Leading with versatility

Turbulence. Volatile. Uncertainty. Unrest. Upheaval. Up and down. Disruptive. These are the times that were the exception to the rule. These were the times that were supposed to be part of the contingency plans. These are norms today. The world has become fragmented and unsure. Economies are under duress.
Businesses are in a spin. And it is not just a phase. This has made the text book rules look archaic. These have made business laws irrelevant. In this world of shifting sands; how to be steady, how to be stable and how to be sustainable is a tough ask. Leaders are being questioned.
Despite all, leadership is still the key. There is no set of answers that can settle this debate. There are no new rules that can anchor the leader 'ship'. Having said that, the rise of a new type of leader is mostly with the fall of the stable type of environments.
The old fables of the rise of leaders from ashes are dramatic but symbolically true. From Henry Ford who said that 'Any customer can have a car painted any colour as long as it is black' to Jack Welch who said, 'Change before you have to'; there have been rules that have worked.
Leadership theories have evolved over time. The Great Man Theory gave way to the leadership trait theories. Then came the McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Theory. They all have made contribution to understanding what works and what does not work.
Many critics feel that in today's world we need a different approach.
Many argue that what has happened and is happening today all across the world is unprecedented. Others feel that the gap between theory and practice is widening. All these thoughts have validity. Thus, there's the need to explore more and discover more. COVID was not just a health pandemic, it was a human revelation.
An exposé of what an illusion prosperity is. A reminder of how shallow the leadership reserves of the world are. A reminder of how deceptive the pretence of stability is.
Ripped off the mask of development, the post-COVID world has been even more stormy. COVID was a human tragedy and was supposed to make the world leadership reflect and focus on the healing process. To the shock of all, the world has gone into more geopolitical strife.
Europe is facing the never ending Russia-Ukraine war and the Middle East is facing the horrors of Israel war on Palestine. That is why the word 'VUCA' has emerged to describe the complexity businesses are facing. VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.
The combination of these four words means that the human brain is being subject the very feelings it abhors, i.e., fear of the unknown and lack of clarity- classic causes of stress and breakdown. In these times, a readiness and preparedness approach would require leaders to have agility and versatility. As one size does not fit all, one style does not fit all. Let us look at the various styles that the leader needs to learn and practice in these disruptive times:
Leading from the front— The most repeated and revered style mantra is that leaders lead from the front. The image is of the one man leaping ahead, setting the direction and making it easier for people to follow. That is true. It is especially true when the business is in early days. It is also needed when business is old but goes through extreme uncertainty and disruption. With things being hazy the vision of the top man provides the light in the tunnel. That is why names like Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are synonymous with leading to the next frontier in IT. COVID was a big test of VUCA and many companies and countries failed in it. Surprisingly, Pakistan fared much better than the US, Europe and India. The reason was that it led from the front with refusing to follow the complete lockdown strategy of the world and chose to practice the smart lockdown strategy. In the beginning everybody criticized it, but later case studies by the WHO were written on it to appreciate this leading from the front and not blindly following other country strategies. However, every situation is not dire, and every team is not paralysed. When a leader is used to marching in front, he or she is likely to miss out on the team potential. Most startups are the brainchild of the whizz kids who take the industry by storm with leading ahead of their competition. Many a time we have seen with startups that they come in grow quickly only to slow and stall. The ability to manage and sustain growth needs a different approach that many leaders could not adopt.
Leading from the side— The wise leader also needs to know when to step aside. Leadership is not just the Pied Piper way. Sometimes you have to let people join the leading march. This is not easy for the leaders who enjoy the spot-light on themselves when they are the ones leading from the front. This is a different approach. This involves letting others shine. In times when either you need to grow quickly or change substantially it is best to involve and engage people in the process. Make people change champions. Let them come up with ideas. Pick up the good ideas. Let them implement them. This will create ownership and excitement. Then celebrate their success together. Be there to hand hold the slow ones. Do not abdicate. Take ownership of any risks. This of course requires a team maturity that has a mix of initiators and laggards.
Leading from the behind— This is another approach that is needed when the talent pool of the leadership team is strong. In such teams if the leader keeps on leading from the front, the talent will find growth elsewhere. The focus has to be on developing other leaders. In family-owned businesses in Pakistan the major reason of growth not sustaining is that the family members stifle the talent of people in the lead. Wherever the family has stepped back and given the driving seat to the leadership team results have transformed.
More than style, leadership is about principles. If the leaders have integrity and wisdom, they will have a versatility of approach that adapts to the maturity of its team and the requirement of the situation. When you sow the seeds of integrity and capability you harvest the fruits of versatility.

Gallup poll: surge in business confidence

EDITORIAL: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed satisfaction at the Gallup poll survey's conclusion that business confidence is at a four-year high — a surge directly attributable to his administration's handling of the economy. This is no mean achievement especially considering that the incumbent economic team leaders, like their predecessors, have repeatedly noted that private sector is the engine of growth. The score was marginally negative in the second quarter of 2025 but marked the highest level of confidence since the fourth quarter of 2021 which the Survey noted, 'suggests a moderate easing of political and economic uncertainty from the perspective of the business community.' In this context, it is relevant to point out that perhaps the comparison is unfair given that in 2021 the country (as well as the global economy) was in the midst of a recurring Covid-19 onset with severe implications on economic activity. However, it is noteworthy that the Monetary Policy Statements for the past year projected an uptick in output with the 31 July 2025 Statement reiterating this claim: 'high-frequency economic indicators are depicting a gradual economic recovery. This is reflected in notable y/y growth in automobile sales, fertilizer offtake, credit to private sector, imports of intermediate goods and machinery, and purchasing manager's index in recent months. This improvement in high frequency indicators has now also started to reflect in LSM data, which showed y/y increase in both April and May after five months of contraction.' And yet the Finance Division's July Economic Update and Outlook, a monthly exercise, shows Large-Scale Manufacturing (LSM) July-May 2025 growth rate at negative 1.21 percent against 0.86 percent in the comparable period the year before — data that unambiguously challenges the claim of a four-year high. As noted in the MPS for end July the rise in sales in a number of products was, as per independent economists, rooted in higher sales and a consequent reduction in inventories rather than an uptick in output. Be that as it may, it is relevant to note the five major findings noted by the Gallup poll: (i) forward looking confidence of the business community has plateaued and long standing challenges including inflation, energy reliability and governance remain central to the country's business climate; (ii) 55 percent of businesses in the second quarter of 2024 (October to December 2024) found themselves worse off relative to the first quarter of 2024 (July-September 2024) — an observation that is baffling given that the survey was conducted 23 July to 27 July 2024 or well before the start of the second quarter of 2025 and does not include the May and April LSM data that the MPS stated as indicative of an upward trend; (iii) around one in five businesses (22 percent) reported having to pay a bribe in the past six months which is a decline of 4 percent in the first quarter of 2025. And concerning is the fact that more manufacturers reported having paid a bribe (25 percent) compared to service providers (20 percent); (iv) 43 percent of businesses surveyed claimed that their workforce had decreased in the second quarter of 2025, a 9 percent further reduction from the first quarter data — a concerning statistic for the government; and (v) around 85 percent did not consider last year's budget as a good budget while reports backed by anecdotal surveys indicate that the numbers who do not consider 2025 budget a good one has probably risen given that the incentives — monetary, fiscal and utility tariffs — have been withdrawn as per the conditions agreed with the International Monetary Fund which is generating considerable criticism within the business community. To conclude, granted that surveys have an experimenter bias and the questions simply support that bias yet the economy is clearly not out of the woods yet and the private sector continues to struggle with the IMF insisting on full-cost recovery of state utility companies, ending all incentives, including setting up economic zones, and implementing severely contractionary fiscal and monetary policies that are anti-growth. Disney settles 'Star Wars' actor lawsuit

Photo: file A "Star Wars" actor who sued Disney for firing her over inflammatory social media posts about the Holocaust, the pandemic and trans rights has reached a settlement with the Hollywood studio, the entertainment giant announced on Thursday. Gina Carano, a prominent Donald Trump supporter who had a major role in the hit Disney+ series "The Mandalorian" until 2021, claimed wrongful termination in a lawsuit filed last year with the backing of billionaire Elon Musk. On Thursday, a spokesperson for Disney subsidiary Lucasfilm said the companies had "reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit." Disney "look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future," said a statement. Carano, an outspoken former martial arts fighter-turned-actor, was fired by Disney in 2021 for what the company at the time dubbed "abhorrent and unacceptable" social media posts "denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities." One post shared by Carano appeared to compare being a conservative in the United States to being Jewish in Nazi Germany. Another post appeared to mock a person for wearing multiple masks during the Covid-19 pandemic in California. Carano had earlier enraged members of the trans-community for writing on her Twitter profile that her preferred pronouns were "boop/bop/beep." In her initial lawsuit, Carano said Disney had damaged her reputation and ability to find work in the future, after she had expressed personal political views that led to her being hounded by an "extreme progressive" online mob. The California lawsuit was funded by Musk's X, after Carano publicly replied to an open offer from the tech billionaire to help anyone fired after using his social media platform to exercise free speech. Carano previously claimed she lost a role on a planned "Mandalorian" spin-off called "Rangers of the New Republic" that would have been worth "$150,000 to $250,000 per episode." The Lucasfilm statement said Carano "was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect." Carano also supported Donald Trump's recent election campaign, speaking at a campaign rally in Las Vegas last year. Neither Disney nor Carano disclosed the terms of the agreement, but she appeared to allude to the lawsuit's settlement on her social media. "...and the truth shall set you free," Carano posted Thursday on X.
