In a first, Kuwait extends oil credit facility to Pakistan for two years

Arab News16-04-2025

ISLAMABAD: Kuwait has extended an oil credit facility to Pakistan for an additional two years, state-run media reported on Wednesday, with the development expected to help Islamabad manage its energy imports and maintain foreign exchange reserves.
The extension marks the first time that Kuwait has prolonged the credit facility for two years. The Gulf country typically grants Pakistan one-year extensions.
Expensive energy imports dominate Pakistan's import bill. Suffering from a prolonged economic crisis for the past two years, Pakistan relies heavily on credit facilities and rollovers to maintain its foreign exchange reserve levels. In February this year, Saudi Arabia agreed to defer a $1.2 billion payment on Pakistan's oil imports by one year.
'Kuwait has extended oil credit facility for Pakistan for another two years,' state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported following a meeting between Kuwait's ambassador to Pakistan and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik.
It said Malik thanked Kuwait for the 'special concession,' adding that the facility has been extended by Kuwait Petroleum to the Pakistan State Oil.
'On the occasion, the two sides agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector,' the state media said.
The Kuwaiti ambassador commended Pakistan's significant economic progress, particularly in stabilizing the economy and improving the investment climate, Radio Pakistan said. He expressed confidence in Pakistan's growth trajectory and reaffirmed Kuwait's commitment to deepening economic and energy partnerships between the two nations.
Malik stressed Pakistan's dedication to fostering stronger ties with Gulf nations, particularly in energy and trade.
Like most Gulf nations, Islamabad has cordial relations with Kuwait, which hosts around 95,000 Pakistanis. It enjoys cooperation with Kuwait at the UN, the Orgainsation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and other multinational forums such as the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Pakistan to unveil economic survey today as National Assembly clears federal budget schedule

KARACHI: Pakistan's finance chief, Muhammad Aurangzeb, will present the Economic Survey 2024-25 today, Monday, a day after the National Assembly approved the schedule for the upcoming federal budget, according to the state media. Traditionally released a day before the budget announcement, the economic survey outlines key socio-economic achievements and shortfalls of an outgoing fiscal year. It serves as a snapshot of the country's economic performance across sectors such as agriculture, industry, services, energy, information technology and telecom, health, education and transport. The annual document also reviews trends in major economic indicators including inflation, trade and payments, public debt, population, employment, climate change and social protection. Invitations for the launch ceremony at the Pakistan Secretariat in Islamabad were circulated by the finance ministry on Sunday. 'Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb will release the Economic Survey 2024-25 at a ceremony to be held in Islamabad on Monday,' the Radio Pakistan reported. Meanwhile, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) news agency said Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had approved the schedule for the upcoming budget sessions for the 2025–26 fiscal year. According to the schedule, the federal budget will be presented on June 10, followed by a two-day recess. A general debate will begin on June 13 and continue through June 21, with time allocated for all parliamentary parties in line with Assembly rules. No sitting will be held on June 22. Charged expenditures for the next fiscal year will be taken up on June 23, followed by discussions and voting on Demands for Grants and Cut Motions on June 24 and 25. The Finance Bill 2025 is scheduled for a vote on June 26, and supplementary grants and related matters will be finalized on June 27. The federal budget will be announced as Pakistan navigates a fragile economic recovery under a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. The country's annual inflation rate rose to 3.5% in May, though officials say the macroeconomic outlook has improved on the back of a stronger current account balance and increased remittances. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal recently said the government had earmarked Rs1 trillion ($3.5 billion) for development projects in the upcoming budget. Authorities have pledged to maintain macroeconomic stability, advance structural reforms and ensure growth translates into inclusive progress.

Pakistan, UK discuss strengthening cooperation in railways sector

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi and British High Commissioner Jane Marriott on Wednesday discussed bilateral cooperation between the two nations with a special focus on railways, state-run media reported. Pakistan's railway sector faces several challenges such as an aging infrastructure, outdated tracks, locomotives and signal systems. Poor maintenance and a lack of modern safety measures often contribute to train derailments and accidents. Notable tragedies include the 2005 Ghotki train disaster, which killed over 130 people and a 2021 train collision that left at least 65 people dead. As opposed to that, the UK has one of the densest railway networks in Europe with almost all major towns and cities connected by rail. 'Pakistan and the United Kingdom have emphasized joint measures to further strengthen their bilateral trade and economic relations, with special focus on the railways sector,' state-run media reported following Abbasi's meeting with Marriot in Islamabad. State broadcaster Radio Pakistan said Abbasi called for 'a comprehensive strategy' between Pakistan and the United Kingdom to develop and modernize the former's railway sector. 'He said Pakistan is ready to fully benefit from UK's expertise in modernizing the railways infrastructure in the country and improving performance of this sector,' Radio Pakistan said. Abbasi said the two countries would continue to work together on mutual interest railways projects that will benefit their economies and improve public transportation. Pakistan has recently attempted to improve its railway infrastructure to ensure economic growth and development. In March, Pakistan and United Arab Emirates (UAE) officials agreed to expand bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the railways sector. Abbasi had said Pakistan Railways is continuously working to improve its services through long-term agreements with domestic and international suppliers, emphasizing that Islamabad offers a business-friendly environment and presents significant opportunities for investors.

Syrian Government, Kurds Exchange Prisoners in Aleppo

Syrian government exchanged over 400 prisoners on Monday with the Kurdish-led authority as part of their deal signed at the beginning of this year, according to Associated Press. The exchange represents a significant move toward building trust between the Syrian government in Damascus and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in northern Aleppo. Mulham Al-Akidi, the Deputy Governor of Aleppo province, said that 470 prisoners were released by both sides. Al-Akidi noted that the exchange seeks to 'reduce tensions on the ground.' In March, Syria's President Ahmad Al-Sharaa and SDF Chief Mazloum Abdi signed an agreement to integrate the civil and military institutions of Kurds into the Syrian government. This remarkable step represents a significant gain for the new government that seeks to unify the country. Consequently, the clashes between both sides almost ended in northern Syria after months of fighting. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani has recently urged Kurdish-led forces to swiftly integrate into the Syrian state warning that postponing this step would 'prolong the chaos' in the country. The minister's remarks came as the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, announced that it was disbanding, a move described by Al-Shaibani as 'a pivotal moment' for regional stability. He also added that Syria is currently incorporating all areas under central state control and 'implementing the national accord with the Syrian Democratic Forces.'
