'My ex and I broke up then had to live together - what he did surprised me'
Hannah, 22, and Michael, 23, had been a couple for two years after meeting at 'pre-drinks' during their first year at Bournemouth University in March 2023. After spending every day together, the pair decided to move in together in September 2024 for the next academic year.
But just one month before they were due to move into their two-bedroom flat, Michael called off the relationship, leaving Hannah "really upset." With neither of them willing to find a replacement tenant for the flat due to their being "very stubborn," they were stuck living together as housemates.
Despite its ups and downs—and the pair considering getting back together multiple times—the lovers turned flatmates say they remain firm friends. But Hannah said it wasn't without its awkward moments—like finding each other on dating apps and bumping into each other on nights out.
The 22-year-old psychology graduate from Portsmouth said: "Michael was the one who wanted to split up originally, so I said 'you can go'. But he said 'no, you go'. In the end it was like 'OK, well I guess we're living together then'. Overall, it's actually been quite fun.
"I say to people that I'd much rather be living with him as he's quite clean and tidy, rather than living in a house of six people and the kitchen always being a mess."
The pair had new challenges in single life that most never encounter while still living with an ex. Hannah admitted that she'd found Michael, from Oxfordshire, who is set to finish the final year of his psychology degree "on Tinder a few times" and Michael found his ex-girlfriend using Hinge.
She said: "As a joke we matched each other on Hinge. I'd be out on a Wednesday for student night and he'd be dancing with a girl, and he'll turn around and come with me.
"Talking about it makes you realise how funny it is. One time, on Valentine's Day, I was like 'right, I'm having a girls' night' and he served us pizzas dressed up as a waiter."
The couple have considered getting back together, with Michael first bringing up the idea in March 2025, but it never happened. Hannah added: "It's been very confusing for both of us.
"At one point, we were thinking of getting back together. He always says 'we're soulmates' but I always say 'if we were, we wouldn't have split up'. I do think there could be a time when we get back together. I don't know, it's the unknown."
Michael and Hannah were far from bitter about the break-up, and didn't make life hell for one another in the flat. The 23-year-old said: "We have been living our lives outside the flat, but in the flat we'd do our food shop together. I was selling her Vinted stuff for her. She gave me £20 to take the photos for her."
The pair will be leaving the flat behind as Hannah moves home to Portsmouth, Hampshire, to start her new job as a behavioural support worker in September. Meanwhile, Michael is set to move into a new flat with five other boys as he completes his final year at university.
He said: "For me personally, I don't think a relationship is going to blossom this year coming up as I'm in my last year of uni. In the future, who knows?"

It's time to delete Tinder: Here's the real reason why dating apps are dead
Still, for years I've been the odd one out. Since Tinder first launched in the UK in 2012, dating apps have become the default. Whether in the hope of meeting 'the one' or just out of boredom, most single people I know have downloaded one at some point. And there are success stories. Several friends of mine met their partners on Hinge or Raya and aren't remotely embarrassed to admit it. One couple I know even printed the Raya logo on their wedding menus.

Luckily, there's still an easy way to give your wardrobe a mega clearout - and get £5 vouchers in the process. This is thanks to H&M Garment Collecting & Recycling scheme. The way it works is straightforward too - simply hand in a full bag of unwanted clothes from any brand at the tills in the store and you can get a voucher giving you £5 off when you spend at least £25. One person who recently took advantage of the incredible offer is Holly Grace, 25, who shared the process on TikTok. ''I had loads of unwanted clothes that I wanted to get rid of and couldn't sell at the boot fair,'' she said in the video. ''So I decided to bag up my clothes and take them to H&M where you can get a £5 voucher for every bag that you take in.'' What's more, she told fellow fashionistas on the platform, shoppers can do this up to a whopping six times every month - saving themselves a fortune. The scheme is great if you've been eyeing up a more expensive garment, such as a stylish autumn coat, and want to slash the bill a little. H&M takes the textiles and recycles them into other products such as cleaning cloths. Fashion lovers rush to M&S to snap up perfect pumps that are 'so pretty' for summer - and they come in various colours to match your vibe Clothing in better condition could end up being marketed as second-hand clothing. When dropping off the unwanted goods, there's no need to limit yourself to just H&M garments - these can be by any brand. ''I took Primark PJs, unbranded joggers,'' Holly said in the clip. ''You basically just have to download the app and present your carrier bags and then they'll do it for you at the till. ''They scan your little QR code on the Members side of the app- and then the vouchers will literally go straight on there.'' How to look chic on a budget Fashion stylist Gemma Rose Breger, and beauty journalist Samantha Silver revealed how you can make your outfits elevated without spending hundreds of pounds. Don't ever spend on designer denim: River Island ''always has such a great selection of fashion-forward jeans that follow the current trends''. The high street retailer offers a great range of sizes to fit UK 6 - UK 18, and three leg lengths - and prices start from an affordable £25. There are no rules for jewels: ''Pick up something at a car boot sale, or charity shop, scroll on Vinted & eBay, snap up something from the clothing section in your local supermarket when doing the food shop or check out high street clothing stores.'' Don't forget the pre-loved sites: With a rising number of second-hand sites, such as Vinted and Depop, there's no excuse for not buying - or selling - pre-loved garments. Gemma, for instance, has managed to get her hands on chic Chanel sunnies for a mere £17. This means that every time you spend £25 or more shopping at the retailer, you'll get £5 off - which you can use in-store and online. However, it's worth noting that some customers have warned you can only use one voucher per purchase - and they also expire. Holly wrote in the caption: ''Yes, I also have bags full for the charity shop.'' The clip has taken the internet by storm, winning the H&M fan a whopping 12k views in just one day. One person claimed that there's a rival store that runs a similar scheme. ''River Island does this also.'' Someone else chimed in: ''I'm not sure if still valid but if you make a new account you get £5 voucher too.''
