Kenya Airways eyes more Doha flights in deal with Qatar Airways

Zawya03-07-2025
National carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) has inked a code-sharing pact with Qatar Airways, allowing the latter to introduce a third daily frequency between Doha and Nairobi while KQ will launch Qatar Airways-marketed flights between Mombasa and Doha during the coming winter season.
The agreement makes Qatar Airways the 15th codeshare partner of the local carrier in a growing list that has seen KQ widen its global route network.
Code-sharing refers to a deal between two or more airlines to sell seats for the same flight, meaning passengers enjoy benefits such as purchase of a single ticket, a single check-in, and seamless connections at transit points.
In the partnership signed in Doha on Tuesday, the two firms said the agreed flights will be available for booking in coming days.
The pair will also extensively codeshare on both networks to offer connections from around the world.'This partnership perfectly aligns with our airline's robust turnaround strategy, which saw Kenya Airways' return to profit for the first time in more than a decade earlier this year,' said KQ managing director Allan Kilavuka in a statement.'The collaboration will also help expedite Kenya Airways' efforts to boost tourism and air cargo activities, turning these and others into pivotal economic growth propellers for Kenya and the East Africa region.'The two companies said they will also look to develop collaboration in other parts of the business.
Kenya Airways has been expanding its network and reach through various code-sharing agreements with various global and local airlines, a move that it bets on to help in maintaining its newly-found profitability path.
In total, KQ now has 15 codeshare partners, among them British Airways, Air Egypt, Air Austral, Safarilink and ITA Airways. Others are Oman Air, Saudia, Precision Air, Air France, KLM and Jambojet.
KQ posted a net profit of Ksh5.4 billion ($42 million) for 2024, marking a turnaround from a Ksh22.6 billion ($175 million) loss in 2023, and booking its first full-year profit in 12 years.

TIME Hotels reports 6.3% summer occupancy growth

TIME Hotels, the UAE-born hospitality brand, has announced positive summer 2025 results, recording significant year-on-year growth in occupancy, average daily rates (ADR), and revenue per available room (RevPar). This underscores the company's strategic focus on high-growth markets and highlights the region's increasing appeal as a year-round tourism destination, the group said. During June this year, TIME Hotels saw a notable 6.3% rise in occupancy compared to the previous year, indicating increased demand during the quieter summer months. Year-to-date, the group has achieved an overall 16.6% growth in occupancy compared to the same period in 2024, demonstrating the company's ability to sustain volume during off-peak travel periods. Furthermore, the company has achieved double-digit growth in ADR and RevPar figures, supported by a pricing strategy implemented to boost volume and value. Mohamed Awadalla, CEO of TIME Hotels, said: "Our performance this summer demonstrates our strategic focus on flexibility and guest-oriented offerings. By recognising new guest segments and proactively responding with customised products and experiences, we continue to strengthen our competitive edge. 'Moving forward, we remain committed to solidifying our position as the preferred hotel operator among travellers, as well as supporting the Middle East's reputation as an appealing, year-round travel destination." Analysis of guest booking patterns across TIME Hotels' portfolio has identified two key travel segments driving growth. Summer 2025 has experienced significant increases in bookings from families, especially those from GCC countries and other regional markets, who are increasingly favouring long-stay packages, interconnected rooms, and bundled offers that include activities for children, dining incentives, and shopping discounts. The company also reported increased interest from younger travellers, including Gen Z and Millennials. These guests are typically prioritising shorter, experience-rich city breaks, digital booking convenience, and immersive local activities. The brand's properties in urban centres such as Dubai and Sharjah have particularly resonated with this demographic, capitalising on a strong social media presence and innovative, contactless hospitality solutions. The sustained growth of TIME Hotels aligns with broader regional trends, positioning the Middle East as a year-round destination. Enhanced indoor attractions, comprehensive event calendars, favourable summer hotel rates, and proactive government-driven tourism campaigns have collectively increased the region's appeal. Further highlighting the region's appeal as a tourism destination throughout the year, the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) recently announced that the emirate welcomed 9.88 million international overnight visitors between January and June 2025, a 6 per cent increase from the same period in 2024. 'At TIME Hotels, we will continue to capitalise on the numerous factors attracting visitors to this region through strategic marketing initiatives and customised guest experiences that directly respond to changing traveller preferences,' said Awadalla. 'With our robust summer performance serving as a solid foundation, we are in a strong position to maintain this growth trajectory,' he concluded. TIME Hotels currently operates 17 hotels throughout the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, with over 3,000 keys, and has 12 properties and 5,000 keys in the pipeline, including properties across Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Morocco, and the Indian Ocean. The expansion into these countries is supported by the strategic rollout of the group's expanding portfolio of brands. These include VIVI by TIME, a bold lifestyle brand; HALO by TIME, a premium upscale offering; and Rotella, TIME Hotels' luxury concept designed to provide exclusivity, sophistication, and culturally enriched hospitality. The company is also repositioning its residential offerings across three distinct tiers, TIME Residences Classic, Executive, and Premium, to serve both long- and short-stay guests. Qatar: QFC records 64% year-on-year growth in H1 2025 registration

Doha, Qatar: Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) recorded a remarkable 64% increase in firm registrations in the first half (H1) of 2025 compared to the same period of 2024. This growth reflects increased investor confidence in the Qatari market and reaffirms QFC's position as a trusted platform for doing business in the region. With 828 new firms registered, QFC has almost surpassed its 2024 record, bringing the total number of registered firms to 3,300 by June 2025. Notably, QFC's regulated firms delivered strong performance, with Corporate & Investment Banks driving a 19% year-on-year increase in Assets Under Management (AUM). QFC's H1 performance was supported by strategic reforms to facilitate market entry, targeted business development and stakeholder engagement efforts. Measures such as simplifying the incorporation process, allowing applicants to instantly establish a legal entity and obtain a license for non-regulated activities, and reducing the application fee for licensing a business by 90% have significantly lowered entry barriers, encouraging more entrepreneurs to launch their businesses through the QFC platform. During the first half of the year, QFC hosted and participated in over 15 events. Notable hosted and co-hosted events include the 3rd Annual Qatar Financial Market Forum powered by Bloomberg Intelligence, the Qatar Family Office Showcase, the QFC & Morgan Stanley Economic Workshop, the Digital Assets Policy Roundtable held on the sidelines of the Qatar Economic Forum, and the Qatar Islamic Finance Forum. QFC also participated in major international events such as the Qatar Web Summit, and the World Economic Forum in Davos. These platforms were used to promote QFC's value proposition and highlight Qatar's competitive business environment to investors and relevant stakeholders. QFC's presence at the 2025 Web Summit was particularly impactful. Between February and June 2025, 566 firms registered with the QFC through the Web Summit, a sharp rise from the 358 firms recorded during the previous edition. QFC also expanded its network through strategic partnerships aimed at advancing its focus sectors, supporting economic development, facilitating cross-border investment, and enhancing its value proposition. Memoranda of Understanding were signed with Qatar National Bank (QNB), German Mittelstand GCC, Gulf Capital Market Association (GCMA), Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), Rwanda Development Board (RDB), Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Financial Services Development Council (FSDC), and Ashmore Group. In addition, QFC signed a Head of Terms with Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited (HSIL) and a service agreement with The View Hospital. Further progress was made under the Innovation Dome, QFC's flagship initiative. During H1, 33 firms joined the Digital Assets Lab, which is spearheading collaborative projects in areas including Islamic finance, tokenized deposits, real estate tokenization, and blockchain-based rewards systems. In addition, the QFC Metaverse was launched, an immersive digital platform designed to facilitate business engagement, collaboration, and innovation. It serves as a central hub for networking, showcasing new technologies, and hosting workshops, training sessions, and expert-led discussions. Commenting on QFC's compounding growth, Chief Executive Officer of QFC, Yousuf Mohamed Al Jaida stated: “We are pleased to see positive results from our ongoing efforts to enhance Qatar's business ecosystem and drive progress across sectors. Our focus remains on fostering an environment that attracts diverse businesses and supports sustainable growth. With this growth momentum, we continue to reinforce Qatar’s position as a leading hub for innovation and investment in the region.â€‌ The Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) provides an excellent platform for firms to do business in Qatar and the region. The QFC offers its own legal, regulatory, tax and business environment, which allows up to 100% foreign ownership, 100% repatriation of profits, and charges a competitive rate of 10% corporate tax on locally sourced profits. © Dar Al Sharq Press, Printing and Distribution. Uganda negotiates debt financing for 85% of planned $3bln railway project

Uganda is in talks with development finance institutions and credit export agencies to have 85% of a planned railway project financed with debt, a senior official said on Wednesday, amid concerns over an already-high public debt pile. Turkey's Yapi Merkezi won the contract to build the 2.7 billion euros ($3.15 billion) railway in October last year and preliminary works have begun. Some of the potential financiers include the OPEC Fund for International Development, Africa Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank and some European export credit agencies, Perez Wamburu, head of the railway construction project, told Reuters. Wamburu said the debt financing talks were in advanced stages and expected to be completed soon. "The possible financiers are available ... the Finance Ministry is actively engaged with them and financial closure should be soon," he said. The Ugandan government will finance 15% and has released $75 million to fund the preliminary work, Wamburu said. The 272-kilometre (169-mile) line is the first section of a planned 1,700 km electric rail line in the landlocked east African country. It will run from Uganda's capital Kampala and connect with neighbouring Kenya's railway at the Malaba border point.
