Shuttle bus balm to ease commuters' auto pain

1 2 Kolkata: The WBTC on Thursday started a trial bus shuttle service between Garia crossing and New Garia station. However, it faced resistance from local auto operators as the administration scrambled to address the transportation crisis following the indefinite closure of Kavi Subhash metro station. The Kavi Subhash station will stay shut for at least next nine months for the demolition of the old complex and the construction of a new one. Passengers, especially those getting off suburban local trains, are currently being forced to pay exorbitant auto fares — Rs 30-Rs 50 to travel to Shahid Khudiram metro station. According to transport officials, efforts were underway to introduce additional bus services to alleviate the travel woes of commuters. The 1.5km stretch between Shahid Khudiram and New Garia station currently doesn't have too many transport options. The existing bus services have proven insufficient to handle the passenger load. According to local commuters like Arnab Saha and Mridula Maitra, routes 45A and 45B operate sporadically during evening hours, while Naktala-Howrah mini buses run their Garia station services only during peak office hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In France Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. "We have requested them not to terminate their services at Patuli. They have agreed in principle. However, we can only be sure when we find the resolution reflected on the ground," said Abhinava Paul of Kolkata Bus-o-pedia. The situation was further complicated by the discontinuation of routes during the pandemic, including route 206 (New Garia to Salt Lake) and mini buses S116 and S124 (Garia station to Howrah station). The transport authorities are considering whether these services can be restarted. WBTC, meanwhile, stated that it planned to operate one to two small buses during office hours. However, the resistance from auto operators threatens to impede this solution. A meeting between all stakeholders is likely soon to discuss possible steps.

Goa govt may stop sale of alcohol in glass bottles near beaches

Porvorim: CM Pramod Sawant on Thursday said in the assembly that he will consider banning the sale of alcohol in glass bottles and will restrict its sale only in cans along the beach belt. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said this after ruling and opposition MLAs criticised the increasing cases of injuries suffered by beachgoers from glass bottles on the beach. Tourism minister Rohan Khaunte said that before the new tourist season begins, a board in both English and Hindi with dos and don'ts for tourists will be put up across beach entrances in the state to sensitise visitors. He said that a bill increasing the fines for creating a nuisance in tourist places from the present upper limit of Rs 50,000 will be brought in this assembly session, and he asked MLAs to support the bill. 'Tourists who come to Goa want to go in the waters without slippers to feel the sand. But some tourists drink and break bottles on the beach, and others suffer cuts due to this on their feet. Time and again, we bring this topic in the House, but nothing has changed. I saw a couple in the water the other day with shoes on. I asked them why, and they said their friend received nine stitches due to cuts from glass bottles, and he and his wife had to cut short their holiday to Goa,' said Calangute MLA Michael Lobo. He said that all tourist destinations, including countries like Sri Lanka, have already banned glass bottles and plastics on beaches to safeguard them. Lobo said that if this continues, the quality of tourists coming to Goa will deteriorate. Khaunte said that breaking bottles on beaches is already liable for fines under two acts, and since action began in 2022, the number of cases went down from two in 2022, to four in 2023, 20 in 2024, to nil so far in 2025. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'The environment department has already notified a deposit scheme where users can return glass and plastic bottles and receive a deposit sum in return. The CM has already held a meeting and has directed to implement it at the earliest. We have a beach vigil app. You can click a photo and upload it on the app, and agencies appointed will get the waste removed from the beach,' he said. 'Maximum wine stores and bar businesses are being run by Goans. At least along the coastal belt, we will consider banning the sale of alcohol in glass bottles and ensure only the sale of cans,' said the CM. Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai asked why waste is still visible on beaches even as a contract at Rs 90 crore has been awarded. Khaunte said that a new agency has been appointed from March, which covers 50 beaches now instead of the earlier 32, in addition to 122 dead-ends, which were earlier a point of dispute between panchayats and cleaning agencies. He said that 525 labourers are deployed, and the hours of cleaning have also been increased now from the earlier six hours. Khaunte said that if any MLA can get women's self-help groups to do the work, the same will be incorporated into the beach cleaning work.

Indian hospitality sector dips on geopolitical tensions in June quarter

India's hospitality sector experienced a slowdown in the June quarter (Q2 CY2025), a period already known for seasonal weakness. This year's dip, however, was amplified by external shocks including the Pahalgam terror attack and an Air India crash in Ahmedabad, which significantly dented travel sentiment across key markets. 'The dip in Q2 CY2025 (April–June) performance was largely driven by a seasonal slowdown and early monsoon impact, further compounded by external national incidents such as the Indo-Pak tensions and the Air India crash, which curtailed travel demand across key markets,' noted consultancy firm HVS Anarock in its monthly hospitality monitor. Average room rates (ARR) declined sequentially across major cities. Jaipur saw the steepest drop, with rates down 37–39 per cent from the March quarter. New Delhi and Goa followed with ARR dips of 27–29 per cent, while Mumbai and Gurugram saw declines of 20–22 per cent. Occupancy levels also fell across cities, with Jaipur reporting the highest drop of 20–22 per cent, followed by New Delhi at 11–13 per cent. The dip reflects a sharp pullback in travel, particularly in markets that are heavily dependent on tourism and business travel. Domestic air travel also mirrored the softening trend, with passenger traffic falling 2.8 per cent sequentially to 41.9 million. IHCL, ITC Hotels report impact, but signal resilience Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), which operates the Taj chain, reported a 3 per cent top-line impact due to geopolitical tensions in northern India. Despite this, IHCL posted a 32 per cent year-on-year rise in revenue from operations to Rs 2,041.8 crore. Revenue per available room (RevPAR) at domestic properties rose 11 per cent YoY. ITC Hotels also flagged disruptions in May due to geopolitical events but noted a recovery following ceasefire announcements. 'While the geopolitical developments in May had temporarily affected business in certain locations, the hospitality sector bounced back progressively thereafter,' the company said, adding that long-term fundamentals remain strong. Festive and monsoon demand expected to lift Sept quarter Industry insiders remain optimistic about the upcoming quarter. 'We have a slew of festivals in the September quarter and the Independence-Day long weekend, too, is showing good booking trends early on. With monsoon demand also inching up now amid a steady geopolitical environment, the September quarter should be that of recovery,' an executive said. Puneet Chhatwal, managing director and CEO of IHCL, expressed confidence in a strong second half. 'Notwithstanding geopolitical tensions, we are expecting a strong performance in August, followed by an equally strong September,' he told analysts earlier this month. The combination of a favourable demographic profile, rising consumption, and sustained domestic demand is expected to support the hospitality sector's recovery in the quarters ahead.
