Where the Lions stand in post-draft NFL power rankings from NFL.com Hint: it's still very near the top
With the NFL Draft in the books and teams filling out rosters with undrafted free agents, rosters are pretty well locked in for the summer. Rookie mini camps are on the horizon and, before you know, teams will be fully together on the field. With a few days to take everything in, power rankings have been updated and we now have a better sense of where teams stand heading into May.
One of those rankings came from NFL.com's Eric Edholm. The Lions were already near the top of most power rankings before the draft, but where does Edholm have them after the draft?
The answer is at No. 5.
Wrote Edholm: "It's becoming easier, with each passing draft, to identify whom the Lions will like as prospects. Dan Campbell always talks about their types of guys, and the 2025 draft class only reinforced that archetype more. Defensive tackle Tyleik Williams is a bull and a handful up front. Tate Ratledge and Miles Frazier are two street-tough guards. The Day 3 picks were a mix of upside and floor. And then there's the curious case of Isaac TeSlaa, the ultimate draft guy's draft guy. TeSlaa wasn't a top-100 prospect for me, but he absolutely makes sense in Detroit as a stalk blocker, a red-zone weapon and another target with some length and juice. Many people viewed him as an early Day 3 option, though, so it's worth noting what the Lions gave up to select him 70th overall: two third-round picks next year. That's more than just, you know, a case of Faygo and a box of Better Made chips. But that's what I am talking about with the Lions: They don't care how other teams value players, only how they value them, and that approach has served this franchise beautifully over Brad Holmes' five drafts."
The Lions are the second NFC team in this group. The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles sit atop the rankings, followed by three AFC teams -- No. 2 Baltimore Ravens, No. 3 Kansas City Chiefs, No. 4 Buffalo Bills.
With the team healthy, the Lions will be hungry to finally get over the hump this season and reach Super Bowl LX. The schedule will be quite the grind for Lions. The Lions are scheduled to play the top three teams in these rankings (Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs) all on the road. They will also visit the Washington Commanders, who checked in right below the Lions at No. 6.
Add in No. 7 Tampa Bay (home) and two games each against No. 9 Green Bay and No. 10 Minnesota, it adds up to a very tough road to get back to the No. 1 seed in the NFC. But the talent is there in Detroit to make take on that road.

This offseason, the San Francisco 49ers made a few changes at wide receiver, dealing Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders, signing Demarcus Robinson in free agency and allowing Chris Conley to sit on the market unsigned. On top of those moves, San Francisco placed Trent Taylor on injured reserve, ending his season, and they'll likely be without Brandon Aiyuk to start the year after he suffered a torn ACL in the team's Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024. Advertisement With that, the 49ers are looking for someone to step up and be a reliable target for Purdy this season, especially early on if Aiyuk's not ready or not feeling himself. While there are plenty of options in San Francisco's wide receiver room, rookie wideout Jordan Watkins could be the man for the job. Watkins, 23, was a three-star recruit out of Butler Traditional High School in Louisville, Kentucky, before committing to Louisville in 2019. Over his two years with the Cardinals, he caught 43 passes for 586 yards and four touchdowns. However, in 2022, Watkins transferred to Ole Miss and appeared in 38 games over his final three seasons, recording 142 receptions for 2,096 yards and 14 touchdowns. Now, after San Francisco used a fourth-round pick on him, Watkins is impressing his position coach, Leonard Hankerson, who had a five-year NFL career of his own as a wide receiver. Advertisement "He has the speed to win at the first level," Hankerson said. "He's able to take the top off the defense and get downfield. On top of that, he has great hands. Just his mentality after the catch, he's always trying to score, which we pride ourselves on, guys who can run with the ball in their hands. He has done that. He's still raw, but he has that "it" factor, that speed that we could use. I'm excited about having him here. He's taking a step in the right direction and I'm excited to see where he can get to." Just because Hankerson likes what he see, that doesn't mean Watkins is a complete player. "[Route-running] that's an area where he still has to improve," Hankerson said. "Getting out of the cuts a little bit quicker. With speed guys, because they're moving at a faster pace, it takes them a little bit of time to get in and out of breaks. We're always talking about speed. As long as I can get out of the cut faster than the defender, it doesn't matter how long it takes me. But we want that speed and he has that." In an ideal world Watkins starts the season off a San Francisco's fourth or fifth receiver on the depth chart, but he may be given more opportunities throughout training camp and into the preseason. If he makes the most of them, he could earn himself a larger role in his rookie season. 49ers center earns amazing compliment from his position coach
The San Francisco 49ers had a rough season in 2024, finishing with in fourth place in the NFC West with a 6-11 record. Their .353 winning percentage was their worst since 2018 when they went 4-12 (.250), which somehow still wasn't bad enough to land in last in the division. While not much went right for the 49ers last year, they did get some great player up front, especially from center Jake Brendel. The former UCLA Bruin, who originally joined the team back in 2020 but opted out to COVID-19, entered his third season as the starting center and had a great year. Advertisement Pro Football Focus gave him a 65.0 overall grade, ranking him 23rd out of 64 qualified centers. He also earned a 71.6 run-blocking grade (13th) and a 55.1 pass-blocking grade (51st). However, when it comes to the grades from 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster, Brendel was the best of the best. 'Fewest amount of missed assignments," Foerster said. "His pass protection was the highest grade, his run blocking grade, pass blocking grade, and his mental errors were the best they've been since he's been here. They've been better than any center that we've had playing here up to this point.' Since Kyle Shanahan took over as the team's head coach, the 49ers have had Brendel, Weston Richburg and Alex Mack as their primary starting centers, and in Foerster's mind, this past season was the best yet. According to SIS Data Hub, Brendel had just six blown blocks, which was the fewest of any 49ers offensive lineman in 2024. Advertisement Foerster took some issue with the center's PFF grade, saying that they're grading without context. "It's interesting how he's rated outside of the 32 centers by whatever the grading system is. But I'm not knocking it, because my point is that everybody looks at something different," Foerster told 49ers writer Jake Hutchinson. "So you can knock what I look at and say, 'Oh, you don't know what you're talking about.' That's fine. I know what we asked him to do on every given play and what his role is, what his job is, so I can grade it." As the 49ers prepare for 2025, Brendel is set to enter his four season as the team's starting center, and if he plays the way he did down the stretch, that should be a strong base for the offense to build on to make it back to the postseason again. 49ers free agent wide receiver announces retirement after 10 seasons
Nearly three months into the new league year, the San Francisco 49ers still have multiple players from their 2024 roster who are still unsigned and looking for their next opportunity in the NFL. However, that group shrank on Saturday when wide receiver Chris Conley announced his retirement from the NFL through his agent, Jonathan Perzley (reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport). Advertisement Conley, 32, played collegiately at Georgia from 2011-14, catching 117 passes for 1,938 yards and 20 touchdowns in 49 career games. The Kansas City Chiefs took him in the third round (No. 76 overall) of the 2015 NFL draft. He spent three seasons in Kansas City, two with the Houston Texans, one with the Tennessee Titans and two in San Francisco. In his 10-year career, Conley caught 226 passes for 2,998 yards and 15 touchdowns. He spent the last two seasons with the 49ers, recording nine receptions for 145 yards in 23 games. According to his agent, Conley is returning to the University of Georgia to pursue a career in filmmaking.
