Hit webtoon 'S Line' turned into drama series, exploring world with visible sexual connections, make its way to Malaysia's Tonton channel

The Star20-07-2025
'S Line', a Korean series that is currently creating a phenomenon and is being talked about across Asia and breaking new ground in South-East Asia, can now be watched exclusively on Tonton starting 11 July 2025.
Imagine if your past could be known – not through stories or rumours, but through a red thread that seemed to float above your head. Sounds strange ... Crazy... Scary... But this is the shocking truth in the latest Korean drama, 'S Line', which is now airing exclusively and first, simultaneously with Korea, in Malaysia.
A crimson thread appears above the heads of those who have had a sexual relationship. When one of the connected individuals dies, the thread vanishes.
This is the eerie premise behind 'S Line,' a webtoon by author Kkomabi, who also penned the original story behind the Netflix original series 'A Killer Paradox' (2024). In this world, the most private of secrets — who has slept with whom — are laid bare. Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference in Yongsan, Seoul, director Ahn Joo-young addressed creative liberties taken with the adaptation.
Ahn credited music as a central element of the show's atmosphere. 'The music director tailored the score to suit the fantasy-infused thriller tone and added variations to each episode's soundtrack to complete it,' she said.
'I hope viewers stay engaged until the end, focusing on how far the characters can change within the drama,' she added. 'It might be even more enjoyable if you imagine what it would be like if S Lines were visible in real life.'
Hyun-heup, played by Arin, a high school student, has seen the threads since birth. Others gain the ability through special glasses. Most people, however, remain unaware of the threads. Kkomabi said that the series version expands the universe of the original story with new episodes and characters. 'It was fascinating to experience the drama's unique charm,' they added.
The series opens with Hyun-heup's narration: 'There are things in life that don't need to be seen — no, things that mustn't be seen. I have seen these lines since I was born.' Believing that her ability caused a tragedy in her family, Hyun-heup isolates herself.
One day, she witnesses a murder in her neighborhood. Suspecting a connection to the mysterious lines, she leaves the house. She then encounters glasses that allow the wearer to see the threads, just like she does. The story grows increasingly complex as she becomes involved with Detective Han Ji-wook, played by Lee Soo-hyuk, who is investigating the murder, and a mysterious teacher Lee Gyu-jin, played by Lee Da-hee, who has no threads at all.
Recently, Lee was also Malaysia and had a special meet-and-greet session with Malaysian fans in Kuala Lumpur. The event drew thousands of fans at the famous shopping mall in centre of the city.
Lee, during the meet and greet session, himself, said that the series promises to be a groundbreaking event by itself.
The series also had its world premiere at the Grand Lumiere Theater during the 8th Cannes International Series Festival in May, where it was invited to compete in the long-form series category.
'S Line' also took home the Best Music award in its category — the first time a Korean production has earned that distinction at Canneseries. The score was directed by composer Lee Jun-oh, known for his work on films 'The Terror, Live' (2013) and 'Little Forest' (2018) and the Tving period drama series 'Queen Woo' (2024).
Arin, a member of girl group Oh My Girl and an actress who has built her filmography through series like 'Girl's World' (2020) and 'Alchemy of Souls' (2022), takes on a dramatically different role in 'S Line.'
'When I first met Arin, I saw a determination in her to throw herself into the character, even into fire if necessary,' said director Ahn. 'I felt like we could do anything together.'
Director Ahn, known for her 2018 indie feature 'A Boy and Sungreen,' which portrayed youth in a non-stereotypical way, makes her fantasy-thriller debut with 'S Line.'
'It feels surreal to win an award with a music director I've worked with since my short film days,' she said at the press event. 'Each episode has a slightly different concept, so we tailored the tone with variations in instrumentation.'
'I love the original, but I couldn't include every episode,' Ahn said. 'At its core, 'S Line' is about people. I tried to show how individuals change through the existence of the line.'
Meanwhile, Arin said she is just grateful to be involved in such a prestigious and amazing venture.
'I thought, if not this work, when would I get to attempt something like this?' said Arin. 'I really tried to show a different side of myself. I'm so glad the feedback has been wonderful.'
For more insight of the incredible drama, fans now can catch the show in Tonton. The series consists of six episodes, with the first two was shown on Tonton July 11 and then another two on July 18 and the exciting conclusion this Friday (July 25).

To top up the cast recipe, this season is also graced with special appearances by influential Malaysian artists such as Fadlan Hazim, Khatijah Tan, Joey Daud, Muaz Zabir, Josiah Hogan, Ropie, Fizo Omar, and many more. Viewers will be taken into the twists and turns of Nasar's (Andi Bernadee) life after going through a sudden divorce from Jannah. Now assigned to manage the Love Wave Hotel, a hotel owned by Tuan Joe that is almost bankrupt, with Datuk Sudin (Mark Adam), his life becomes increasingly complicated when he gets entangled in a love triangle between Farida (Riena Diana) and Haiza (Wanie Ooi). Nasar, who initially tried to keep his divorce situation a secret, finally came to terms with it when his status was revealed, but insisted on staying away from any commitment as he was still haunted by the trauma of his failed marriage. Things became even more chaotic when he was persuaded to get back together with Jannah, something he refused to accept. And what is the secret hidden behind the disruptions that suddenly keep appearing in their life and the hotel? Andi Bernadee, who returns to play the main character as Nasar, admits that it is not an easy role, let alone portraying the character of a widower who is full of internal conflicts. 'I have never been married, so trying to understand the emotions of a man who has failed in a relationship is challenging,' he said. For Andi, the character of Nasar also carries a meaningful message by showing the emotional side of a man, especially when faced with pressure in his career and personal life. "I also chatted and got information from friends who are married and have gone through this problem. I tried to delve into their lives. Some struggled and some just went on with life, and the sentence I remember the most is, 'life must go on.' I understand that there are definitely sad times and happy times. So I took an approach based on the script of this drama," added Andi. But the much-awaited series is not just a love story and comedy, but also touches on the various challenging realities faced by hotel workers, a life that is rarely given the spotlight on television. According to Riena Diana, who plays Farida, "There are scenes that are very close to reality, such as issues of physical and mental abuse in relationships, dangerous cosmetics, and career women who are willing to support 'living lizards'. Each scene in this drama brings its interpretation, reflecting the reality of society from the perspective of hotel workers." RM32 Fried Rice, RM11 teh o ais limau? M'sian says ‘No Fuiyoh' to Uncle Roger's overhyped eatery

A Malaysian man's recent dining experience at Uncle Roger's Restaurant has sparked debate online after he claimed the food wasn't worth the RM370 he paid. Steven Chan took to Facebook to share a detailed review of his visit to the Mid Valley Southkey outlet, listing 16 items he and his group ordered, which included service charges and SST. ALSO READ: Hong Kong content creator calls Uncle Roger's new KL restaurant 'worst dining experience' While price was a concern, Steven's main issue was the food quality. 'I ordered the cheapest fried rice for RM16. 'The owner asked if I wanted to add anything. I said garlic prawns, and that added another RM16 — but I only got five bland prawns. Total RM32. One bite in, and my heart sank,' he wrote. 'Even the boss double-checked the bill, asking, 'How did simple fried rice cost RM37?' Yeah, I want to know that too. 'As for the fried dumplings — sure, they were stuffed, but still felt way overpriced,' he lamented. 'I also ordered Uncle Roger's 'favourite drink' — RM11.50, and it turned out to be just a teh o ais limau. 'Sorry Uncle Roger. No Fuiyoh, No Next Time,' he stated. In conclusion, he advised others to skip the restaurant unless they're die-hard fans. 'Unless you're really craving for it, don't go. This is the kind of place you try once and never return,' he said. Since its opening in September 2024, Uncle Roger's Restaurant — founded by Malaysian comedian Nigel Ng, famous for his viral food critique videos — has received mixed reviews, with many diners pointing out long waiting times and inconsistent food standards. Steven's post triggered swift reactions online, with some netizens siding with him while others argued that he had the choice not to eat there in the first place. One user called Wong Ta Fat wrote: 'The expensive part isn't even the food — it's the 'IQ tax' that cost RM300, while the actual food was just RM70. I have no interest at all in trying these kinds of restaurants.' '6 plates of fried rice, 1 fried noodles, 6 bottles of water, 1 serving of satay, and 2 portions of mala dumplings. The average price per item came to RM23.18, including service charge and tax. Comparable to prices at a shopping mall — though the portion sizes, that's another question,' Vincent Yeap pointed out.

Influencer Kim Seri Accused Of Neglecting Her 3 Kids In Malaysia While Living In Korea

Malaysian influencer Kim Seri has been receiving negative press lately. Previously, the content creator was accused of travel package fraud after a woman and several colleagues were allegedly left stranded in South Korea due to Kim Seri's travel agency failing to provide return tickets. The case appears to still be ongoing, with little to no updates following the arrest of her former husband. While all of this was happening, the public figure has since remarried, this time to a Korean-Muslim man named Choi Amin. However, Kim Seri is now facing renewed backlash, this time over allegations of being a neglectful mother to her two children. The latest criticism stems from a post on Threads by an anonymous user who goes by @/user768592844621919, who questioned Kim Seri's parenting. The post insinuated that she had abandoned her children while enjoying a comfortable life in Korea. 'Doesn't she miss her kids? I mean, she's living comfortably in Korea, even got married to someone there, but it's a pity that she hasn't been a present parent. It's a shame that they have a mother who is a scammer,' the post read. The post quickly went viral, with many netizens agreeing with the user's sentiments. Numerous commenters criticised the influencer for allegedly failing to prioritise her children, accusing her of being an irresponsible parent. Others continued to brand her a scammer and claimed that she had brought shame to her family. At the time of writing, Kim Seri has yet to respond to the latest backlash. However, she has previously denied similar accusations, stating that it was her ex-sister-in-law who had restricted her access to her children. In other news, the Malaysian influencer is taking legal action against an individual who questioned the legitimacy of her marriage to her new husband. At this point, let's just hope there's an end to this whole fiasco surrounding Kim Seri. Sources: Threads, Instagram
