Uber Freight CEO Lior Ron Leaves $5.1B Unit For Waabi's AI-First Driverless Trucks: 'Most Positioned To Lead The Transformation'
Uber Freight founder and CEO Lior Ron is leaving the top job to become chief operating officer at self-driving truck startup Waabi, Bloomberg reports. Ron, who built Uber's (NYSE:UBER) freight and logistics unit into a $5.1 billion business, will lead Waabi as it works to launch fully driverless trucks in Texas before the end of this year. According to TechCrunch, Ron's move comes as autonomous freight technology nears commercial viability, and Waabi prepares to scale operations against deep-pocketed rivals like Aurora, which has already launched the first driverless trucking route in the U.S. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) veteran Rebecca Tinucci, who TechCrunch says spent six years building the automaker's charging network, will replace Ron as head of Uber Freight after Tesla cut its charging staff last year. Ron will remain chair of Uber Freight while taking on his new role at Waabi, Bloomberg reports. Ron and Raquel Urtasun Reunite to Drive AI-First Autonomy to Market Waabi founder and CEO Raquel Urtasun told TechCrunch that Ron will lead go-to-market strategy, expand key partnerships, and bring Waabi from its current development stage to "commercialization at scale." She pointed to his track record of scaling Uber Freight from inception to a multibillion-dollar revenue operation as proof that he can guide Waabi through its next phase. Ron and Urtasun share a history in the sector, TechCrunch says. Ron co-founded self-driving truck company Otto, which Uber acquired in 2016, while Urtasun served as Uber's chief scientist for self-driving research between 2017 and 2021. Ron said his decision to join Waabi was driven by timing and the scale of opportunity in autonomy, telling TechCrunch, "If the most impactful thing to do in the next decade is autonomy, and if the timing is right, then for me it's really about joining forces with who I think is most positioned to lead the transformation." Ron described the career shift as "like going back to the roots" in an interview with Bloomberg. Urtasun told TechCrunch the company's "AI-first" approach allows it to develop and validate self-driving systems with fewer resources and in less time than competitors. Central to Waabi's development is Waabi World, a closed-loop simulator that trains and tests its self-driving software by generating real-time scenarios, including accidents and construction zones, without physical risk. According to TechCrunch, earlier this year, Waabi declared its system "feature complete," meaning it had all the necessary capabilities to operate without a human driver and was now focusing on performance improvements and validation ahead of its driverless launch. The company plans to begin operations in Texas, which TechCrunch says has become a hub for autonomous freight testing and deployment, but has not disclosed the specific routes or launch partners. He added that Waabi's trucks will be able to drive directly to customer depots, avoiding the need for costly transfer terminals, and will deliver a "commercial-ready solution" for operators looking to integrate autonomy quickly. With Aurora's public market funding and head start on commercial routes, TechCrunch says that Waabi's leadership is betting that its leaner, AI-driven approach will help it compete and scale faster in the race to lead autonomous freight in the U.S. Read Next: In a $34 Trillion Debt Era, The Right AI Could Be Your Financial Advantage — Image: Shutterstock Up Next: Transform your trading with Benzinga Edge's one-of-a-kind market trade ideas and tools. iPhone 17 Air tipped to make 3 big compromises vs iPhone 17 Pro — here's what you're giving up
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Like Samsung and its Galaxy S25 Edge, Apple will reportedly chase a thinner phone design when it releases the much-rumored iPhone 17 Air later this fall. A likely replacement for the iPhone 16 Plus, the Air could deliver a thinner phone to the iPhone 17 lineup, but not without making a few key compromises. That's what regular leaker Fixed Focus Digital claims in a Weibo post, anyway. The leaker says that the iPhone 17 Air will be very similar to the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro, but with three big sacrifices in the name of a thinner phone. 'It has almost all the configurations of the Pro, but it cuts one core in the GPU part, and the screen and battery are not as good as the Pro,' Fixed Focus Digital wrote in the machine-translated post, adding that they were 'quite optimistic' about the iPhone 17 Air. What this means is that the iPhone 17 Air will still feature an A19 Pro chipset, as we expect to see in the Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, but that it will have five GPU cores instead of the six found in the Pro models' chipset. The Air would still be more powerful than the standard iPhone 17, which is supposed to have a standard A19 processor. Battery & screen sacrifices Fixed Focus doesn't specify, but they also mentioned that the screen and battery are supposed to be steps back from what the iPhone 16 Plus offers.. Current rumors have the iPhone 17 Air featuring a 6.6-inch OLED display, a skosh smaller than the iPhone 16 Plus' 6.7-inch panel. The same leaker previously claimed that the Air would have a 120Hz screen but not a ProMotion display, so it won't have a variable refresh rate. A thinner phone usually means a smaller capacity battery — that's one of the compromises Samsung had to make with the Galaxy S25 Edge. But Apple may go even smaller with the iPhone 17 Air's power pack as reports claim the phone will either feature a 2,800 mAh battery or a 2,900 mAh cell. Either outcome would be smaller than the 3,900 mAh battery in the S25 Edge. The iPhone 16 Pro was able to fit a larger 3,582 mAh battery in the phone. We haven't seen many rumors on battery size for the iPhone 17 Pro, but it could rely on better power efficiency to get more life out of the battery. That's not all Even compared to the standard iPhone 17, the Air model is expected to have a more limited camera setup. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the Air will only feature a single 48MP rear lens, and leaked renders of the iPhone 17 Air seem to bear that rumor out In contrast, the standard iPhone 17 should have the same 48MP primary lens and a 12MP ultrawide as the iPhone 16. Meanwhile, the Pro models could feature an upgraded 48MP telephoto lens in their rear camera array. Add it all up and it feels like the iPhone 17 Air is making a lot of major compromises to reach a very specific aesthetic over actual performance. Even so, Fixed Focus Digital believes the phone will be a hit, so it will be interesting to see how people respond to iPhone 17 Air when it arrives. That could be very soon as the iPhone 17 series is likely to launch in September — just a few weeks from now. This Summer's Next Trend? Stationery, Says Yiwugo
YIWU, China, Aug. 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- the official website of the Yiwu Commodity Market, is the largest commodity wholesale market in the world. Big data from Yiwugo shows that, as of August 12, 2025, demand in the 'office and study supplies' sector had been on a steady rise, climbing to 14th place among all categories. Traditionally a stable segment of the consumer goods market, stationery has seen a notable surge in the past 30 days, driven by the approaching back-to-school season in both China and overseas. Many Yiwugo merchants report a buying wave for office essentials and cartoon-themed stationery. Jiangsu Dehuang Stationery Co., Ltd., with nearly 30 years of experience, boasts industry-leading design, R&D, and manufacturing capabilities. Over the years, it has established itself as a trusted supplier to both domestic and international brands. According to owner Wang Xiaohua, the company collaborates with renowned names such as Germany's Staedtler, Faber-Castell, and Pelikan, along with France's Maped and several leading Chinese brands. Its product line includes correction tools, sticky notes, and art crayons. Since early summer, demand from European customers for art-related products has soared, with average monthly purchases nearing RMB 1 million. The French market, in particular, has experienced a notable upswing, fueled by a wave of new customers introduced through Yiwugo. Major general merchandise chains in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. have expressed strong satisfaction with Dehuang's sticky notes, citing their exceptional paper durability, absence of fluorescent agent reactions, and outstanding adhesive stability—qualities that have translated into substantial annual orders. Wang noted that Dehuang's commitment to quality begins with the careful selection of premium raw materials and extends to the acquisition of both domestic and international certifications. Each year, the company undergoes rigorous brand-partner audits on plant design, technology, and supply capabilities. For instance, the production of correction fluid requires not only eco-friendly materials but also exceptional sealing performance. Factoring in production and transportation cycles, manufacturing a single bottle of Dehuang correction fluid costs about 1.5 times more than typical market alternatives—yet its shelf life is five to six times longer. This is a key reason for the company's consistently high customer retention rate. Unlike Dehuang, which has spent three decades building its reputation on quality, Yuanchang Stationery has distinguished itself through its distinctive design. According to proprietor Wu Chenjie, many customers have been sourcing office supplies via Yiwugo recently, with cartoon-themed staplers emerging as bestsellers. Models shaped like pandas, airplanes, and propellers have seen particularly strong demand. One European client, who initially ordered only a few hundred units of each model, quickly multiplied their orders severalfold after successful trial runs—yet demand still outpaced supply. Today, whenever Yuanchang introduces a new product, this client immediately places large orders; just this month, they purchased another shipment of cartoon staplers. As Wu pointed out, since 2023 Yuanchang has partnered with multiple design agencies to blend charm with functionality. The first major success from these collaborations—the panda stapler series—has become an overseas bestseller, now shipping more than 50,000 units each month. In recent months, Disney-themed stationery sets have been especially popular in Southeast Asia. After securing Disney licensing, Yuanchang has curated stationery collections tailored to different markets, with monthly orders reaching around 500,000 units. Currently, Yuanchang is busy fulfilling orders from a German retail chain. Through Yiwugo, the company has connected with a growing network of high-quality customers. Wu explained that their R&D team draws on both domestic and international feedback collected via the platform to refine their products, enhancing not only quality but also their playful appeal. Thanks to Yiwugo's outreach and promotion, an increasing number of premium Chinese brands—such as Dehuang—are gaining wider recognition in global markets, enabling outstanding domestic products to shine both at home and abroad.
