Odisha: Murder accused on run for 24 years arrested

Berhampur (Odisha), Aug 12 (PTI) Odisha Police have arrested a 52-year-old man, who had been on the run for the last 24 years after being accused in a murder case, an officer said on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended the man, identified as Udaya Pradhan, from Chennai on Monday, as part of 'Operation Garuda' launched by the Odisha Police to nab all fugitives.
Pradhan, along with his two brothers, allegedly hacked to death a man, identified as Kaibalya Pradhan, in Keranditola village in present-day Chamakhandi police station area in Ganjam district on July 6, 2001 over a dispute.
Police had arrested Musha Pradhan, one of his brothers of Udaya Pradhan, the same day of the murder, while Udaya and his elder brother Pancham absconded from the village.
'Police had earlier made several attempts to arrest Udaya Pradhan but he evaded arrests. However, after receiving reliable information, a police team rushed to Chennai and nabbed him," Ganjam Superintendent of Police Subhendu Patra said.
The accused was working in a construction firm in Chennai by identifying himself as Ganesh, said Sabyasachi Malla, inspector-in charge of Chamakhandi police station.
The two brothers – Udaya and Pancham – had initially fled to Bengaluru after the murder but after a dispute with Pancham, Udaya had come to Chennai. Other members of his family, however, continued to stay in the village, Malla said.
His elder brother is still absconding and efforts are being to nab him, he said.
His younger brother Musha has been released from jail after completing his life sentence awarded by a local court for his involvement in the murder, police said. PTI COR AAM AAM ACD

Ganja worth Rs 40 lakh seized in Noida

Missing MP lawyer traced in UP's town on Nepal border after 12 days
A female lawyer and civil judge aspirant, Archana Tiwari, who was reported missing while travelling on a train nearly two weeks ago, was traced in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Khiri town on Nepal border on Tuesday, a police official said. "Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel finally traced Archana Tiwari in Lakhimpur-Khiri town on the Indo-Nepal border after 12 days of hectic search," SP (Railways) Rahul Kumar Lodha said. Cops are bringing her back to Bhopal and after recording her statement, details of the entire episode will be known, he said. Tiwari's kin earlier suspected that she was a victim of human trafficking and sought a CBI probe, but Lodha did not say anything about this angle. According to police, the last location of the 29-year-old lawyer was traced to Itarsi station. After that, her mobile phone was found switched off. Tiwari was a practicing lawyer at the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. She was also preparing for a civil judge examination. She left for Katni on August 7 by the Narmada Express train, but did not reach her destination. Tiwari's family members later lodged a missing person complaint at the Rani Kamalapati GRP police station in Bhopal. Police searched for clues in areas ranging from Rani Kamalapati station to Itarsi and Katni, and scanned CCTV cameras of stations and surrounding areas. Lodha said Tiwari's last location was Itarsi station.

Amendments to Uttarakhand anti-conversion law tabled in assembly
Agency: Gairsain, Aug 19 (PTI) The amendments to the anti-conversion law to make it harsher, with stringent provisions like punishment up to life imprisonment and heavy fines, was introduced in the state assembly on Tuesday. The Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill-2025 provides for a maximum punishment of life imprisonment and a heavy fine of up to Rs 10 lakh for forced conversion. At present, there is a provision of maximum 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000. More stringent provisions were being added to the existing law to stop conversion done through fraud, inducement or pressure, according to the government. The definition of inducement has been expanded in the bill to include gifts, cash/goods benefits, employment, free education, promise of marriage, hurting religious faith or glorifying another religion, categorising all of them as crime. It makes punishable the acts like promoting or inciting conversion through social media, messaging app or any online medium. under the bill, there is a provision in the bill for three to 10 years imprisonment for general violation, five to 14 years in cases related to sensitive class and 20 years to life imprisonment in serious cases and heavy fines. This is the second amendment to the anti-conversion law that has been in force since 2018. The first amendment to the Act was made in 2022.
