After TDP, DMK suggests EC to allow Aadhaar, ration cards as valid date of birth proofs
The DMK's suggestion also comes days after the Supreme Court on July 10, while hearing a batch of petitions challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar, urged the poll body to consider allowing voters to furnish Aadhaar cards, voter IDs and ration cards as valid documents to prove their date and place of birth. The apex court asked the EC to file its counter-affidavit by July 21.
A DMK delegation, headed by party MP N R Elango met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, and election commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, as a part of the EC's meetings with national and state parties to take feedback on further strengthening electoral processes.
Terming the meeting with the EC as 'fruitful' on social media, Elango said the poll panel assured that it would look into four of the five suggestions that the party had made. On the inclusion of Aadhaar, the MP said that the EC said the matter was sub-judice.
As reported by The Indian Express, the EC on July 5 wrote to Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states, directing them to begin preparations for a Bihar-like exercise with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date.
The DMK also urged the EC to implement its May 1 notification, which seeks to allow names of dead voters to be deleted by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) after getting information and verification from the Registrar of Births and Deaths by the Booth-Level Officer (BLO) instead of waiting for a family member to file Form 7.
Claiming that no steps had been taken to implement this, the DMK in its letter said, 'Unless names of deceased voters are deleted, the purification of electoral rolls will never be complete.'
The DMK also called for better coordination between EC-appointed BLOs and Booth-Level Agents (BLAs), who are appointed by political parties.
According to Elango, the DMK was informed that the EC was in the process of translating its handbooks and manuals into Tamil and other official languages.
Claiming that the new process of counting postal votes was 'causing confusion', the Stalin-led party also wanted the EC to revert to the earlier process, in which the penultimate round of counting EVM votes was withheld till postal ballots were accounted for. This process was changed in 2019 and allowed votes from EVMs to be counted irrespective of the status of postal ballot counting.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal Manoj Agarwal has written to all district administrations directing District Election Officers to form teams of senior officers and conduct sample checking of all Form 6 disposals – which are used to add names to voters' lists – made in the last year. The report is to be submitted to the CEO's office by August 14. In the letter, Agarwal stated: 'It has been revealed during sample checking of disposal of forms received during continuous updation that in some cases provisions of the Registration of Electors' Act, 1960 are not being followed.' The letter further noted: 'Sample checking of less than 1% Form 6 disposals by EROs during continuous updation has revealed that two (2) of them had accepted a considerable number of Form 6 for fictitious voters. In all these cases BLOs verification was dispensed with, without any apparent urgency/requirement and similar documents were captured for a large number of application forms and their verification reports. Both the EROs have since admitted that they had provided user access to the ERO next to the AERO/OC Election in BDO Office/ Casual Data Entry Operators who had thereafter disposed of the Form 6 applications.' The CEO has also directed DEOs to ensure that OC Election staff in BDO offices and casual or daily-wage contractual data entry operators are not involved in the disposal of Forms 6, 7, or 8, or in carrying out any functions in ERONet. Reacting to the letter, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari posted on X: 'This latest memo from the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal to all the District Election Officers (DMs) exposes a scandalous betrayal of democracy.' Operation Sindoor is ‘Modi normal', no third party behind ceasefire: Jaishankar; Opp flags lapses
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asserted Wednesday that there was no third-party intervention in ensuring a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, making it clear that it was not linked to trade as claimed by US President Donald Trump. Intervening in the special discussion on Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam terror attack in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar castigated the Congress over its governments' apathetic response to the incidents of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. During his hour-long speech, he referred to the previous Congress-led UPA government's 'inaction' in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, saying 'there is a Congress normal… and a Modi normal'. 'There is a Congress normal, which I spoke about, and there is a (Narendra) Modi normal… The Modi normal is terrorists are not proxies. Number two, cross-border terrorism will get an appropriate response in our way, at our time. Three, talks and terror will not go together. If there are talks, it will only be about terror. He appealed for a full-fledged statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, and proposed the adoption of a resolution condemning President Trump for claiming credit for the ceasefire. CPI(M) MP John Brittas said that under the Modi government a new normal meant the 'celebration of failure'. 'Pulwama would be the biggest intelligence and security failure in the history of Independent India. There was deliberate, criminal negligence and you mixed it with hubris,' he said. Brittas recalled the resignations of then Union home minister Shivraj Patil following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and questioned the Modi government over its accountability over the Pahalgam attack. Review additions to electoral roll to weed out ‘fictitious' voters: Bengal CEO to DEOs
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has directed all the District Election Officers (DEOs) to conduct sampling of one per cent of Form 6 disbursed in the past one year to check if any 'fictitious' voters were added to the electoral rolls. West Bengal will go to the Assembly polls early next year. In a letter to the DEOs and DMs, CEO Manoj Agarwal directed them to form a team of senior officers to check the disbursed Form 6 in their respective districts and submit a report by August 14. 'Sample checking of less than 1 per cent Form 6 disposals by the EROs (Electoral Registration Officers) during continuous updation has revealed a considerable number of Form 6 for fictitious voters. In all these cases, BLOs verification was dispensed with, without any apparent urgency/requirement and similar documents were captured for a large number of application forms and their verification reports,' the CEO wrote. The CEO has also ordered that the OC Election, posted in the BDO Office, and the casual and daily wages contractual data entry operators should not be involved in the disposal of the forms or any of the functions and duties in ERONet, the electoral roll management system. 'The EROs have since admitted that they had provided user access to the ERO net to the AERO/OC Election in BDO Office/ Casual Data Entry Operators who had thereafter disposed of the Form 6 applications. While appropriate action in these and other cases is being contemplated, District Election Officers are hereby directed to form a team of senior officers and have the sample checking of all Form 6 disposals done during the last one year and send a report to the undersigned by 14th August, 2025 positively,' the July 28 letter stated. According to sources in the state election commission, Agarwal will discuss with the CEC on the timeline of conducting the SIR and the necessary preparations for it. Earlier, the CEO started the SIR training workshop for the Booth Level Officials (BLOs) from Saturday. 'The SIR may be held in the future in the state. Training will not take place again and again. Since the Assembly election is six to eight months away, we will not be able to conduct these training workshops again,' Agarwal had said earlier.
