Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu on Thursday inaugurated the 76th state-level Van-Mahotsav in the Kanlog area of Shimla by planting a deodar sapling. The plantation drive has a budgetary provision of Rs 100 crore with a target to cover 9,000 hectares in forests.
The Chief Minister also launched the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna across all Assembly constituencies and virtually interacted with ministers and legislators and discussed forest conservation and afforestation measures in detail.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said Van Mahotsav highlighted the importance of forests, often called the Earth's lifeline.
'This year, around 9,000 hectares of forests would be planted with saplings that comprised fruit-bearing ones.'
He said the government has been working to protect and enrich rich biodiversity. These efforts would contribute to achieve the target of increasing 30 per cent forest cover by 2030.
The Chief Minister said the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna would not only promote forest development but also enhance public participation and strengthen the rural economy.
Under this scheme, mahila mandals, yuvak mandals, self-help groups and joint forest committees would plant and look after saplings on one to five hectares of designated forest land for five years.
This year, saplings are being planted across 1,000 to 1,500 hectares at a cost of Rs 20 crore.
An additional Rs 1.2 lakh per hectare is being provided for sapling maintenance, said the Chief Minister. He said the government is also focusing on financial discipline for 'vyavastha parivartan' and introducing reforms in the working of the Forest Department.
The officers were being encouraged to dedicate more time to fieldwork related to forest expansion and conservation rather than office routines. The Chief Minister said the government is implementing schemes that provide rural communities with self-employment opportunities near their homes, thereby strengthening their livelihoods.
He said the initiatives of the government in natural farming are also being recognized and appreciated nationally. He gave cheques for Rs 1,00,000 each to mahila mandals for sapling plantation under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna. Also cheques for Rs 50,000 each have also been distributed under JICA project to the beneficiaries for livelihood.

PCMC recovers 167cr property tax in amnesty period

Navi Mumbai: Panvel City Municipal Corporation recovered Rs 167 crore property tax paid by 60,082 property holders. Since the launch of the amnesty scheme, 37,519 property owners have taken 90% fine exemption with a day left (Aug 15) and collectively availed Rs 64.8 crore. A protest was held on Wednesday on the property tax. The scheme was effective from July 18 to Sept 20 but split into four tiers. Those clearing their outstanding property tax between Aug 16 and Aug 31 would get 75% rebate, between Sept 1 and Sept 10 would get 50% discount and from Sept 11 to Sept 20, a 25% waiver of the fine amount. Thousands hit the streets in Panvel to take part in a protest rally covering about 1 km between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and PCMC head office. Seven major political parties besides various social and other forums joined the protest terming the property tax levied as unlawful, impractical and intended to divert public attention. Kharghar Colony Forum president, Leena Garad, had appealed to the residents not to pay the property taxes even under the amnesty scheme. Later, leaders jointly handed over a memorandum to the PCMC chief, Mangesh Chitale. Talking to the media, Patil alleged that the ruling party had promised to not hike any tax for five years but started collecting the property tax with fine/interest. There is no rebate offered on the basic property tax but the amnesty scheme launched is only to provide relief on the fines/interest amounts. The parties have alleged that despite PCMC being a 'D' class municipal corporation, the property tax levied is equivalent to that of 'A' class civic body like Mumbai. New portal to help secure BPL ration cards within 24 hours

Bengaluru: The govt will soon launch a web portal which will enable those eligible to secure below poverty line (BPL) ration cards within 24 hours, food and civil supplies minister KH Muniyappa told the legislative assembly Thursday. The initiative is aimed at streamlining the application process and making it more transparent, while also ensuring the economically poor secure benefits under the public distribution system (PDS). "We will launch the dedicated portal next month and eligible applicants can get BPL cards in 24 hours. I request people to make use of it," Muniyappa said in response to a question from BJP's Bharath Shetty Y. "We are committed to eliminating ineligible cards," Muniyappa said. "Our earlier efforts led to some confusion and I request the cooperation of all, including the opposition. I also appeal to those who are ineligible to voluntarily convert their cards from BPL to APL." A BPL family in Karnataka is defined as one with an annual income below Rs 1.25 lakh. Benefits under the BPL category include 10kg of rice per family member under the Anna Bhagya scheme, though the govt is currently dispensing cash in lieu of 5kg rice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo A survey by the food and civil supplies department revealed that lakhs of ineligible people, including thousands of govt employees, had obtained BPL cards. The minister said this distorted distribution of benefits meant for the poor and put unnecessary pressure on the PDS network. In Nov 2023, Muniyappa had launched a drive to weed out fake and ineligible BPL cards, but it sparked controversy after several genuine beneficiaries complained that their cards were wrongly deleted. The backlash forced the govt to halt the exercise. Muniyappa acknowledged the issue, stating that political consensus was needed to resume the clean-up. "Eligible cardholders can reapply even if their cards are removed by mistake," he said. Highlighting the scale of the problem, the minister also said that Karnataka's BPL coverage stands at 75% of the population — a figure he described as "astronomically abnormal" compared with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where BPL coverage is around 50%. He was confident the new portal, coupled with a transparent verification process, would help ensure benefits reach only those who genuinely qualify. He reiterated that cooperation from all political parties and the public was essential to make the system fairer and more efficient.
