year. It also generated significant criticism for fueling anti-Muslim bias. 'This is at a time when cinema is aggressively painting Muslim kings and leaders in violent light,' said Sen. 'This is where those who are telling the stories need to be responsible about which stories they choose to tell.' Sen said filmmakers were reluctant to choose topics that are 'against the establishment'. 'If the public is flooded with dozens of films that are all trying to serve an agenda, without the other side allowed to make itself heard, then that propaganda and misinformation enters the public psyche,' he said. Acclaimed director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra said true patriotism is promoting peace and harmony through the medium of cinema. Mehra's socio-political drama 'Rang De Basanti' (2006) won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film and was chosen as India's official entry for the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. IMWA Kuwait holds its 30th annual general body meeting
The Indian Muslim Welfare Association (IMWA), Kuwait, held its 30th annual general body meeting (AGBM) on Friday, July 18, 2025 at Rajdhani Palace Restaurant, Khaitan in the presence of office-bearers, executive council members, and general members. The meeting began with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Mohammed Kaleem Ansari, followed by a presidential address by Sayed Hanif Ahmad, reflecting on IMWA's three-decade journey of service and community development. During his speech, he highlighted the successes of the association under his presidency. Notable among those events was the highest attendance of students for Quran competition from different Indian schools in Kuwait, which is a record in the association's history. Yet another feather in the cap of IMWA was the introduction of a Family Counseling event held at the Indian Community School in Khaitan. The president stated that IMWA intends to continue this family counseling event on annual basis. The formation of the Ladies Wing and Youth Wing has helped the association discover hidden talent among its ladies and youth members, who assist the executive members in organizing the association's annual mega events. He further stated that IMWA is now a registered association with the Ministry of Awqaf. He concluded his speech by saying, 'IMWA has come a long way, and yet, our journey is only beginning. IMWA is not just an organization; it is a family bound by faith, service, and a commitment to upliftment of our Indian community living in Kuwait, let us continue to be proactive, work hand in hand, with sincerity and passion, to build a better, stronger, and more united Ummah here in Kuwait. Vice President Muzammil Malik delivered an encouraging message that was well received, he praised the performance of the executive committee members for their hard work in organizing various events, held successfully, he thanked the gathering and wished more progress and developments to happen for the benefit of its members and community at large. General Secretary Firdaus Alam Khan presented the minutes of the 29th AGBM (held on August 30, 2024), which were unanimously approved. He then presented the Annual Report for 2024–25, outlining key highlights: successful programs and events, outreach initiatives, membership engagement, partnerships, and the challenges managed during the year. Treasurer Mohammed Asif presented the audited financial statement for the period January 2024 to December 2024. Key figures included opening balance, total receipts, total expenditure, and closing balance. The financial statement was approved by the members after discussion and clarification. He said he was pleased to inform that membership increased by 3 percent during the past year. He expressed his gratitude to IMWA patrons and well-wishers for their contribution to the welfare of the association. The AGM also included a by-election to fill three Executive Council vacancies created by resignations on health and personal grounds. In accordance with IMWA bylaws, IMWA EC unanimously elected and approved by the members: Mahboob Ahmed Mohammed Khaleel Khan Asim Kidwai They were warmly welcomed into the Executive Council. The meeting saw active participation from members, including Jawed Anwar, Irfan Mohammad Khan, Kareem Irfan (FIMA President), and others, who shared ideas for IMWA's future. The evening ended with a vote of thanks by Israr Ahmed and a Dua for the community's well-being, followed by dinner and informal fellowship.
