B.C. inks trade deals with Manitoba, Yukon a day after agreement with Ontario

HUNTSVILLE, ONTARIO – British Columbia has signed two more internal trade agreements with other Canadian jurisdictions to boost trade and labour mobility, a day after a similar deal with Ontario was announced.
B.C. Premier David Eby says in a statement that the province has signed separate deals with Manitoba and Yukon, agreeing to work 'to remove trade barriers between provinces and territories.'
The statement says the deal signed with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew includes measures to increase the mobility of regulated workers and professionals between the two provinces, and allowing direct alcohol sales from Manitoba to B.C. consumers.

B.C. alcoholic beverages can already be sold directly to consumers in Manitoba.
The Yukon agreement signed with Premier Mike Pemberton focuses on the removal of trade barriers as well as the alignment of standards for regulated occupations.
The deal between B.C. and Yukon is in addition to a memorandum in May that the two jurisdictions will co-operate on possibly connecting their power grids.
'With these trade agreements, we're making it easier to buy and sell our great Canadian products to our fellow Canadian neighbours,' Eby says in the statement. 'This is another important step toward building a stronger economy here at home — one that's less reliant on the U.S and works better for people.'
The deals were signed at the premiers' meeting in Huntsville, Ont., where B.C.'s agreement with Ontario was made public Monday.

Ontario also announced agreements with Nunavut, Yukon and the Northwest Territories, which Premier Doug Ford said when combined with the B.C. deal would help Canada unlock roughly $200 billion in economic potential.

Two shootings in Calgary connected to Indian gang responsible for extortions in B.C.

Violence from a gang based in India has gripped the South Asian communities in Ontario and B.C. with fear. Extortions and subsequent violence have become an unfortunate reality among the relatively wealthy in those areas. Article content The gang's growing influence has now spilled into Calgary with two possibly connected shootings within four days. A video circulating on social media shows a group of men shooting at the Dreamers nightclub on 10th Avenue, S.W., on July 21, the responsibility of which has been claimed by associates of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Article content Article content Article content Article content The eponymous gang, whose leader is currently imprisoned in India, gained prominence in North America following a few high-profile cases, including alleged links to the 2024 murder of the Khalistan leader Harjit Singh Njjar, who the Canadian government has said was killed at the behest of the Indian government. Article content So far, no credible evidence has been provided by Canada for the latter accusation. The gang was also behind the killing of Sidhu Moose Wala, who was shot in India but also had ties to Canada, and a Mumbai-based politician. A prominent Bollywood star is also a target of the organized crime group. Most recently, Surrey has been home to a string of extortion attempts that have sparked fear in the community. Article content Article content In June, a businessman in Surrey who ran a workplace supply company was shot dead after two men engaged him in conversation. The motivation and the ties to the group remain unclear; however, a man named Goldy Dhillon, who pledged allegiance to Lawrence Bishnoi, claimed responsibility for the attack in a Facebook post. Article content Several prominent community members in Surrey, including Satish Kumar, who serves as president of the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir, have also been targets of extortion whom are being ordered to pay millions of dollars. Indian media have reported that extortion is a significant source of the gang's income. Article content However, police in B.C. have been reluctant to link these cases to the gang. However, these incidents have caused political pressure. B.C. Premier David Eby has called on the federal government to classify the group as a terrorist organization.

Japanese trade deal with U.S. creates lower tariff rate for vehicles than Canada faces

Article content A new U.S.-Japan trade deal reportedly gives the Asian country a 15 per cent flat tariff rate — providing a potential edge in key export areas such as auto manufacturing, where Canadian finished vehicles currently face a 25 per cent tariff rate. Article content United States President Donald Trump announced the deal with Japan on Tuesday but details remain vague, as no official text of the deal was released. Article content Article content Article content That is similar to other trade deals that the U.S. has announced in recent weeks, where the details remain undisclosed. Still, as Canada inches toward an August deadline on negotiations with the U.S., auto industry professionals offered mixed reactions as to how Japan's deal could affect the competitiveness of Canada's sector. Article content Article content 'If you're Japan, and you're looking around and saying where are my competitors, you're feeling pretty good,' said Eric Miller, president of Washington, D.C.-based Rideau Potomac Strategy Group, a consulting firm on trade policy. 'Autos are about a quarter of their exports, and the auto access was a significant piece of this.' Article content Indeed, according to the World Bank, auto and related exports accounted for about 20 per cent of Japan's trade in 2022. Article content Within Canada's auto sector, the agreement spurred mixed reactions. Article content Article content On the one hand, if Japanese-built vehicle exports to the U.S. face a lower duty than Canadian built ones, this could in theory incentivize some automakers to move production to Japan. Article content Article content On the other hand, that is considered unlikely by many within the auto industry who hold out hope that in the end, Canadian-built autos are likely to receive a lower tariff rate than Japan. Article content 'That's certainly the hope,' said David Adams, president of the Global Automakers of Canada, a lobbying group that represents Honda Motor Co. Ltd. and Toyota Motor Corp. among other foreign automakers. Article content He and others say that vehicles built in Canada, often in border towns such as Windsor, have far more spillover effects in terms of creating jobs in the U.S. than vehicles built in other countries that are separated from the U.S. by an ocean. Article content In reality, Canadian automakers are already paying below 15 per cent in many cases. That is because the Trump Administration adjusted its policies such that automakers can declare the value of any Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) compliant parts contained within a vehicle and deduct that amount from the total value of the vehicle subject to a tariff.
