Isha Koppikar was stopped by the police after release of Kyaa Kool Hain Hum: ‘They stopped my car, saluted me'

Indian Express3 days ago
In 2005, when Ekta Kapoor's film Kyaa Kool Hain Hum released, it received mixed reviews. Yet, to everybody's surprise, it worked wonders at the box office and earned Rs 23 crore against a budget of Rs 5 crore. The film, starring actors Riteish Deshmukh, Tusshar Kapoor, Neha Dhupia and Isha Koppikar, created a cult and shot the stars to fame. Actress Isha Koppikar's character became a fan favourite.
She played the role of an inspector in search of a serial rapist. Unlike her other sophisticated roles, in Kya Kool Hai Hum, Isha played a local Maharastrian with a specific dialect and accent. In a recent interview, she recalled the time when a police officer stopped her car after the film's release.
She shared, 'I remember once a policeman stopped my car. I asked my driver, 'What happened? Did you jump the signal?' He said, 'No.' The fact was that these police knew my car by its number and they stopped me on purpose. When the car stopped, they asked me to lower the windows. When I did that, to my surprise, they saluted me. They said: 'We need a madam like you in our station.' I felt too good. I thanked them. Then they praised my movie.'
She added, 'I often feel that I have this cop kind of vibe: Isha 'Kop'pikkar. I often believe that if I had not become an actor, I would have ended up becoming a police officer.'

In the same interview, the actress shared her experience of working in the film. She shared, 'I loved acting in Kya Kool Hain Hum! I loved my character as soon as I heard it. My character ruled the film. My dialogues and dialect were fun. We had too much fun on set.' Though the film was promoted as an adult comedy, Isha said she didn't find anything vulgar in the script of the 2005 film.
'When Kyaa Kool Hain Hum was narrated to me, it didn't sound vulgar to me. However, my character was very clean. Back then, a film had released in Hollywood titled Miss Congeniality. My role in Kya Kool Hai Hum was more or less the same. I loved my role. My director, producer as well as the production house–it was all good. I never felt uncomfortable. And I am sure Tusshar (Kapoor) and Riteish (Deshmukh) would have thought about the role before taking it up. I can talk for the part 1 of the film. It was nice. After that, I don't know,' said the actress.
After the success of the first film, the makers went on to release second and third installment of the film in 2012 and 2016, respectively. All three films were directed by different directors. While the first and second part of the film starred actors Tusshar Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh, the third film starred actor Aftab Shivdasani with Tusshar. It was also promoted as a sex comedy film.

Ahead of crucial elections, AMMA imposes gag order

With just days to go for the election of new office bearers, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has directed its members to refrain from speaking to the media about internal matters until polling day on August 15. The gag order follows an escalating war of words between actors Ponnamma Babu and Mala Parvathy over the association's finances. Election officials have warned that strict action will be taken against members violating the directive. Sources say the move was prompted by senior actors, with both Mohanlal and Mammootty reportedly expressing disappointment over the public spat. Ponnamma had claimed that when former general secretary Idavela Babu stepped down, AMMA's account held only Rs 2 crore, which the current committee under Babu Raj grew to over Rs 7.5 crore. Parvathy countered that the figure was over Rs 5 crore at the time, even after settling dues for parking space near AMMA's headquarters, with additional funds arriving later. The dispute has been further inflamed by controversies surrounding Shwetha Menon , who is contesting for president. The Kerala High Court has stayed an obscenity case against her, which critics allege is part of an election-time smear campaign. Cuckoo Parameswaran, another candidate, has lodged a complaint with the State Police chief alleging her name is being dragged into the "memory card" controversy and that she is facing severe cyberattacks. She accused Babu Raj and his associates of orchestrating the campaign. Parvathy also alleged that Babu Raj's camp is working with YouTubers who produce content in his favour, while ignoring key issues such as pursuing the memory card case with the police or questioning the charges against Shwetha Menon. "If I stay silent, their version will prevail. This matter must go to law enforcement for a clear resolution. Shwetha and Cuckoo are not guilty -- they are victims of an election-time mudslinging campaign," she said. The August 15 polls will see Shwetha Menon face Devan for president. Other key posts are being contested by multiple candidates, except joint secretary, where Anziba Hasan has been elected unopposed.

Box Office: Mohit Suri's Saiyaara crosses Mohanlal led Empuraan to emerge highest grossing Indian movie of 2025 internationally

Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri and starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda among others is one of India's biggest blockbusters in recent times. The movie's collections are spectacular in India as well as internationally. Infact, it is not wrong to say that Saiyaara is a bigger blockbuster internationally, than in India. Today, that is on its 23rd day, Mohit Suri's rom-com has crossed Empuraan (USD 16.90 million) to emerge as India's highest grossing movie of 2025, internationally. Saiyaara Crosses Empuraan To Emerge India's Highest Grossing Movie Of 2025 Internationally Saiyaara has crossed USD 17 million today and it still has enough steam to get to USD 20 million. USD 19 million seems locked while USD 20 million will require the movie to hold well, even after the release of War 2 and Coolie. Holding after the release of War 2 and Coolie is certainly not going to be easy. Every day, since the third Friday, the overseas collections of the movie are coming higher than the India collections. The overseas collections have surprised one and all from the very first day and there should be no surprise if the rom-com crushes the abovementioned final estimates too. Saiyaara Is On A Crest Of A Wave In UK While the movie is performing exceptionally everywhere, it is at another tangent in UK. The collections of the movie, even on the 23rd day is higher than the opening day. It has become some sort of a movement in the country. A GBP 3 million looks very possible for the romantic-musical, and that would make it the country's 3rd highest grosser among Indian movies, only behind Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan and Jawan. Saiyaara Heads For A Lifetime Collection Of Rs 550 Crore; 2nd Highest Of 2025 So Far Saiyaara's global lifetime projections are at Rs 550 crore to Rs 560 crore. This musical has etched its place as one of the biggest Indian debuts of all time. This is the first time in 25 years that there has been a debut in Bollywood that has gone on to become this big. Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai is the last time a Bollywood debut made so much noise. Let's see which movie after Saiyaara can repeat that kind of frenzy. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates on Saiyaara.
