Obama mourns Cubs great Ryne Sandberg: ‘Class act'

Former President Obama is remembering Ryne Sandberg as a 'class act' following the Chicago Cubs second baseman's death. Sixty-five-year-old Sandberg died Monday, the Cubs said in a social media post. The famed baseball player had announced last year that he had been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. 'Hall of Famer and Cubs stalwart Ryne Sandberg wasn't just a great baseball player — he was a class act who never cheated the game,' Obama said on Tuesday. 'Everyone in Chicago — including White Sox fans — will miss him deeply,' he added. The former commander in chief, whose home city is Chicago, is a noted White Sox fan. But he's expressed admiration for the Windy City's crosstown rival before. Ahead of the Cubs' 2016 World Series win, then-White House press secretary Josh Earnest said of Obama, 'The president is a loyal Chicago White Sox fan.' 'But the president is also a champion of his hometown, and he has been pleased to see the Chicago Cubs play so well this year,' Earnest said at the time. In a statement, MLB commissioner Bob Manfred called Sandberg a 'legend of the Chicago Cubs franchise.' 'He was a five-tool player who excelled in every facet of the game thanks to his power, speed and work ethic,' Manfred said, recognizing Sandberg's '10 consecutive All-Star selections, nine straight Gold Gloves, seven Silver Sluggers and 1984 National League MVP honors.'

Phillies Offer Two-Word Response To Desperate Kyle Schwarber Solution

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies lost their series opener against the Chicago White Sox on Monday, just days before the trade deadline, emphasizing the final opportunity to make meaningful upgrades to the roster. The Phillies seem nearly certain to add a high-leverage arm to their bullpen, which has been shaky and will be without Jose Alvarado for the playoffs following a suspension. But the team could also use an offensive upgrade, particularly in the outfield, as Johan Rojas, Brandon Marsh and Max Kepler have struggled at the plate. "As the market starts to take shape, the lack of righty-hitting outfielders is jarring," Matt Gelb wrote for The Athletic. "Desperation could lead to unconventional solutions." If the Phillies are unable to replace a current outfielder with a meaningful upgrade before the deadline, Gelb suggested the team could move designated hitter Kyle Schwarber into a corner spot. Schwarber played left field against the New York Yankees on Sunday but has not maintained a regular defensive position for the last two years. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) More Cox/Getty When asked if moving Schwarber to left field for the final months of this season would be something he's comfortable doing, Phillies manager Rob Thomson offered a clear two-word response. "Oh, very," Thomson replied, per Gelb. "I mean, we did that in '22," the manager added, referencing the Phillies' run to the World Series three years ago, per Gelb. "It worked out pretty well, and I think he's moving better now than he did back then." Schwarber has been the Phillies' most dependable slugger this year, hitting 36 home runs and driving in 84 runs. Doing anything to affect his production at the plate would be inadvisable. But if Schwarber is able to solve the Phillies' offensive concerns by moving back to a regular defensive role, it could be the best move the team can hope for in its outfield with the trade deadline looming. Reds rookie Chase Burns achieves strikeout milestones, but still seeks first big-league win

CINCINNATI — Chase Burns has reached some elite company in his first six starts in the majors. However, the Reds rookie right-hander is still seeking his first big-league win. Burns became the second Cincinnati pitcher since 1900 with three straight games with at least 10 strikeouts against the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, he also allowed three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings as the Dodgers posted a 5-2 victory. 'I feel like every start I'm kind of learning and getting better,' said Burns, who is 0-3 with a 6.26 ERA. 'I mean, the numbers don't show, but you know, it's been really fun to go through the process and learn.' Burns — who had 10 strikeouts against the Dodgers — joined Raisel Iglesias as the only Reds pitchers with three straight double-digit strikeout outings. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Burns is the eighth Major Leaguer age 22 or younger and the first since Pittsburgh's Oliver Perez in 2004 to post three straight 10-strikeout games since the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893. He's also the seventh rookie to do it in three straight games and the fifth big leaguer to have at least 10 punchouts in three of his first six games. 'We're trying to build for the future with him and win now with him. I think the kid is doing a good job,' Reds manager Terry Francona said. Burns — the second overall pick in the 2024 MLB amateur draft — has faced some of the toughest lineups in the majors since being called up in late June. Two of his six starts have come against last year's World Series participants. His debut was against the Yankees on June 24 and he faced the defending champion Dodgers, Burns' second start was at Fenway Park in Boston as the Red Sox jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. The 22-year old went only one-third of an inning and allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits. 'Yeah, it's why I play the game, dream about playing (and) facing these guys like that, going against a lineup like that. So I'm having a lot of fun,' Burns said. 'I'm blessed to be up here, and I just want to keep learning and get better.' The one thing the Reds could help Burns with is run support. They have plated only four runs when he has been on the mound in his starts and in only one of his outings has he left with Cincinnati in the lead. 'You don't have time to sit up here and learn slow, honestly,' Burns said. 'The boys want to playoff push, and I want to be a part of that, so I got to go out there and perform.' Despite the record, Francona doesn't see any frustration from Burns. 'I think he's fine. He's a very mature kid or he wouldn't be here,' Francona said. It doesn't get easier for Burns. His next start is likely to be against the Atlanta Braves in the MLB Speedway Classic at Tennessee's Bristol Motor Speedway, where more than 85,000 tickets have been sold. The major league attendance record is 84,587 at old Cleveland Stadium on Sept. 12, 1954, when Cleveland faced the New York Yankees. Burns played two seasons at the University of Tennessee and went to high school in Hendersonville, Tennessee, at Beech High School.
