‘Squid Game,' Park Bo-gum and K-pop: Korea continues to attract tourists with K-content

July 30, 2025
SEOUL – Clad in the iconic green tracksuit from 'Squid Game,' Ria dashes through South Korean landmarks, pursued by guards in pink jumpsuits. But this isn't a teaser for a new season of the global Netflix sensation — it's a tourism promotion video that has racked up more than 11 million views since its release on July 3.
In another campaign leveraging the popularity of 'All of Us Are Dead,' two high school students and Jason, a friend turning into a zombie, take viewers through major tourist attractions, blending the show's zombie survival theme with explorations of scenic spots.
The videos are part of a broader strategy that taps into the global appeal of Korean pop culture to attract international visitors.

Park Bo-gum, who recently starred in 'When Life Gives You Tangerines,' appears in three separate tourism videos, including a music video for 'On My Way.'
Performed by Park, 'On My Way' is the result of a collaboration between the Korea Tourism Organization, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the K-pop industry. The track was composed by Kenzie, Andrew Choi, No2zcat, JSONG (Oceancave) and Kim Yoohyun. Kenzie, who also wrote the lyrics, is a prolific K-pop producer behind dozens of hits, while Andrew Choi provided vocals as Jinwoo, a member of the fictional idol group Saja Boys in Netflix's 'KPop Demon Hunters.'
Park said that one of his favorite places is the area surrounding Gwanghwamun and Gyeongbokgung. 'But I hope you'll also explore regions outside of Seoul. I'd especially recommend Busan, where I recently filmed 'Good Boy,' he added.
He also recommended Seoul's public bike-sharing service, Seoul Bike, officially known as Ddareungi. 'I love riding a Ddareungi along the Han River,' the actor said. 'If you haven't tried it yet, I'd really like to introduce you to it.'

This year's campaign also includes two videos promoting Korea's regional charm — one spotlighting the Gyeongsang region and another focused on the Jeolla provinces.
The video on Gyeongsang captures the energy and cultural richness of the North and South Gyeongsang provinces through a modern reinterpretation of the traditional sword dance, 'geommu.' Meanwhile, the video on Jeolla provinces showcases the region's serene natural beauty through 'seungmu,' a meditative and graceful dance. Both videos are set to a fusion of traditional and modern music.
Through these new videos, the campaign aims to showcase the regions' cultural and scenic appeal while highlighting areas still healing from hardship, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

These two regions were the sites of tragic incidents last year: wildfires that lasted for 10 days in South Gyeongsang Province in March and a plane crash in Muan-gun, South Jeolla Province, in December that killed all but two on board.

First launched in 2015, South Korea's tourism promotional videos, featuring top celebrities such as BTS, Lee Jung-jae and NewJeans, have drawn increasing global attention, particularly following the breakout success of the 'Feel the Rhythm of Korea' series in 2020. The series has since become a cultural phenomenon, with its videos collectively amassing over 240 million views across multiple platforms.
BTS also appeared on several 'Feel the Rhythm of Korea' videos in 2022, which reached over 230 million views on YouTube less than three weeks after their release.
Last year, South Korea welcomed approximately 16.37 million overseas visitors, a 48.4 percent increase from the previous year and reaching 94 percent of the pre‑COVID‑19 peak of around 17.5 million in 2019, according to the KTO.
The country aims to attract 18.5 million overseas visitors this year, up 13 percent from 2024. By 2027, Korea hopes to welcome 30 million international visitors annually by expanding cultural exports and enhancing tourism infrastructure across the country.

India's tourism sector gears up for the return of Chinese travellers

NEW DELHI: Businesses in India's tourism industry are preparing for a long-awaited return of visitors from China. India said last month it will resume accepting Chinese tourist visa applications for the first time in five years, amid an improvement in bilateral ties. Its embassy in Beijing said applicants can book an appointment to submit required documents in the capital, Shanghai and Guangzhou. While it is unclear how long the process will take and when Chinese travellers will begin arriving in India, some firms have made a head start on marketing campaigns to woo them. Era Tours and Travels, for instance, has already engaged Chinese content creators to promote its services and India's tourist destinations on social media. 'We invite them, take them around to Buddhist sites, and see what impact that has on tourism. Various initiatives on the government's part are also taking place,' said JS Nayal, director of the New Delhi-based tour agency. Photo-worthy landmarks include the India Gate in the heart of the capital, which marks the start of the so-called golden triangle tourist route. The itinerary continues with the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, and the historic palace city of Jaipur in the northwestern state of Rajasthan. WHY DID THE CHINESE STOP VISITING? Chinese tourists were once the core customers of Era Tours and Travels, representing nearly half of its revenue in 2019. The boom came to an abrupt halt for the company and other local businesses that depended on the Chinese when the Galwan Valley clashes erupted in 2020. The world's two most populous nations share a border that is 3,800km long and have overlapping territorial claims. The clashes resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers in the Himalayan border region. Relations between the two Asian giants plummeted to their lowest level in decades. Both armies deployed tens of thousands of soldiers in the mountains, while flights, visas and investments were suspended. The COVID-19 pandemic had already shut down the world earlier that year, further slowing progress on mending frosty ties. But relations have gradually thawed. China resumed visa services for Indians from 2022 onwards, and both countries in March this year agreed to resume direct air service. WORK VISAS, INVESTMENTS Aside from tourism, industry groups are hoping for quicker work visa approvals next so they can hire skilled Chinese workers such as technicians. Naresh Gupta, president of the Indo-China Chamber of Commerce, said there is also a push for more relaxed investment rules for some Chinese companies. 'Sensitive sectors like defence are where the government can be very cautious, but I don't think the government should take the same approach for all industries,' he told CNA. Although India-China trade has grown by roughly 56 per cent between 2019 and 2025, India's trade deficit with China has nearly doubled, leaning heavily in Beijing's favour. Gupta said Chinese investments could flip the equation to India's advantage. 'Investments in India should be simplified. A one-window system – which means companies can get their licences, approval from the Reserve Bank of India, permission to bring in foreign direct investment and pollution clearances within 30 days – will help,' he said. So far, India has ruled out easing restrictions on foreign direct investment for Chinese firms, signalling that ties – although on the mend – are far from normalised. Meanwhile, activities along the India-China de-facto border remain of concern, with a continued buildup in military presence despite troop pullbacks from some contested areas. Experts said easing border tensions is a cornerstone to improving ties. 'The border is important, so we need a specific agreement (between India and China), and not just dealing with tourism,' said Manoj Joshi, a distinguished fellow at Delhi-based think tank Observer Research Foundation.

South Korea to offer visa-fee entry to Chinese tourists from late September

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox SEOUL - South Korea will offer visa-free entry to tourist groups from China, for a temporary period from Sept 29 through June 2026, to boost foreign tourism ahead of an Asia-Pacific summit, the government said on Aug 6. The visa-free offer was first announced in March after China's decision last November to offer a visa exemption to South Koreans and foreign visitors from other countries. It also comes amid expectations that ties between the two countries will improve under the new South Korean administration of liberal President Lee Jae Myung. The decision to introduce the measure ahead of a Chinese holiday period in early October will help boost the domestic economy amid a recovery in foreign visits, the tourism ministry said, after a meeting to discuss measures to revitalise tourism ahead of the Asia-Pacific summit. South Korea will host a summit of leaders from 21 economies for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum from Oct 31 to Nov 1 in the southeastern city of Gyeongju, a gathering where Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump might hold separate talks.
