Google AI search impact on website traffic
:
Google is pushing back against recent reports that its AI-powered search features are hurting website traffic, as per a report. The tech giant published a blog post on Wednesday, which was written by VP and Head of Google Search
Liz Reid
, that said click volume across the platform has remained 'relatively stable' compared with the same time last year, though some types of websites are seeing gains while others are seeing declines.
Is Google's AI Overviews Causing a Drop in Website Traffic?
Reid's comments come just weeks after a
Pew Research report
suggested that users are 'less likely' to click on links when presented with
Google's AI-generated summaries
, known as
AI Overviews
, which appear at the top of search results, as reported by The Verge. Google disputes those findings, arguing that many third-party studies rely on 'flawed methodologies,' according to the report.

News Outlets and Media Feel the Pressure From Google Search Changes
The findings matter because changes to Google Search have already sent ripples through the
digital media industry
, as per the Verge report. A Wall Street Journal report detailed how outlets like Business Insider, The Washington Post, and HuffPost have seen
traffic declines
following the rise of AI features such as
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot,
which has forced some media organisations to reduce staff, as per the report. Independent websites have also struggled to maintain visibility in search results due to Google's algorithms, according to The Verge report.

Traffic Shifts: Who's Gaining and Who's Losing
According to Reid, AI is changing how users search, but not necessarily reducing engagement, reported The Verge. She pointed out that there are 'decreased traffic to some sites and increased traffic to others,' while "websites with forums, videos, podcasts, and authentic voices benefitting the most," as per the report.
As per The Verge report, users are also more likely to visit websites that contain in-depth reviews, original posts, or thoughtful analyses.

Valuable Clicks: Why AI Responses Still Drive Engagement
Reid highlighted that, 'We continue to send billions of clicks to websites every day and believe that Search's value exchange with the web remains strong,' as quoted in The Verge report.
Reid also noted that while some users might not click on citations in AI Overviews, those who do tend to spend more time on the site exploring a topic in depth, according to the report. She explained that, 'An AI response might provide the lay of the land, but people click to dive deeper and learn more, and when they do, these clicks are more valuable,' as quoted by The Verge.
AI Mode Launch: Changing How We Search
The tech giant's comments come as Google rolled out AI Mode to all users in the United States, a feature that functions like a chatbot within search, according to the report. Despite concerns from digital publishers, Google is pressing ahead, testing new AI-curated search results pages that aim to reshape how people discover information online, as per The Verge report.

Trump plans 100% tariff on chips made outside U.S.; OpenAI's GPT-5 nears release; Apple to invest $100 billion in U.S. manufacturing

Trump plans 100% tariff on chips made outside U.S. U.S. President Donald Trump said that he will be imposing 100% tariff on computer chips unless they're manufactured within the U.S. The threat has raised the fears around higher prices of electronics, automobiles, household appliances and other essential electronic items. Trump's warning comes three months after he had said electronics would mostly be exempt from the heavy tariffs imposed by his administration. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a shortage of chips pushed up the price of autos causing increased inflation. Investors have said that the tariff exemptions were a plus for Apple and other major tech companies which have invested massive amounts of money in chip manufacturing outside the U.S. Apple has committed to investing $600 billion in the U.S. with another $100 billion promised in February. Big Tech in total has said they will be investing $1.5 trillion in the U.S. since Trump has come to power. There is a chance that Trump could exempt Apple from the tariffs owing to this. Demand for chips has grown with sales increasing by 19.6% in June, according to data. Trump has been fostering domestic manufacturing often saying that the high costs of chips outside the country could be avoided by opening factories domestically. OpenAI's GPT-5 nears release OpenAI is preparing for the release of their latest flagship AI model, GPT-5, so users can finally see the increments in performance from GPT-4. A couple of people who have tested the model said that the coding capabilities of the model shone as did its ability to solve science and math problems. However, the advances from GPT-4 to GPT-5 were not as huge as the advances from GPT-3 to GPT-4. The recent advancement in AI models was based on scaling up by increasing training data and compute. But OpenAI has struggled with scaling up like issues with running into a data wall. Ilya Sutskever, the former chief scientist at OpenAI had said in a speech earlier that even though power could be expanded, data was becoming limited. Besides this, another problem was that the 'training runs' for large language models are more likely to have failures from hardware malfunctioning so researchers can't determine the final performance of the models until the end which can last for months. OpenAI released ChatGPT around three years ago introducing AI to the mainstream globally. The release led to rivals like Google and Anthropic releasing competitive AI models. OpenAI is also working on solving test-time compute which involves reasoning AI models. But CEO Sam Altman said that GPT-5 will be a mix of both reasoning and their flagship large language models. Apple to invest $100 billion in U.S. manufacturing Apple CEO Tim Cook met Donald Trump yesterday to announce an additional investment of $100 billion across the next four years. Under the announcement, Apple will bring more of their supply chain and advanced manufacturing processes to the U.S. as a part of the American Manufacturing Programme initiative but it still isn't a full commitment to make the iPhone domestically completely. Cook said that this plan will expand work with 10 companies across the U.S. that make parts and semiconductor chips. These partners include Corning, Coherent, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments and Broadcom along with a few others. Apple had earlier this year said that it will invest $500 billion domestically. Trump has been upset with Apple shifting their manufacturing processes to India from China after he placed tariffs. Just recently now, Trump is targetting India due to their purchase of Russian oil and imposed additional tariffs on India. Cook has previously said that a bunch of iPhone components can be made in India like the glass display and module to identify faces.

After laying off 12000, Noel Tata's TCS gives good news to employees, to roll-out salary hikes for 80% of…, effective…

India's largest IT company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has been in the news in recent days. The company recently announced the layoff of 12,000 employees, which made it part of discussions. However, a recent decision by the company can boost employee morale. TCS revealed that it will be increasing the salaries of 80% of its workforce. TCS Salary Hike India's largest IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) informed employees that it will roll-out wage hikes for about 80 per cent of workforce, covering mid to junior levels. The wage hikes will be effective September 1, TCS CHRO Milind Lakkad and CHRO Designate K Sudeep said in an email to employees on Wednesday. 'We are pleased to announce a compensation revision for all eligible associates in grades upto C3A and equivalent, covering 80 per cent of our workforce. This will be effective 1st September 2025,' says the email seen by PTI. The email goes on to say: 'We would like to thank each one of you for your dedication and hard work, as we build the future of TCS together.' The extent of wage hikes could not be immediately ascertained. When reached for comment, the company in a statement said: 'We can confirm that we will be issuing wage hikes to around 80 per cent of our employees effective 1st September 2025.' TCS To Layoff 12000 Employees The move to reward and retain talent comes at a time when TCS has decided to lay off over 12,000 employees as part of what it describes as a broader strategy to become a 'future-ready organisation'. This entails focus on investments in technology, AI deployment, market expansion, and workforce realignment, according to the company. 'TCS is on a journey to become a future-ready organisation. This includes strategic initiatives on multiple fronts, including investing in new-tech areas, entering new markets, deploying AI at scale for our clients and ourselves, deepening our partnerships, creating next-gen infrastructure, and realigning our workforce model,' the company had said last month as the news of layoffs shook the IT industry. 'Towards this, a number of reskilling and redeployment initiatives have been underway. As part of this journey, we will also be releasing associates from the organisation whose deployment may not be feasible. This will impact about 2 per cent of our global workforce, primarily in the middle and the senior grades, over the course of the year,' TCS had then said. The layoffs at TCS have, in fact, ignited larger conversations on whether or not the IT industry itself may be headed for a major reset, amid turbulence from global macro uncertainties, impact of US' crushing tariffs on overall outsourcing sentiments, and the AI-led disruptions. As it is, India's top IT services companies have delivered single-digit revenue growth in Q1 FY26, capping off a somewhat-sobering June quarter as macroeconomic instability and geopolitical tensions have weighed on global tech demand and delayed client decision-making. Youth is losing to experience in America's job market

Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills Every time there's fresh evidence of labor market softness, as with the July jobs report, an obvious question is raised about the health of the US economy. Now, increasingly, economists and employees are asking a second question: Are we seeing the impact of artificial intelligence on knowledge workers? There are plenty of signs that AI is making the job market tougher for young college graduates , but for the 22 million people with jobs that are categorized as professional and business services, wage growth has actually accelerated over the past year to levels solidly above pre-pandemic rates. This suggests that the state of the labor market for white-collar workers is best described as bifurcated — one where there are both winners and losers rather than one where most workers are worse the overall unemployment rate being a solid 4.2%, conditions for young workers are soft. Only 65.3% of 20- to 24-year-olds were employed last month, nearly three percentage points lower than the post-pandemic peak in January 2024, and roughly the same proportion as we saw in December 2008 following Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.'s collapse. For the millions of college graduates in the 22 to 29 age group, the unemployment rate stood at 3.7% in the first six months of the year, compared with 2.8% in 2019, according to Current Population Survey numbers are backed up by numerous news reports as well as comments from corporate executives on how they see AI transforming labor needs. Internship postings this spring were down. A recent Wall Street Journal report noted that the share of entry-level hires relative to all new hires has slumped by 50% since 2019 among the biggest technology companies, while another pointed to consultancy firm McKinsey putting together smaller but more experienced teams as it adds AI to the also becoming more common for CEOs to talk about AI eventually leading to significant layoffs. At Meta Platforms Inc., Alphabet Inc. and Microsoft Corp., employee headcount grew 64% between 2019 and 2022 but just 3% over the past three years. This comes at a time when the three tech juggernauts collectively plan more than $250 billion in capital expenditures over the next 12 months, suggesting that there's a tradeoff between investing in AI and hiring the number of jobs in the professional and business services' category of the non-farm payrolls data shrank slightly over the past year, wage growth accelerated to just above 5% in July. Compare that with 2019, when employment growth averaged 1.3% while wages rose 3.7%.One explanation for this is that there are composition effects at work. If companies aren't hiring young workers, who tend to be lower paid, we're going to get lower employment growth in professional and business services along with increasing average compensation levels, which could overstate the extent to which older, more experienced workers are getting there are reasons to believe some workers really are gaining from this phase of the AI boom. There's the pro athlete-type offers being made to the select few engineers building new AI models. Outside the tech sector, there's the experience of companies such as McKinsey, where 'mediocre expertise' is going away while specialized expertise becomes more valuable in combination with AI agents. That dovetails with Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang's prediction that workers who use AI will be fine in this reasonable for all workers to be uncomfortable with a technological innovation that hasn't disrupted most workers yet but where the ultimate outcome is so uncertain. There's no guarantee that the next generation of AI models won't come after workers with more advanced skills. It's also a far cry from the technology boom of the late 1990s, which was accompanied by broad-based employment, compensation and consumption the AI boom, it feels like the bigger it gets, the more losers there will eventually be, either from workforce disruption or a malinvestment-induced bust. Unless there are signs that it's leading to more winners than losers, this is a boom that understandably generates as much fear as it does optimism.
