DMK-led alliance has lost public support, says Nainar Nagendran
Mr. Nagendran told journalists that law and order situation in the State had broken down and murders were reported frequently across districts. This was because of the growing prevalence of narcotics, including cannabis, that had spread to rural areas too, he alleged.
Mr. Nagendran said property tax and electricity tariffs had seen significant rise. The DMK, before coming to power, had promised ₹1,000 per month for all women. 'They did not fulfil it earlier. But with elections approaching, they will give it now,' he claimed.
Welfare programme events had become platforms for visible discord among the ruling party MPs and MLAs. 'There is no unity — not only within the DMK but also within its alliance. The government is functioning inconsistently and is focused solely on retaining power,' he said.
Teacher vacancies remained unfilled despite the promises made in the DMK's election manifesto and temporary posts were not regularised. On seat-sharing with the AIADMK, he said the BJP's primary objective was to unseat the DMK government, and the number of seats would be announced ahead of the elections.
Regarding former AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam's allegation that he failed to respond to calls and letters seeking support to meet the Prime Minister, Mr. Nagendran said he was unaware of any such communication and had not received any letter.

Malik (79) died on Tuesday at a hospital in New Delhi after a prolonged illness, his personal staff said. He was 79. Malik, who had also held the positions of governor of Goa, Bihar, Meghalaya, and Odisha, besides being a member of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in his long political career, died at 1.12 pm at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi. He was in the ICU of the hospital for a long time, getting treatment for various ailments, the staff said. In his gubernatorial role in Jammu and Kashmir, Malik oversaw the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories on August 5, 2019. Coincidentally, he took his last breath on the sixth anniversary of the Centre's move. Malik attracted a lot of controversy after alleging that he was offered a bribe to clear files of two major projects in Jammu and Kashmir and questioned the BJP-led central government over issues related to farmers and the Pulwama terror attack, among others.

AIADMK promises to carry out study on diverting Tamirabharani surplus water to Manimuthar dam
The AIADMK, if voted to power in 2026, will conduct detailed study on diverting surplus water of Tamirabharani from Papanasam dam to Manimuthar dam, said the former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami. Mr. Palaniswami assured a group of farmers, which met him on Tuesday at Courtallam during his Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagaththai Meetpom campaign, that if the outcome of this study was positive, the project would be implemented at any cost. Farmers complained to Mr. Palaniswami that the irrigation tanks had not been dredged in the last four years. While the irrigation tanks had thousands of truck loads of silt, permission had not been given to potters to take it free of cost to nourish their ranches even as the realtors were allowed to take it illegally for commercial purposes. 'While several thousands of cusecs of water is going waste, the government is not in a mood to construct checkdams to improve water table,' the farmers complained. Mr. Palaniswami said the AIADMK hired the services of retired Superintending Engineers and the Chief Engineers of Water Resources and the Public Works Department to select sites for constructing checkdams. 'After taking up kudimaramaththu for deepening and strengthening the irrigation tanks in a big way, we had selected four sites for constructing checkdams across the Cauvery and as many spots across the Tamirabharani. But, the DMK government, which came to power in 2021, shelved these projects for reasons best known to Chief Minister Stalin. When we return to power, we will fulfil all your genuine demands,' Mr. Palaniswami assured. Livelihood issues Tamil Nadu Differently-abled Legal Protection Association president R. Shanmugasundaram, in a memorandum to Mr. Palaniswami, said Mr. Stalin, who issued more than 50 Government Orders for the welfare of the people with disabilities, had not taken any step to implement these orders. The orders on roadside shops and allotting 5% of shops under urban and the rural local bodies to the people with disabilities remained on paper. 'Even after complaints were submitted to the Collectors concerned about the differently-abled being not allowed to participate in the auction, action was not taken due to political pressure and coercion. The monthly assistance for the differently-abled should be increased to ₹3,000 and the AIADMK should create a wing for us and get our demands to be included in the AIADMK's poll manifesto,' Mr. Shanmugasundaram said. Association treasurer Gandhimathi said the DMK's promise of reserving 4% of the government jobs for people with disabilities with necessary educational qualification was yet to be implemented. Mr. Palaniswami recalled that retrofitted motorcycles at an estimate of ₹52 crore were given to 10,000 persons with disabilities during the AIADMK rule while 5,000 persons received battery-operated wheelchairs worth ₹45 crore. Moreover, over 2 lakh physically challenged persons were given welfare assistance totalling ₹330 crore during AIADMK regime, he said. 'The differently-abed candidates appearing for the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission and Union Public Service Commission were given ₹50,000 each by the AIADMK government. Subsidy for self-employment was increased to ₹25,000. As life has become a struggle for you, we'll be with you in facing and neutralising these challenges as we return to power,' Mr. Palaniswami said. A group of government schoolchildren, who have got admission in the medical colleges thanks to the 7.50% reservation introduced by the previous AIADMK government, met and thanked Mr. Palaniswami, who presented them stethoscope.

SIR in Bihar an 'invasive reconstruction of electoral roll:' Dipankar Bhattacharya
Describing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive under way in Bihar as 'an invasive reconstruction of the electoral roll,' Dipankar Bhattacharya, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, said States including Kerala should be on guard as it could be applied in other parts of the country as well. 'If they get away with it in Bihar, they will apply it everywhere,' he said, delivering the 24th memorial lecture in memory of the journalist N. Narendran on the topic 'Bihar: Trial run for Mass Disenfranchisement.' 'In fact, some people in Kerala and Tamil Nadu may still be believing that, well, this is something only happening in north India. If it is happening in north India, it is only a matter of time it happens here. No part of India is secure. Every State, every community, every political geography, every social equation, is vulnerable,' he said. The concept of citizenship as Indians have known it no longer remains valid as people will now be forced to prove their citizenship. The migrant workers of Bihar have emerged as one of the most vulnerable sections of electors in the SIR in Bihar, given the Election Commission of India's definition of 'ordinary resident.' This could have implications for Kerala as well, which has a large migrant population, he said. The SIR in Bihar, he said, was not just about rewriting the electoral roll, but it was about rewriting the electoral rules, he said. 'By rewriting the electoral rules, you are rewriting the entire grammar of elections in India,' he said. Mr. Dipankar Bhattacharya said that the INDIA Bloc was the need of the hour, observing that the BJP has grown at the expense of all other parties. 'If we cannot identify who the common enemy is, we will be doing so at our own peril,' he said. He underscored the need for a broad-based, sustained and multi-pronged resistance against what he described as the 'fascist offensive' of the BJP-RSS in the country. On the BJP's 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, Mr. Bhattacharya said it holds grave implications for the concepts of democracy and federalism. 'Every election has its own context. A Lok Sabha election has its own context, an Assembly election has its own context, a panchayat election will have its own context. If you bulldoze, flatten everything into one single narrative, and one single context for the whole elections, there will be nothing left of India's federalism and democracy as we have known it all these years,' he said, adding that the current challenges facing the Indian people is unlike any other in the post-Independence era.
