WR conducts Indian Railways' biggest fortress tickets check at Borivli in Mumbai, collects Rs 13.5L in fines
The operation was part of WR's newly launched NAMASTE Abhiyaan — short for Namrata Aur Strong Ticket Examination — which aims to curb fare evasion through surprise, high-impact enforcement drives. The crackdown at Borivli involved a deployment of 350 personnel, including 300 ticket checking staff, along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) and govt Railway Police (GRP) support.
"This is the largest and most focused ticket-checking operation undertaken on Indian Railways at a single station," said Vineet Abhishek, chief public relations officer, WR.
"On a regular day, our suburban section sees around 2,600 cases and earns approximately Rs 8 lakh in revenue. Tuesday's drive at Borivli alone surpassed Rs 13 lakh and booked 5,192 cases — an all-time high for any single station."

Ticket checking staff usually work with shoulder bags containing hand-held terminals (HHTs) and Excess Fare Ticket (EFT) books, making it difficult to navigate overcrowded coaches and AC locals, especially during peak hours.
Under NAMASTE, WR has introduced specially designed protective vests that securely hold essential devices like HHTs, EFTs, body cameras, and compact speakers for onboard announcements.
"These new vests will significantly improve the mobility and safety of our ticket checking staff," Abhishek said. "They allow devices to be strapped close to the body, reducing clutter and enabling better access in crowded conditions."
WR is also establishing pre-custody areas at major suburban stations to streamline the handling of ticketless or unruly passengers. These zones will operate under CCTV surveillance and follow standardised documentation protocols, reducing congestion at head ticket-checking offices and ensuring greater transparency.
Abhishek added that the NAMASTE Abhiyaan will continue with more such surprise drives across key stations in Mumbai to reinforce ticket discipline and improve the overall travel experience for genuine commuters.

Farmer arrested for cultivating marijuana in Gujarat village
Ahmedabad: The Special Operations Group (SOG) police conducted a raid in Kalasar village of Chotila taluka in Gujarat's Surendranagar district and arrested 42-year-old farmer Bhabhalu Nathabhai Khachar for illegal cultivation of marijuana. Acting on a tip-off, the SOG team raided Khachar's residence and seized 38 green marijuana plants weighing approximately 1.55 kg, with an estimated market value of Rs 15,500. During interrogation, Khachar admitted to growing the plants in his courtyard for sale. A case has been registered against him at Chotila police station under the Narcotics Act, and further action is underway. Notably, the SOG operated independently of the local police, raising questions about prior knowledge and coordination. Police records reveal Khachar has a history of nine previous offences, including violations under the Prohibition Act, GP Act, Motor Vehicle Act, and BNS. Gujarat has witnessed a significant surge in narcotics seizures over the past five years, reflecting the state's role as a critical node in both domestic and international drug trafficking networks. Between 2018 and 2022, authorities confiscated 93,691 kg of drugs, 2,229 litres of liquid narcotics, and 93,763 drug pills and injections, with a total value exceeding Rs 5,000 crore. The most recent data indicates a concerning trend: in 2024, Gujarat reported the seizure of 6,574 kg of ganja (marijuana), a notable decrease from 12,486 kg in 2023. This decline may reflect shifting trafficking patterns or enhanced enforcement measures. Despite the reduction in marijuana seizures, the state continues to grapple with significant quantities of other narcotics, including heroin, hashish, and synthetic drugs. The state's extensive coastline and proximity to international borders facilitate the smuggling of narcotics, often through maritime routes and concealed shipments. For instance, in September 2021, authorities seized nearly 3,000 kg of heroin at Mundra Port, originating from Iran and disguised as talc stones from Afghanistan. In April 2025, a joint operation by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Indian Coast Guard resulted in the seizure of 300 kg of methamphetamine, valued at Rs 1,800 crore, dumped by smugglers off the Gujarat coast. Additionally, in July 2025, narcotics worth Rs 875 crore were destroyed in Kutch.

Illegal liquor valued at Rs 54 lakh seized from Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Police have seized illegal liquor valued at Rs 54 lakh from SP Sing Road in Gujarat's Ahmedabad. The Zone 7 Local Crime Branch (LCB) team recovered 15,456 bottles of fake Indian liquor. Acting on a confidential tip-off about the arrival of large quantities of illicit liquor in the city ahead of upcoming festivals, the Ahmedabad Police and Zone 7 LCB launched a targeted operation. The container was found hidden in the parking area, leading to its seizure and the arrest of the involved parties. A case has been registered at Changodar Police Station under relevant laws, and further investigation is underway. The police have informed district authorities to coordinate subsequent action. This significant seizure comes amid ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal liquor trafficking, which often increases during festive seasons. In 2025, Gujarat has stepped up its crackdown on illegal liquor trafficking, resulting in the seizure of thousands of litres of illicit and spurious alcohol across the state. Coordinated raids by the Excise Department and police have confiscated over 10,000 litres of illegal liquor in the first half of the year alone. Many of these consignments were smuggled from neighbouring states such as Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, often hidden in trucks, containers, and remote warehouses. Operations in key districts like Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot have successfully disrupted the supply chains of unregulated alcohol, preventing potential health risks linked to toxic brews. The government has intensified patrols and intelligence-led raids, particularly during festivals when demand spikes, resulting in over 200 arrests related to illegal manufacturing, transportation, and sale of illicit liquor. Despite these concerted efforts, Gujarat's extensive borders and sustained demand pose ongoing challenges, prompting authorities to continue vigilant enforcement and public awareness initiatives to combat the illegal liquor trade effectively. Over the past several years, Gujarat has witnessed a fluctuating but persistent challenge with illegal liquor trafficking. Data from state law enforcement agencies reveal that liquor seizures have consistently ranged from several thousand to over ten thousand litres annually. For instance, between 2019 and 2023, the Gujarat Excise Department, along with police units, seized approximately 40,000 to 50,000 litres of illicit alcohol each year.
