The announcement came just an hour before kick-off in their final game of the dismal season at home to Arsenal.
Russell Martin led the south coast side up through the play-offs last year but was dismissed in December, with Southampton going on to be relegated earlier than any club in Premier League history.
Southampton had been targeting their former assistant Danny Rohl, who will leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer.
But there is competition for the German who is taking time to make a decision on his future, causing Saints to move elsewhere.

Still, who wanted to become a coach after playing the videogame Football Manager in his youth, recently announced his decision to leave Lens in France where he also managed Stade de Reims as the youngest manager in Europe's top five leagues.
He said: 'I'm extremely proud and excited to have joined Southampton.
"There is huge potential here and we have a great opportunity to do something special.
'The project that has been laid out to me is very impressive and, all together, I believe we can build a clear identity and a very positive future for the team.

'I can't wait to meet you, the fans. I look forward to hearing you in voice, and feeling the energy and belief at St Mary's and beyond.
'I'm eager to get to work this summer and start building a close-knit group that can make everyone proud and ultimately get us back to where we belong; in the Premier League.'
Still will be in attendance at St Mary's for the home clash with the Gunners.
Saints new technical director, Johannes Spors, said: 'Will is a young, innovative manager who has already gained significant experience throughout his career, and we have been extremely impressed both by his track record and our conversations with him.
'What was very apparent in our discussions was the clarity of his philosophy and the identity he wants his teams to have, but also his willingness and ability to adapt to different situations as they present themselves, which will be an important quality in the Championship next season.
'We were very impressed by his personality and his values, and we feel he will be an excellent fit for the culture we are looking to build at Staplewood.'

PSG vs Inter Milan: Predicted lineups and teams for Champions League final

PSG and Inter Milan collide in the Champions League final in Munich tonight. A mouth-watering final awaits in just a few hours after an unforgettable European campaign this season. Paris Saint-Germain have never lifted the famous trophy but victory at the Allianz Arena would see them achieve an historic treble after they lifted the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France. They notably knocked out Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal to reach Munich and would become only the second French side to win the competition after Olympique Marseille in 1993. Luis Enrique has only one minor injury concern to deal with, namely Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who was forced to pull out of last week's cup final at the last minute. It is said the winger should be fine to start in Munich alongside Ousmane Dembele, who has 33 goals and 13 assists in 48 appearances this season. If Kvaratskhelia is fit, the only question mark will be over who completes the front three, with Bradley Barcola or Desire Doue vying to start on the right-flank. While Matvey Safonov started the cup final, Gianluigi Donnarumma will be in goal following his heroic performances in the knockout stages, with Enrique expected to stick to his winning 4-3-3 system. Meanwhile, Inter are hoping to bounce back after missing out on the Serie A title to Napoli by winning their fourth Champions League and first since Jose Mourinho's treble-winners in 2010. Captain Lautaro Martinez has not played at all since his side's epic semi-final win over Barcelona thanks to a hamstring injury. The striker was not even fully fit for that match but is expected to make his comeback in Munich, leading the line alongside Marcus Thuram in Simone Inzaghi's 3-5-2 formation. Benjamin Pavard and Yann Bisseck are hoping to be fit in time after struggling with minor ankle and knee issues, but only one of the centre-backs will start. Piotr Zielinski has recovered from a muscle issue while former Arsenal and Manchester United attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan should be in the line-up. Donnarumma, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes, Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz, Kvaratskhelia, Dembele, Barcola Sommer, Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni, Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco, Martinez, Thuram The 2025 Champions League final will kick-off at 8pm UK time on Saturday, May 31. Inside Man Utd's post-season tour - Fuming stars, farcical scenes, stag do claim

Manchester United flew out to Malaysia and Hong Kong for a post-season tour immediately after their disastrous 2024-25 season ended, and some players were reportedly angered at having to take part Manchester United stars have been left "dismayed" after being forced to travel for the club's post-season tour in Asia, with some forced to cancel personal holidays. The Red Devils jetted off for a 150-mile round trip to Malaysia and Hong Kong immediately after their last game of the Premier League season against Aston Villa last week. United had only just concluded a calamitous season that saw them finish 15th after 18 losses, while they also lost the Europa League final to rivals Tottenham that saw them miss out on the chance to secure Champions League football. ‌ When they discovered the club's plans to embark on a post-season tour so soon after a disastrous campaign, a small group of players approached the hierarchy to express their dissatisfaction, according to Manchester Evening News, with suggestions that some would refuse to join. ‌ United ended up bringing forward the flight to Malaysia after their 2-0 win over Villa on Sunday to 'reduce the possibility of last-minute withdrawals', with even injured stars Luke Shaw, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee boarding the plane. The report adds that some members of the squad were "fuming" that the club organised the tour after a gruelling and difficult 60-game season. There were claims by some players that the tour would be like a 'stag do', with some staff enjoying drinks on the 14-hour flight. On the first night there, players were allowed to head into the city of Kuala Lumpur - but sources say "nothing crazy happened", with players returning at a "reasonable time". ‌ The tour began in miserable fashion, however, as United lost 1-0 to Asean All-Stars, a team that had played one game previously - a 1-0 defeat to the Indonesia national team. Afterwards, there was "humour" on the team bus, despite being booed by fans. United did win their second game 3-1 against Hong Kong, which earned them a friendly trophy - one so insignificant it was carried to the dressing room by their press officer. ‌ There had also been farcical scenes that were widely mocked on social media after United's open-top bus ride around Kuala Lumpur, with Zirkzee, De Ligt and Ayden Heaven taking part. Fans have teased United for the move despite their dismal season, but United officials have insisted it was billed as a bus tour - and one that was lapped up by locals. The trip has not been disciplined as a pre-season tour and players were allowed to be more "frivolous". Alejandro Garnacho - whose future remains uncertain - headed out with Heaven on e-scooters. ‌ Meanwhile, Zirkzee was unimpressed by room service at the team's hotel so he headed out for a Thai takeaway, flanked by a security guard. Three players who headed out to Malaysia - Harry Maguire, Andre Onana and Diogo Dalot - were picked to travel to Mumabi, India for more commercial activities. However, they were happy to do so as it meant they were able to return to the UK sooner. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
