‘Special' Max Dowman, 15, adds to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal dilemma as he shines in same position as Saka and Nwaneri

THE future is bright at Arsenal – but Max Dowman has shown glimpses of why he could make his mark in the here and now.
Mikel Arteta
has had his eye on 15-year-old Dowman for the past 12 months and regularly introduced him to first-team training sessions.

Had it not been for regulation barriers in both the Prem and Uefa, the Hale End schoolboy would have made his competitive senior debut by now under Arteta.
That's how highly rated he is by everyone at London Colney, leaving most first-team players stunned by his progression, ability and unflappable nature.
Even Arteta has been shocked by how quickly Dowman has become one of, if not the, most talented teenagers in the country, and it will now be a surprise if he is not named in most of Arsenal's matchday squads next season across all four competitions they are involved in.
After travelling with the squad on their mid-season warm-weather Dubai camp back in February, the plan was always for Dowman and a select few others from the academy to fly to Singapore and Hong Kong.

No one on the outside looking in could have guessed how much game time he would get in their opening two games in Singapore against
A total of 55 minutes off the bench is not bad going, especially for someone who still needs to be managed, both physically with his slight and yet-to-develop muscular frame against elite man mountains, and mentally as he comes to terms with the pressure being on him as the golden boy of Arsenal's latest academy grads.
Arteta has a history in guiding young talents and transforming them into first-team players faster than most would predict, just look at
Ethan Nwaneri
and
The pair were footballing nobodies at the start of last season – mere hopefuls – who looked their age, perhaps younger.

Now, they have bulked up, matured on and off the pitch and look like Prem regulars, and in Lewis-Skelly's case, potentially England's first-choice left-back at next summer's World Cup.
Arteta has known when to push them and when to give them some time away from the spotlight, a crucial period of development for any teenager adjusting to Prem football.

Once Dowman makes his first Prem appearances, the clamour for him to push on at lightning speed will be huge.
We have already seen what that could look and sound like on this tour. In Singapore, his name has been chanted at every game and he was hounded for autographs at the open training at the Singapore National Stadium.
Arteta will have to be the party pooper more often than not in the early months of the season, but should he perform like he has done against Milan and Newcastle, the handbrake may have to come off sooner than expected.
His touch, turn and dribble past several Newcastle players and into the box to earn a match-winning penalty in the final ten minutes last weekend shows what he can do against experienced players nearly twice his age.

Arteta has used Dowman off the right so far, a position the youngster has played a lot in for the youth teams for club and country, cutting in and shooting – often scoring – with his left foot.
There will be a method to Arteta's thinking – being on the wing gives Dowman some breathing space during games as he continues his adaptation.

He may eventually move into a more central position over the next few years, but Arteta likes his young players trying out different roles to aid their learning and to give him more options when picking squads.
Nwaneri played in a midfield three last season, but also on the right in Bukayo Saka's three-month injury absence, and Arteta has spoken previously of the 18-year-old potentially becoming a No9 later down the line.
Dowman could now start his first senior
That's how quickly Dowman is progressing. Arteta called him 'special' after the Toon outing, and the Spanish coach does not chuck praise like that lightly.

We must be careful not to hype up too soon someone who has not yet turned 16, but it is hard not to when he is getting better with every minute he plays around world class players while showing he has the guts to step up in penalty shoot-outs, albeit a friendly one against Milan last week.

Last March, Rice claimed he was the 'best 15-year-old in the country'.
With a loan move unlikely next season, Dowman is set to be a regular face on the bench as Arteta plots the talented kid's path from a nobody to a special somebody.

Katie McCabe opens up on relationship with Vera Pauw two years after World Cup

Katie McCabe played down the idea that there is any bad blood between herself and former Ireland manager Vera Pauw and said that any clash they had was 'normal'. The Ireland captain publicly disagreed with Pauw in the final group game against Nigeria at the 2023 World Cup when she asked for a change. Pauw said after the match, "If Katie McCabe says that she wants a change, that doesn't mean she's the coach." The idea of a feud would grow legs with Pauw's imminent departure and McCabe sending a tweet with zip-faced emojis after the game, but the Arsenal star poured cold water on any speculation that there is any bad blood between the two. Speaking on Nicky Byrne HQ, hosted by the Westlife star, she was asked about Pauw. "I've had multiple conversations with Vera. She was the manager that helped us get to our first-ever major tournament. She set us up, we did our tactics, we executed our game plan to the best of our abilities, and we got to a major tournament. That will always be etched in history from a women's football point of view." McCabe opened up on the clash between the pair but described it as 'normal' and spoke highly of her former manager. "For me and Vera, the conversations we course, I'm not going to go into it, but yes, we clashed. But that's totally normal. You're allowed to clash when you've both got different opinions on things. She has her version. I think this is what's right, but ultimately we'll come to an agreement. "You're constantly having those conversations and healthy conflicts. Vera, as I've said, we did something incredible together, we achieved history together, and I'll always be grateful to Vera. "I think everyone thinks that Vera and I ended on really bad terms, but we didn't. I thanked her for everything she'd done, she thanked me, we wished each other well."

James Maddison injury update as Tottenham star set to miss majority of season

Tottenham Hotspur's creative midfielder, James Maddison, is set to miss most of the season due to a severe knee injury. The England international encountered this setback during pre-season, and it has now been confirmed that he has torn his ACL and will need surgery. Last season, fellow Premier League player Rodri was sidelined for eight months following an ACL tear. The Manchester City star made his comeback towards the end of the season after being injured in an early season match against Arsenal. Maddison was representing Spurs in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle when he sustained the injury and had to be stretchered off. Thomas Frank confirmed that the injury was to the same knee which caused him to miss the team's Europa League final in May. "We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee," Spurs said in a statement. "The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul. His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team. "Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way." Frank said after the Newcastle game: "We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before." Maddison was seen leaving on crutches, and the Spurs boss elaborated on the tough situation. "Yeah, it's like in life and football, I think sometimes life and football can be brutal, but also sometimes very beautiful. So I think it was brutal in what happened to to Madders," he said. "It looks like a bad injury. Of course we don't know exactly the status on it. It didn't look good." The injury also puts Maddison's World Cup involvement in doubt. The seven-cap England international has yet to play for the national team since Thomas Tuchel took over in the dugout, but might have hoped a big season could have put him back in the manager's thoughts. Spurs will now need to decide whether to dip into the transfer market for a replacement. Morgan Gibbs-White and Ebere Eze have both been of interest in the past, while there have been suggestions they could move for Harvey Elliott as RB Leipzig weigh up a move for the Liverpool star. The injury news comes just one day after Spurs confirmed the departure of captain Son Heung-min. South Korea forward Son has moved to Los Angeles FC in a Major League Soccer record deal, worth roughly £19.5million.

Ronda Rousey's UFC return LEAKED with MMA legend already preparing for comeback against huge-name opponent

RONDA ROUSEY is reportedly planning a shock return to the octagon - nearly TEN YEARS after her last fight. The former dominant women's bantamweight champion walked away from the sport following her 48-second defeat to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 in December 2016. 6 Former UFC bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey was a pioneer of women's mixed martial arts Credit: GETTY 6 Rousey walked away from the sport after her 48-second KO loss to Amanda Nunes in December 2016 Credit: USA TODAY SPORTS 6 Rousey is reportedly training to make a sensational cage comeback Credit: GETTY 6 Former UFC star Chael Sonnen has made the bold claim about Rousey's fighting future Credit: GETTY Rousey has well and truly distanced herself from the world of mixed martial arts since her unceremonious retirement. The 38-year-old mother-of-two recently set tongues wagging by sharing training footage on her social media channels. Rousey's accompanying caption for the video, which showed her honing her once Olympic-level judo, read: "Martial art nerd s**t. And former three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen has claimed the Hall of Famer is preparing to return against the winner of the eagerly-anticipated women's 135lbs title fight between Nunes and current champion Kayla Harrison. He said on his YouTube channel: "Ronda Rousey, going to come back, and fight the winner of [Amanda Nunes vs. Kayla Harrison], as long as the winner is Kayla. 'Now this is a story, and let me tell you what part of this I can confirm. I can confirm the story came from Ronda. "In this space, it's always 'Ronda's camp, one of Ronda's people.' "I understand those things. But it was. 'So in other words: 'I'll return to fight for the title, if Kayla needs an opponent'…[but] that's not how comebacks go.' Miesha Tate says she'd beat Ronda Rousey if they fought again Sonnen, however, has his doubts about Rousey returning, adding: "I don't believe it's going to happen. 'It is the rumour, though…if the word gets to Kayla that Ronda said that, that could have some hard feelings. "Those two know each other, those two worked out together, supposed to have some kind of a bond. "And when Kayla finds out, she's going to be half flattered and half p****d off. "Ronda versus Kayla, not only will not happen, Ronda Rousey competing at anything at 135 pounds, also not gonna happen.' Rousey, who entered the WWE less than two years after losing to Nunes, was the first female fighter signed to the UFC and a pioneer for women's MMA. I was forced to leave fighting when I was faster, stronger, more skilled and had a better understanding of the art than ever before." Ronda Rousey on why she retired from MMA 6 Repeated concussions over the years prompted Ronda Rousey to walk away from the UFC Credit: GETTY She was at one point a bigger star than Conor McGregor and the face of the promotion. She defended the 135lbs strap six times before suffering a stunning second-round KO loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 in November 2015. Nunes would then usher her out the exit door in December 2016. Rousey has seldom spoken about her retirement from the sport. But she opened up on her decision to call it quits ahead of the release of her memoir, revealing that repeated concussions played a big role in her decision. She said: "I'd like people to understand my reasons and motivations behind things. "I was forced to leave fighting when I was faster, stronger, more skilled and had a better understanding of the art than ever before. "It was a really hard decision to understand, one that my body made for me."
