Trump's tactical rant: Don't let it work

Mint6 days ago
The absurdity of Donald Trump referring to India's economy as 'dead" in a social media post, clubbing India with Russia for this diagnosis, seems to reveal some exasperation in the White House. The US president's apparent fury need not bother us.

If anything, we could take it as an endorsement of India's trade position, which has not yielded so far to unreasonable demands even as other US trade partners have settled for raw deals.
As if to dismiss Trump's description of our economy, commerce minister Piyush Goyal pointed out in Parliament on Thursday that it was seen as a bright spot in the world by international agencies and would soon be the third largest by size.

Goyal also made it clear that India will do what it must to safeguard its national interest. By setting the record straight and displaying poise, India has shown maturity and signalled that it won't get rattled.

As trade talks with the US have not been suspended, Trump's language seems like a pressure tactic. But New Delhi must hold firm in its quest for a deal that's fair and well balanced. A near-term setback in US-bound exports may be better than inking a bad agreement that locks us in, even if it makes Trump rant.

Sanjay Singh: ‘Support INDIA bloc only on SIR as it is a bid to kill democracy in India'

While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has walked out of the INDIA bloc, the party's national general secretary and MP Sandeep Pathak participated in the Opposition alliance's joint press conference in Delhi Wednesday to sharpen their demand for a discussion in Parliament on the Election Commission (EC)'s ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh spoke to The Indian Express on the party's position on the SIR exercise and its ties with the INDIA bloc, among other issues. Excerpts: Sanjay Singh: We have clarified repeatedly that the AAP is not a part of the INDIA bloc and our position remains the same. We only offered support to the Opposition over the SIR, which is an attempt to kill democracy in India. Sanjay Singh: Only time will tell. If there are similar issues of national importance which emerge in the future, we will take a call at the time over extending support to the Opposition. Sanjay Singh: The SIR is a matter of grave importance. More than 65 lakh voters have been deleted from Bihar's electoral rolls… It is an attempt to stifle the democratic set-up of the country. Why should the Opposition step back from its duty of calling for a discussion on it? Sanjay Singh: We will take it to the people. There is no other way. We will tell the people how their votes are being robbed by a particular party and make them aware of the BJP's intent as well as the consequences of lakhs of voters being disenfranchised. Sanjay Singh: The SIR will certainly be a core issue around which the party's Bihar campaign will revolve just like how we have made quality of education a part of our campaign in Uttar Pradesh. Both the campaigns are on the right track and are doing well.

Stanford University lays off over 360 employees, citing Trump policies

Stanford University said on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) it has laid off over 360 employees, citing budget constraints that it attributed to the federal funding policies of U.S. President Donald Trump. The Trump administration has threatened to cut federal funds for universities over pro-Palestinian protests against U.S. ally Israel's war in Gaza, climate initiatives, transgender policies and diversity, equity and inclusion programs. "Stanford is in the process of making budget reductions," a university spokesperson said in emailed statement in response to media reports on the layoffs. "Last week, many schools and units made staff workforce reductions. In total, 363 layoffs occurred." The Californian university said in June it had made a $140 million reduction in the general funds budget for the upcoming year due to "a challenging fiscal environment shaped in large part by federal policy changes affecting higher education." Last week, the Trump administration froze more than $330 million in funding for the University of California, Los Angeles, after alleging the university failed to prevent a hostile environment for Jewish and Israeli students since campus protests erupted after the start of Israel's war in Gaza. The Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) that UCLA leaders were preparing to negotiate with the Trump administration over the freeze. The government has recently settled its probes with Columbia University, which agreed to pay over $220 million, and Brown University, which said it will pay $50 million. Both institutions accepted certain demands made by the government. Talks to settle with Harvard University remain ongoing. Rights advocates have raised concerns about academic freedom and free speech over the government's actions. The Trump administration alleges universities allowed antisemitism during pro-Palestinian campus protests. Protesters, including some Jewish groups, say the government wrongly equates their criticism of Israel's military assault in Gaza and its occupation of Palestinian territories with antisemitism, and advocacy for Palestinian rights with support for extremism.
