Fraser-McGurk earns opening reprieve with Short out

Yahoo20-07-2025
Jake Fraser-McGurk will be given the chance to open the batting for Australia again, with Matt Short ruled out of the Twenty20 series against West Indies with a side strain.
Australian officials have confirmed that Fraser-McGurk will open alongside Mitch Marsh in the first T20 on Sunday (Monday AEST), while Mitch Owen will debut.
Fraser-McGurk had initially been left out of the squad for the five-match T20 series after a run of low scores for Australia, before earning a reprieve with a late call up last week.
Short had been expected to open, but officials have opted to play it safe and send him home with the allrounder battling a side injury.
The Victorian is expected to be fit to play South Africa in a series of top-end white-ball games next month.
Owen is expected to bat at No.6 for the tourists, with Tim David out of the series opener with a minor hamstring niggle.
Owen opened for Hobart when he was leading run-scorer in last summer's BBL, but selectors are understood to view him as a power-hitting finisher.
"He is a really exciting prospect for Australia," Marsh said.
"A young imposing figure and appears to be a really nice young man. We just want him to enjoy debuting for Australia and hopefully he can win a few games."
This series marks the start of Australia's lead up to next February's T20 World Cup in the sub-continent, with 17 matches between now and then.
Nathan Ellis will lead the tourists' bowling attack with the big-three quicks all sent home early, while Marsh will not be used with the ball.
That will leave an attack of Ellis, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshius and Adam Zampa, with Glenn Maxwell and Cooper Connolly's spinners likely to come in handy.
"We don't want anyone to come in here and feel like they have to prove themselves," Marsh said.
"This series they come together as our attack and our unit. We have spoken about being really connected, and they'll lead the team."
AUSTRALIA TEAM FOR FIRST T20:
Mitch Marsh (capt), Jake Fraser-McGurk, Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Owen, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshius, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa.

China's 12-year-old swimming sensation Yu Zidi becomes youngest medalist in World Aquatics Championships history

China's Yu Zidi has already burst onto the swimming scene, but the 12-year-old made more history at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships on Thursday. Yu became the youngest ever medalist at the competition after being part of China's bronze medal winning team in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay in Singapore. Although she did not compete in Thursday's final, Yu was eligible for a medal as she swam in the preliminary race to qualify her country for the final. Australia's team of Lani Pallister, Jamie Perkins, Brittany Castelluzzo and Mollie O'Callaghan won gold in a time of 7:39.35, with the US earning silver in 7:40.01 and China finishing almost three seconds after the Americans in third in 7:42.99. Yu had narrowly missed out on an individual medal in the women's 200m butterfly earlier on Thursday after finishing fourth, 0.31 seconds behind third-placed Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia. She also finished fourth and just outside a medal position in the women's 200m medley on Monday, touching the wall 0.06 seconds behind bronze winner Mary-Sophie Harvey of Canada. She will have one more opportunity to win an individual medal at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships when she competes in the women's 400m medley, with both the heats and the final on Sunday. Yu's participation in the World Aquatics Championships has led to questions over the competition's eligibility rules. Swimming governing body World Aquatics has a minimum age requirement of 14 for the world championships, but Yu's times are so fast that she qualifies regardless. Brent Nowicki, the executive director of World Aquatics, admitted during the championships that the governing body will have to review its guidelines in the future. 'I didn't think I'd have this conversation, but now I think we have to go back and say, 'Is this appropriate?'' Nowicki told reporters in Singapore, per the Associated Press. 'Is this really the right way to go forward and do we need to do other things? Put other guardrails up? Do we allow it under certain conditions? I don't know the answer.'

AvaTrade Accelerates with Red Bull Racing: A High-Speed Partnership in the Heart of Formula 1

In December 2024, AvaTrade, the global online broker, signed its largest-ever multi‑year sponsorship deal to become an exclusive team partner with Oracle Red Bull Racing, officially launching in 2025. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. You're reading Entrepreneur Asia Pacific, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. Formula 1 - A Brief Overview Formula 1 is the pinnacle of global motorsport, blending advanced technology, strategy, and driver skill. The 2025 season features a record 24 races across five continents, with teams battling for both the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships. After McLaren's dominant performance in 2024, the 2025 season has opened up with heightened competition. Red Bull Racing - Team Profile & 2025 Season So Far Oracle Red Bull Racing, crowned Constructors' Champion multiple times in recent years, is led by star driver Max Verstappen and supported by his teammate Yuki Tsunoda as of mid‑season, following Liam Lawson's move back to the junior Racing Bulls team. Recent race highlights: - Australian GP (March): Verstappen finished 2nd behind Lando Norris (McLaren) in the season opener. - Japanese GP (April): Verstappen claimed a commanding win from pole in Suzuka, holding off strong challenges from Norris and Piastri. - Saudi Arabia GP (April): Verstappen took P2 behind Oscar Piastri, who took the championship lead. - Emilia‑Romagna GP (Imola, May): Verstappen earned his 2nd win of the season and the 124th ever for Red Bull Racing, starting from P2. - Monaco GP (May): Despite strong efforts, Verstappen could not win—McLaren's Norris prevailed, with Red Bull's Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls) scoring career-best finishes of 8th and 6th respectively. - British GP (Silverstone, July): Verstappen secured pole but McLaren dominated the race with Norris and Piastri finishing 1‑2. Red Bull struggled with setup and adaptability. - Belgian GP Sprint Race (Spa, July): Verstappen delivered Red Bull's first win under new team principal Laurent Mekies (after Christian Horner's dismissal), overtaking Piastri to claim the sprint victory and reaffirm his commitment to the team under its new leadership. Championship standings: - Driver standings: McLaren duo Oscar Piastri (≈234 pts) leads, followed by Lando Norris (≈226 pts), with Verstappen in 3rd (≈165–173 pts). - Constructors: McLaren leads the standings convincingly with ~460 points; Red Bull is currently 4th on ~172 points, trailing McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes. Red Bull's early season technical setbacks and leadership transition have challenged their dominance, though Verstappen's performance continues to be a beacon amid the turbulence. The team is now focused on upgrades to the RB21 and adapting to Mekies' more technical leadership philosophy.
