Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood became the third player to announce he will take part in the Home Run Derby.
The derby will be held on July 14, the night before the All-Star Game at Truist Park in Atlanta. Wood joins Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who leads the majors with 33 home runs, in the contest. Wood has 22 home runs this season. He's the third Nationals player to take part in the Home Run Derby, joining Juan Soto (2022) and Bryce Harper (2013 and 2018).
The 22-year-old Wood has 12 home runs that have been hit harder than 110 mph. It's the second most in the league, behind Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani's 13. Wood also has four home runs that have been launched longer than 445 feet.
Wood was acquired from San Diego in August 2022 as part of the blockbuster deal that sent Soto to the Padres.

Aziaha James scored 20 of her 28 points in the first half. Paige Bueckers added 23, and the Dallas Wings started four rookies in a 98–89 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night. JJ Quinerly added a career-high 17 points for the Wings (6–13), winners of five of their last seven games. The fourth rookie starter, Luisa Geiselsoder, scored four points. Second-year player Li Yueru shot 10 for 12 from the line and added 12 points and 11 rebounds. James hit five 3-pointers and had six rebounds and six assists. Kahleah Copper led Phoenix (12–6) with 33 points for the 11th 30-point game of her career. Satou Sabally added 20 points and Monique Akoa Makani 14. The Mercury have lost consecutive games after a six-game winning streak. The Wings made 10 of 13 shots with three 3s and were perfect on nine shots from the line on the way to a 32–20 lead after one quarter. James had 13 points in the second quarter and easily passed her previous career high of 17 points. Dallas finished its best half of the season with a 61–43 lead. Bueckers had 14 points as the Wings shot 7 for 13 from long distance and 61 percent overall and added 14-for-15 shooting from the line. Phoenix shot 37 percent going 3 for 14 from beyond the arc but was helped by hitting 14 of 16 shots from the line. Copper hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points in less than a minute, and Alyssa Thomas, who had nine points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds, followed with a layup to pull the Mercury within 67–63 midway through the third quarter. James answered with a three-point play, and the Wings pushed the lead to 82–71 entering the fourth quarter. Dallas extended its advantage to 18 at 92–74.

Mets Top Brewers 3-2 Behind Nimmo, Soto and Peterson

Brandon Nimmo homered again, Juan Soto came through with a tiebreaking single, and the New York Mets held off the Milwaukee Brewers 3–2 on Thursday night. David Peterson (6–4) rebounded from a pair of rough starts, tossing 6 2/3 effective innings to give New York's injury-ravaged rotation a much-needed boost. Pete Alonso added an RBI double as the Mets took two of three from Milwaukee – just as they did in their Wild Card Series during the National League playoffs last October. Next stop: the second Subway Series of the season against the crosstown-rival New York Yankees. Fans in the sellout crowd of 42,241 received replica Soto jerseys on Fireworks Night, and the $765 million slugger gave New York a 2–1 lead in the sixth when he grounded an RBI single off hard-luck loser Jose Quintana (6–3), who spent the past two seasons with the Mets. Alonso then drove the first pitch from reliever Nick Mears off the left-center fence for a double that made it 3–1. Andruw Monasterio hit his first homer this year off Peterson in the seventh, but the Mets hung on for their second consecutive victory after losing 14 of 17. Ryne Stanek got four straight outs, ending the eighth with a primal scream after striking out all three batters in the inning. Edwin Díaz fanned two in a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 19 opportunities. Nimmo, who hit a grand slam Wednesday night off Brewers rookie sensation Jacob Misiorowski, connected for a solo shot in the second to put New York in front. Caleb Durbin tied it with a run-scoring infield single in the fourth. The first pitch was delayed 37 minutes by rain. Key moment: Díaz gave up a one-out single in the ninth to pinch-hitter Christian Yelich, who then got caught stealing. Yelich was initially ruled safe at second base before the call was overturned following a replay review. Key stat: Soto, the NL player of the month for June, began the night batting only .145 with runners in scoring position. Up next: Milwaukee RHP Quinn Priester (6–2, 3.35 ERA) starts Friday night in Miami against RHP Sandy Alcantara (4–8, 6.98), the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner. The Mets were undecided on a starter for their Subway Series opener against the Yankees at Citi Field.

Trump Wants To Celebrate 250 Years Of Independence With A UFC Fight At The White House

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he's thinking of staging a UFC match on the White House grounds with upward of 20,000 spectators to celebrate 250 years of American independence. 'We have a lot of land there,' said Trump, a UFC enthusiast who has attended several of its mixed martial arts matches in recent months and is close friends with Dana White, the league's president. Trump announced his plan in Iowa during the kickoff for a year's worth of festivities to celebrate America's 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. The Republican president also announced a culminating festival on the National Mall in Washington and a separate athletic competition featuring high school athletes from across the country. 'So every one of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of America 250. And I even think we're going to have a UFC fight,' Trump said. 'Think of this: on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of land there,' he said, adding that it would be a full fight with 20,000 to 25,000 people. A White House spokesperson said they had no details to share beyond the president's announcement. Trump has recently enjoyed standing ovations and cage-side seats for several UFC fights, including an appearance immediately after his 2024 reelection and another just last month alongside White for two championship fights.
