Tariff deal shows Malaysia is a trusted partner, says Tengku Zafrul

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States' decision to reduce its tariff on Malaysian exports to 19 per cent is a strong signal of confidence in Malaysia's credibility and economic stewardship, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
"This decision by the US reflects the strong and enduring economic ties between our two nations," he said in a statement today. "It is also a testament to Malaysia's credibility as a reliable trade and investment partner."
Tengku Zafrul said the tariff outcome followed Malaysia's consistent and methodical negotiating approach, which safeguarded the country's right to pursue domestic policies while securing a tariff rate that is in line with regional benchmarks.
The 19 per cent tariff, down from the previously imposed 25 per cent, will come into effect on Aug 7, after bilateral negotiations concluded on July 31.
Talks between both governments began on May 6, and involved multiple platforms of engagement, according to the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI).
MITI said Malaysia stood firm on several "red line" issues to ensure the agreement did not compromise its socio-economic development agenda.
The ministry also expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister's Office, and key ministries and agencies for their roles in the negotiation process.
Other parties involved included the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, the US-Asean Business Council, think tanks and industry representatives.
The US is Malaysia's largest export market, with trade valued at RM198.65 billion and its largest source of foreign direct investment, with RM32.82 billion in approved investments recorded in 2024.

Trump demands resignation of Malaysian-born Intel CEO over China ties

Trump demands resignation of Malaysian-born Intel CEO over China ties WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump demanded today that the new boss of US chip maker Intel resign 'immediately', after a Republican senator raised national security concerns over his links to firms in China. 'The CEO of INTEL is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem,' Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, a day after senator Tom Cotton said he had written to Intel questioning ties between CEO Lip-Bu Tan (pic) and Chinese firms. Advertisement Tan 'reportedly controls dozens of Chinese companies and has a stake in hundreds of Chinese advanced-manufacturing and chip firms. At least eight of these companies reportedly have ties to the Chinese People's Liberation Army', Cotton wrote in his letter, a copy of which he posted on his website. Cotton also noted Tan's role as the previous head of Cadence Design Systems, which he said recently 'pleaded guilty to illegally selling its products to a Chinese military university and transferring its technology to an associated Chinese semiconductor company without obtaining licenses.' SPONSORED CONTENT Tan was head of the company at that time, Cotton said. The Malaysian-born tech industry veteran took the helm at struggling Intel in March, announcing layoffs as White House tariffs and export restrictions muddied the market. Advertisement He has said it 'won't be easy' to overcome challenges faced by the company. Intel is one of Silicon Valley's most iconic companies, but its fortunes have been dwarfed by Asian powerhouses TSMC and Samsung, which dominate the made-to-order semiconductor business. Advertisement The company was also caught by surprise with the emergence of Nvidia as the world's preeminent AI chip provider. Intel's niche has been in chips used in traditional computing processes, steadily being eclipsed by the AI revolution. - AFP

Trump nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by Cambodian PM

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia's prime minister said he nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize on Thursday, crediting the US president with "visionary and innovative diplomacy" that ended border clashes with Thailand. Five days of hostilities between Cambodia and Thailand killed at least 43 people last month as a territorial dispute boiled over into cross-border combat. A truce began last week after phone calls from Trump, as well as mediation from Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim – chair of the Asean regional bloc – and a delegation of Chinese negotiators. A letter from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet addressed to the Norwegian Nobel Committee said he wished to nominate Trump "in recognition of his historic contributions in advancing world peace." "President Trump's extraordinary statesmanship – marked by his commitment to resolving conflicts and preventing catastrophic wars through visionary and innovative diplomacy – was most recently demonstrated by his decisive role in brokering an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand," the letter said. "This timely intervention, which averted a potentially devastating conflict, was vital in preventing great loss of lives and paved the pay towards the restoration of peace." The Norwegian Nobel Committee does not publish the list of nominees for the prize. However, a list of candidates is set by Jan 31 and the announcement is generally made the following October. Tens of thousands of people can offer a nomination to the Nobel committee, including lawmakers, ministers, certain university professors, former laureates and members of the committee themselves. Mentioning the prestigious award has become a sign of diplomatic goodwill for some foreign leaders towards Trump, who has touted his deal-making credentials as a broker of global peace. Trump has already been nominated for the prize by Pakistan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Cambodia and Thailand were both facing eye-watering US tariffs on their exports when Trump intervened in the conflict, the deadliest to consume their border region in more than a decade. They secured reduced levies of 19 per cent last week, avoiding the high 36 per cent rate he had threatened both with. - AFP
