Hundreds gathered at a New York mosque on Thursday to commemorate a Bangladesh-born police officer who lost his life protecting his adopted city when a shooter attacked an office building this week.
Officer Didarul Islam "did believe in the American dream, not as something handed down but as something built with your own hands," Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed Islam's community as officers stood in formation outside the Bronx religious centre.
Officials and New York's Bangladeshi community members gathered to honour the deceased officer during a service that highlighted his dedication to family, heritage and public service.
The 36-year-old officer, a married father of two expecting a third child, was conducting an NYPD-approved private security assignment in uniform when he and three others were fatally shot Monday at the Manhattan high-rise housing the NFL's headquarters and various corporate offices.
"To our family, he was our world. To the city, he was a proud NYPD officer who served with compassion and integrity. He lived to help others," Islam's widow said in a message delivered by a family member at the Parkchester Jame Masjid mosque, according to the Associated Press.
Officers positioned on nearby rooftops provided security whilst fire engines displayed a large American flag across the street. A vehicle carried a digital display showing Islam's photographs and a tribute from his union.
After immigrating to the United States, Islam established his career in America's largest police department. He viewed policing as "a blanket of the community, there to provide comfort and care," according to the police commissioner.
Initially serving as a school safety agent, Islam became a patrol officer less than four years ago and received a posthumous promotion to detective on Thursday.
"He could have gone into any other occupation he wanted, but he wanted to put on that uniform, and he wanted to protect fellow New Yorkers. And he wanted to let us know that he believed in what this city and what this country stood for," Mayor Eric Adams told attendees.
In Washington, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt commenced her briefing by conveying President Donald Trump's sympathies to Islam's family, noting he "made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of his fellow New Yorkers."
Imam Zakir Ahmed emphasised the officer's immigrant background and Muslim faith, whilst noting Islam "lived at a time when people like him are too often feared, vilified and made to feel like outsiders."
Following the service, attendees filled the streets for prayer, including Muslim officers, as their colleagues maintained formation behind them.
The officer's casket, adorned with US and NYPD flags, was transported to Totowa, New Jersey, for burial.
Julia Hyman, 27, another victim who worked at a real estate firm, was remembered at a Manhattan synagogue service on Wednesday.
Funeral arrangements remain unannounced for security guard Aland Etienne and executive Wesley LePatner.
Police identified Shane Tamura, 27, as the assailant, a former football player who recently worked in Las Vegas casino surveillance. Authorities discovered over 800 ammunition rounds in his vehicle and 47 shell casings at the scene.
Officials reported Tamura had mental health issues and found prescribed psychiatric medication at his Las Vegas residence. He mistakenly accessed the wrong floor whilst attempting to reach the NFL office. The shooting seriously wounded an NFL employee in the lobby.
Governor Kathy Hochul stated at Thursday's service that Islam "saved lives. He was out front," adding that "others may be alive today because he was the barrier."

US Justice Department open probe into Obama officials over allegation of Russian interference in 2016 polls

US Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered federal prosecutors to launch a grand jury investigation into allegations that members of the former Democratic President Barack Obama's administration manufactured intelligence on Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential elections. Also known as the 'Russiagate conspiracy', President Donald Trump had long claimed that the claims of Russian intervention in the 2016 elections was conspired by his political opponents in order to smear his image. However, it remains to be seen what could be the charges levelled in the probe and who would be charged in the 'Russiagate' investigation. Bondi has directed a prosecutor to present evidence to a grand jury after referrals from the Trump administration's top intelligence official, Associated Press reported on Monday. 🧵 New evidence has emerged of the most egregious weaponization and politicization of intelligence in American history. Per President @realDonaldTrump's directive, I have declassified a @HouseIntel oversight majority staff report that exposes how the Obama Administration… — DNI Tulsi Gabbard (@DNIGabbard) July 23, 2025 The Justice Department had said in July that they are going to form a strike force to assess claims made by the Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard about 'alleged weaponization of the US intelligence community.' Gabbard accused Obama and his national security team of a 'years-long coup' against Trump while releasing a declassified report which the Democrats claimed was false. Gabbard alleged that intelligence inputs about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election was politicised by the White House then led by the Obama administration to falsely link Trump with Russia. Trump reacted to the revelations made by the National Intelligence director and accused Obama of 'treason'. A spokesperson for Obama had called the claims 'bizarre' and said 'the allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.' Democrats discredited the findings released by Gabbard and said nothing invalidated a US intelligence assessment in January 2017, which said that Russia had sought to damage Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's campaign and boost Trump's campaign three months prior to voting in 2016. The assessment concluded that the actual impact of Russia's meddling with 2016 polls were limited and had no evidence to show if Moscow's efforts actually changed voting outcomes. However, Russia had denied it played any role during the 2016 US presidential elections.

Delhi: 5 Bangladeshi nationals arrested for forcibly trying to enter the Red Fort days ahead of Independence Day

Five Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for attempting to forcibly enter the Red Fort premises, Delhi Police said on Tuesday. The incident occurred on Monday, when security personnel at the monument noticed the suspicious behaviour of the five men, despite the Red Fort being closed to the public from July 15 to August 15 for security reasons ahead of Independence Day celebrations. Delhi Police further informed that all five men, aged between 20-25 years, are illegal immigrants working as labourers in Delhi. The police recovered some Bangladeshi documents from them. The probe is underway. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Gurugram Police detained ten individuals identified as Bangladeshi nationals for residing illegally in the city, police officials confirmed. Identification documents recovered from them verified their Bangladeshi citizenship. 'Ten illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been detained. Bangladeshi documents have been recovered from them. The process to deport them has begun,' Sandeep Kumar, PRO of Gurugram Police, stated. In related news, seven police personnel, including constables and head constables assigned to secure the Red Fort, have been suspended for negligence in their duties. As part of preparations for the programme scheduled on August 15, the Delhi Police conduct daily security drills. During a drill conducted on Saturday by the Special Cell, its team in plain clothes entered the Red Fort premises carrying a dummy bomb. The security personnel on duty failed to detect the fake device, leading to their suspension.

7 Delhi Police personnel suspended as dummy bomb goes undetected in Red Fort security drill

Seven Delhi Police personnel, including constables and head constables, were suspended after a dummy bomb went undetected during a security drill at the Red Fort, ahead of the Independence Day celebrations. A team of the Special Cell conducted a drill on Saturday in which they entered the Red Fort premises in civil dress with a dummy bomb.(AFP) The suspended cops, included constables and head constables, deployed for the security of the Red Fort "due to negligence" in security, ANI reported. Every year, the prime minister addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort after flag hoisting ceremony. The security drill is being undertaken by the Delhi Police on a daily basis as a part of the preparations for August 15. Delhi police told ANI that the drill was conducted by the Special Cell on Saturday, during which they dressed up as civilians and entered the Red Fort premises with a dummy bomb. "At that time, the policemen deployed for the security of the Red Fort could not trace the bomb, due to which they were suspended," the police added. In the weak leading up the Independence Day, security at the Red Fort has been beefed up with the area being declared a high-security zone. Independence Day marks the occasion when the Prime Minister hoists the Tricolour and addresses the nation. Meanwhile, a comprehensive security plan has been prepared for the area, ranging from a full-scale census of residents to the deployment of high-tech video analytics and advanced vehicle scanning systems. This year, for the first time, five types of surveillance cameras will be deployed in the days preceding the Independence Day celebrations. This will include headcount cameras, which tell the number of people in a frame and are designed to highlight suspicious objects. The police arrested all of them, and an investigation has now been launched. Talking about the arrested people, Delhi Police told ANI, "The age of all of them is around 20-25 years, and they work as labourers in Delhi.' Further, the police also recovered some Bangladeshi documents from them. All the arrested people are now being investigated, police added.
