Sky's Angel Reese arrives in style for Mercury showdown
Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese has expressed a strong desire to evolve her game and become a more versatile player, and that ambition was reflected through the triple-double she posted in last Sunday's road win versus the Connecticut Sun, but she also understands the brand component of her WNBA career.

The double-double machine has actively built a large following dating back to her time at LSU, knowing full well the benefits of connecting with fans beyond the court. She fully welcomes the opportunity to be both a basketball star and prominent pop culture figure, hence her pregame fashion shows this season. Reese put on her model face upon entering Wintrust Arena, posing for the camera man ahead of the Sky's Saturday afternoon showdown with the Phoenix Mercury.
The league-leader in rebounds sported a leopard printed headscarf, camouflage shorts and multiple accessories, hours before squaring off with the team that currently owns the third-best record in the WNBA. Reese's outfits are becoming a part of her aforementioned brand. She drew attention with an all-black look at Chicago's June 7 clash with the Indiana Fever and is again commanding attention online with her most recent attire.
Angel Reese can help the WNBA broaden its reach
If a league wants to become truly successful, it need a hook that goes beyond the competition itself. Yes, superb athletes and an enjoyable product fuel the engine, but transcendent star power is required to boost it to the next gear. Just look at the 2025 NBA Finals. Two exciting teams vying for their first championship — the reigning MVP leads one and possibly the most clutch player in the game today leads the other. And yet, ABC's viewership numbers are down from last year. Great hoops and on-court suspense alone is clearly not enough these days.

The WNBA recognizes this, too, which is why it wants to market its presentation around the Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese rivalry. More so, the W is clearly focused on highlighting some of its biggest personalities. Reese, in addition to the All-Star-level impact she has had in the early portion of her career, has the power to connect with young people in a different way.
Bringing in a new audience that is not currently invested in the women's game is a top priority, and regardless of how basketball junkies feel, these grand fashion entrances generate buzz in both the WNBA and NBA. The focus has shifted to the action now, however.
Reese and the Sky (3-8) are desperate for a signature win this year, but she and Kamilla Cardoso must contend with an imposing Mercury frontcourt that consists of Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas.

CeeDee Lamb gets tackled by official during Cowboys-Rams game
Like a Lamb to the ... referee? Dallas Cowboys wideout CeeDee Lamb wasn't dressed for Saturday's preseason matchup vs. the Los Angeles Rams, but that doesn't mean he was out of the action entirely. In the second quarter, on a deep pass from Cowboys backup Joe Milton to wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, Lamb turned his back on the sideline to celebrate Mingo potentially catching a bomb from the passer. Instead of Mingo catching the ball, Lamb caught a shoulder from the referee directly to the back, wiping out both in the mashup. Lamb was flagged on the play for interfering with the referee: The thick white out-of-bounds border is strictly ref territory, so any contact with an official in that area results in a flag. While there was a foul, there was no harm, however. Lamb and the Cowboys sideline had a good laugh about the ordeal. The Cowboys would also salvage the drive, notching a field goal. Max Kepler has go-ahead hit as Phillies beat Rangers 3-2 and hand deGrom his 3rd loss in a row
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Max Kepler had a go-ahead two-run double and the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies beat the Texas Rangers 3-2, handing All-Star right-hander Jacob deGrom his third consecutive loss Saturday night. The Phillies went ahead 2-1 after Brandon Marsh had a one-out single in the seventh, Harrison Bader walked and both scored on Kepler's hit into the right-field corner. Bryson Stott greeted reliever Danny Coulombe with an RBI single. Philadelphia lefty Jesús Luzardo (11-5) struck out four and walked one in six innings. The only run he allowed was when Wyatt Langford had the Rangers' third consecutive single in the first. Jhoan Duran, their third reliever, worked a perfect ninth for his third save in as many chances since being acquired from Minnesota at the July 31 trade deadline. He has 19 saves overall. DeGrom (10-5) struck out eight and walked one in 6 2/3 innings. He had allowed five runs in each of his previous two starts, part of a career-worst streak when he gave up homers in six consecutive games. The last time he lost three starts in a row was early 2019 with the New York Mets, the season he won his second consecutive NL Cy Young Award. Corey Seager scored both Texas runs. He had the first hit in the first inning, and led off the eighth with his 17th homer. Key moment Rangers slugger Adolis García got thrown out trying to steal third base in the fourth inning right before Jake Burger had a single that likely would have made it 2-0. García had safely dived back into second base on a pickoff move by Luzardo after his one-out double. Key stat The Phillies are 30-13 when scoring at least two runs in road games. Up next Zack Wheeler (9-5, 2.64 ERA) tries to reach 10 wins for the fifth consecutive season with the Phillies in the series finale Sunday.
