‘There's Still A Lot of Pain': Ruby Franke's Husband Speaks Out for the First Time
Kevin Franke, the soon-to-be ex-husband of mommy vlogger Ruby Franke, is speaking out for the first time since Ruby was arrested and pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree felony child abuse. The comments come ahead of the release of a new Hulu documentary Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke.
'Life right now for me is getting back into, I would say, a comfortable normal,' Kevin told People in a new interview. 'It's just establishing a new normal. [It is] more normal than it's been in years. But there's a long way to go.'

It's been almost two years since Ruby and Jodi Hildebrandt, the family's therapist and Ruby's close friend and mentor, were arrested on charges of felony child abuse. The creator of YouTube channel 8 Passengers, Ruby was known online for her Mormon faith and strict parenting style — which included taking the doors off her children's rooms when they misbehaved and often withholding meals. But in August 2023, she and her podcast co-host Jodi were arrested by Utah police after Ruby and Kevin's then-12-year-old son escaped Hildebrandt's house with injuries and ran to neighbors to ask them for help. After their arrest, Ruby agreed to a plea deal in December 2023, which detailed the systematic abuse of two of the children. Ruby confessed to cutting off her son's oxygen, tying his wrists and ankles, withholding food, and forcing both her son and daughter to do physical labor as punishment— all in the hopes of driving out evil from them. During her sentencing, Ruby said that Hildebrandt's therapy teachings and beliefs brainwashed her into a 'dark delusion.' Hildebrandt also pleaded guilty to four counts of child abuse. The shocking allegations and admissions left the family vlogging community — and Kevin — reeling from the ordeal.
'There's still a lot of pain,' Kevin said. 'There's still a lot of healing that I work on each day, but it just looks and feels different now.'
Kevin and Ruby were married when she began listening to Hildebrandt's advice — and he tells People that, at one point, Hildebrandt instructed Jodi to ban him and their older son Chad from the house entirely. Kevin said he followed the rules of the separation because he wanted his family back but noted that Hildebrandt's instructions concerned him.
'We were both really indoctrinated that we needed complete isolation in order to heal. And that if we were interacting with anybody that was contrary to the messaging that Jodi…and Ruby wanted us to accept and ingest, then we were being selfish, and we were breaking the boundaries and the rules of the separation,' he said. 'I really believe that [Ruby] was damaged severely by swallowing the teachings that Jodi just was serving up for her.'
Franke's arrest and subsequent revelations of abuse have been headline fodder since the mommy vlogger's arrest in 2023. Her daughter, Shari Franke, released a memoir in January called The House of My Mother: A Daughter's Shocking Quest for Freedom. She told Rolling Stone around its release that the book was her way to discuss her mother once and then close a chapter on that traumatic part of her life. 'Writing the book was a way to take back my privacy, as strange as that sounds,' she said at the time. 'The reason that I wrote this book is, 'Hey, everyone, here's how I feel. Please don't speculate and leave the rest alone.'' Kevin, Shari, and Chad are all interviewed in the documentary Devil in the Family.
'Ever since the arrest of Ruby. I have been working tirelessly to help my children, my family, and myself heal,' Kevin told Rolling Stone in a statement in January 2025.

Molly Gordon Reacts to Her Viral Kissing Pics with 'The Bear' Costar Jeremy Allen White, Says We're a 'Judgmental Society'
Molly Gordon reacted to the viral photos of her kissing her The Bear co-star Jeremy Allen White last September in a new interview with Vanity Fair The actors play love interests Claire Dunlap and Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto, respectively, on the series Gordon said it's been "at times annoying, fascinating and interesting — just to be a part of something that people have opinions on" regarding the onscreen romanceMolly Gordon is sharing her reaction to those viral photos of her kissing her The Bear co-star, Jeremy Allen White. The Booksmart and Theater Camp actress, 29, avoided addressing the liplocked snaps directly when asked about them by Vanity Fair, only saying, "With the internet, I just think — I even see it in myself as a fan of things — we're just a more judgmental society." Gordon joined season 2 of The Bear as Claire Dunlap, the childhood sweetheart of White's Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto. The two pursue a relationship after a chance meet-cute in the grocery store, but are currently not together in the series. However, last September, the co-stars were photographed kissing in Los Angeles, arms wrapped around each other as the embraced and shared a kiss. A month later, Gordon and White, 34, were spotted stepping out for dinner in New York City's West Village. After the PDA photos, a source told PEOPLE there were on-set rumors that the co-stars "had intense chemistry even when not filming" but that they had only recently started "exploring their chemistry" in real life. The source added that White "really seems into" Gordon. Elsewhere in her Vanity Fair interview, Gordon opened up about how she was cast on The Bear. Having previously met creator Christopher Storer, she said she signed up for the restaurant drama only knowing she'd be playing a doctor — not that she'd be Carmy's love interest, whom he affectionately calls "Claire Bear." "I'm always 'the friend,' " she said. "I've never played the romantic person. I was like, 'Whoa, this is going to be a different experience.' " Gordon said White's protagonist "is a character that people feel so protective over, and it's been kind of controversial to bring a romantic element into the show." "That's been at times annoying, fascinating and interesting — just to be a part of something that people have opinions on," she added. San Antonio Police Walk Back 'Premature' Insistence That Jonathan Joss' Killing Was Not A Hate Crime, Say Investigation Is Ongoing
The San Antonio Police Department has walked back its insistence that there was 'no evidence' to suggest King of the Hill actor Jonathan Joss' killing was motivated by homophobia. Police Chief Bill McManus said Thursday that it had been 'way, way, way premature' for the department to issue a statement earlier this week dispelling the idea that the murder was a hate crime, after Joss' husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales detailed the events that preceded the shooting, saying it was the result of repeated and 'openly homophobic' harassment. More from Deadline 'King Of The Hill' Actor Jonathan Joss' Husband Says Fatal Shooting Came After "Openly Homophobic" Harassment & Home Arson 'King Of The Hill' Casts Toby Huss As Voice Of Dale Gribble 'King Of The Hill' Revival Gets Hulu Premiere Date; First Look 'We understand that many in the LGBTQ+ community are feeling anxious and concerned. A lot of it has to do with that premature statement that we released, and again, I own that. We shouldn't have done it,' McManus said during a press conference Thursday. 'The loss of Jonathan Joss was tragic and most heavily felt by the LGBTQ+ community.' Joss was shot and killed Sunday near his San Antonio home. A suspect, Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, 56, was located and eventually booked for murder, according to the police. McManus said the investigation is ongoing, and the department is taking the hate crime allegations seriously. In Texas, defendants are not charged separately for a hate crime. Instead, prosecutors can seek penalty enhancements if evidence can prove the defendant's actions were motivated by bias or prejudice against a protected class. 'Our homicide detectives are continuing to pursue every lead in this case to ensure that we understand the full picture of what led up to the senseless murder of Mr. Joss,' McManus continued. 'We're committed to delivering a thorough and complete investigation to file with the District Attorney's office for prosecution.' The San Antonio Police Department is also working with the fire department to better understand the active investigation surrounding the fire at Joss' home in January, McManus said. In his statement earlier this week, Kern de Gonzales wrote that their home 'was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire.' 'We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done,' the statement read. So far, police have not responded to that allegation, though McManus did also say Thursday that the department is investigating around 70 calls made to law enforcement over the last two years 'involving various neighborhood-type disturbances' between Joss and his neighbors. Joss, a native of San Antonio, had worked steadily as an actor since the mid-1990s, first appearing in the Luke Perry rodeo movie 8 Seconds. He worked in several TV movies and had an six-episode arc in the series Walker, Texas Ranger. His later TV credits includes Friday Night Lights, The League, Ray Donovan, In Plain Sight and Parks & Recreation. He appeared in 34 episodes of King of the Hill, according to IMDb, and also voiced the John Redcorn character in the King of the Hill video game. It was one of several video game credits that also included voice work in Red Dead Redemption, The Walking Dead: Michonne, Days Gone, Cyberpunk 2077 and Wasteland 3. The 58-year-old Oscar winner's boyfriend of five years, Van Hunt, revealed to that he has already popped the question. "I put out the proposal, and it's still on hold as you can see," he told the website after having his first joint interview with Berry on the June 4 episode of Today with Jenna & Friends. "It's just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her." As for why Berry hasn't said yes yet, she noted both of their past marriages have influenced her. 'Well, I've been married three times. Van has been married once, and so no, we don't feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way. We don't,' Berry said. Berry was previously married to Olivier Martinez before the two split in 2015. Prior to her relationship with Martinez, 57, she was married to former MLB player David Justice and singer/actor Eric Benét. However, despite her current hesitation, Berry does plan to one day tie the knot with Hunt. "I think we will get married just because, out of the people I've been married to, this is the person I should have married," Berry noted. 'And I feel like I should, we should get married, but it's not because we feel like we have to. I think it's something that we would like to do just because we want that expression." As for when that would be, she simply replied "soon." The actress-filmmaker first met the Grammy winner through his brother. "Van's brother, who I had known for many years, came to me and said, 'You should meet my brother.' 'she said. Of navigating their relationship, Berry said that it 'took me a minute to get it right,' but 'the nature of the way this happened, I have a real belief that this is it. This is my person.' Berry told Women's Health in November 2021 that she feels "fulfilled" in her life with Hunt. "I wish I had met him sooner so I could have loved him longer. I just feel fulfilled. I feel happy in my life romantically, as a mother, as an artist," the Oscar winner said at the time.
