Wolfgang Puck Reveals His New Dishes for the 97th Oscars Governors Ball

Yahoo27-02-2025

Chef Wolfgang Puck and his culinary team are back for the 31st annual Oscars Governors Ball — where they'll be serving his beloved staples alongside some inventive new dishes. (Read Puck's history of catering the Governors Ball here.)
"We always have some new things but people really like the tradition a lot," the legendary chef told Los Angeles at the Oscars Governors Ball preview on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
"We have to make our chicken pot pie, for Prince Albert and Barbra Streisand in case she shows up, but many other people too. And then we have new dishes, like this year, we have the [Pad] Thai noodles, and we make them with ginger, garlic and a little Champagne," he said as poured the alcohol into a sizzling stir-fry.
"I love Asian influence," said Puck regarding the cultural twist this year. "We have Chinois, our Asian restaurant, and then we have Merois at the Pendry hotel. I've always loved Asian food — I love spices."
Asian food is highlighted across this year's menu with small plate stations featuring sushi and sashimi alongside izakaya favorites like chicken karaage. This will complement tray-passed items like Duck Bao Buns and Miso Cod Lettuce Wraps.
Among the standby favorites are his signature Smoked Salmon Oscar Matzohs, Aged White Cheddar Mac & Cheese and Pea Agnolotti Pasta.
Another returning dish, which Eric Klein, Senior Vice President of Culinary-Partner of Wolfgang Puck Catering, presided over at the preview, is the Miyazaki Wagyu — "which is one our favorite beefs [we've had] for the last five-six years already, people love it, so we have to do it all the time," Puck said.
Chef Elliot Grover (who oversees Cut at 45 Park Lane) will join forces with Puck for the third time in a row to bring "a taste of London" to Hollywood.
'Elliot is doing the Beef Wellington," Puck said, "and one of his famous [dishes] in England — fish and chips: it's nice and crispy fish with some good potatoes."
In addition to the usual comfort food options, the chef and his catering team have added special "Late-Night Classics" to the menu, with bites like sliders, chicken tenders and french fries. "We're going to make some bar food," Klein chimed in.
The culinary experience is topped off with an extensive dessert menu: pastries, ice cream, cookies, bonbons and the iconic golden chocolate Oscar.
"We have many desserts," Puck says. "Even from Austria we have the apple strudel — this is really delicious with marzipan ice cream.'
To pair with Puck's curated menu are signature cocktails from Tequila Don Julio, created by famed mixologist Charles Joly and 2024's World Best Bar Handshake Speakeasy from Mexico City.
The "Standing Ovation" cocktail is a take on the espresso martini — made with Tequila Alma Miel, and rimmed with gold, smoked sea-salt and vanilla, and another favorite is "The Clear Winner" (with Tequila Don Julio Reposado, hibiscus tea, tamarind syrup, lime juice, and grapefruit juice), alongside a Gimlet.
"I wanted to create something that was people-pleasing," said Handshake's mixologist Eric Van Beek. "Even if you like boozy drinks, the drinks we created are easy-going."
Wines for the evening are from returning French partner Clarendelle & Domaine Clarence Dillon: Clarendelle Bordeaux Blanc 2023 (white), Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2015 (a red) and a new Clarendelle Bordeaux Rose 2022 — alongside a Clarendelle Amberwine 2021 to pair with desserts.
And for the first year, Champagne Lallier will be the exclusive Champagne featured at all Oscars events and the Oscars are adding a sake partner for the Governors Ball as well (to complement Puck's Asian additions).
The 97th Oscars premieres live this Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 4 p.m. PST/7 p.m. EST on ABC.

South Knoxville losing one of its most popular restaurants amid Sevier Avenue construction

As streetscape construction ramps up, a popular restaurant at the east end of Sevier Avenue is closing after almost a decade in South Knoxville. Landing House owner Zach Land took to Instagram on May 19 to announce the restaurant's closure. June 8 will be the last day open for Landing House, which is uniquely located in a house rather than a typical restaurant space. It's part of the allure for the Chinese and Cambodian-style restaurant near the Sevier Avenue intersection of Island Home Avenue and Foggy Bottom Street, where a roundabout is being built for the streetscape project. Landing House was one of the first spots along the South Knoxville corridor that transformed the street from a desolate, seemingly uninviting stretch into a hotpot for those looking to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and spend the day outside. "Ten years ago, my wife Hao and I saw a 'For Sale' sign on a neat, creepy old house in the neighborhood we lived. Sevier Ave was a desolate place that was honestly … a little sketchy," Land wrote in the Instagram post. "Now that shabby little neighborhood we once knew is completely unrecognizable." Landing House changed that perception, with popular menu items like chicken and shrimp pho, beef filet fried rice and chili crisp noodles making the restaurant stand out as a culinary anchor on Sevier Avenue. The street is now home to a variety of restaurants, bars and breweries, from Redbud Kitchen and Angry Dumplings Tea to Alliance Brewing Company and Hi-Wire Brewing. Balter Beerworks executive chef Hux Jones said in 2023 that Landing House chef Derek Martin was his favorite in Knoxville. "I am so impressed with all the progression he has had with his culinary career," Jones wrote about Martin at the time. "He has really embraced the Asian cuisine with full force." Knox News has also recognized Landing House as one of the best restaurants around town. After A Dopo earned a spot on USA TODAY's Restaurants of the Year list in 2025, Knox News recognized Landing House as one of the restaurants we wish made the list. "We thought it would be great for people to have a place to grab some food to go along with their local craft beers and plowed head first into the insanely scary and hectic world of restaurant ownership," the Instagram post read. Land said in the post it's best to close Landing House "on our own terms than be forced to close in the future." Five months into the 18-month construction period for the $19.2 million city streetscape, Landing House is in a complicated position, with parking made more difficult by the under-construction roundabout and other street work. Streetscape construction is expected to last until summer 2026. "Our business has grown substantially every year we have been open and that is due to your loyal patronage and word of mouth and that means the world to us," Land wrote. "Once again, thank you Knoxville and especially South Knoxville for all your support." Joanna Hayes is the restaurant and retail reporter. Ed Sheeran Celebrates India on Rousing Single ‘Sapphire'

Ed Sheeran has released a new single, 'Sapphire.' The song, off his forthcoming album Play, is accompanied by a music video shot in India. The video features appearances by Arijit Singh, who sings and plays sitar on the track, and Shah Rukh Khan. 'Sapphire,' produced by Ilya Salmanzadeh, Johnny McDaid, and Savan Kotecha, showcases South-Asian percussion as Sheeran sings about passion with a lover. 'Touching on your body while you're pushing on me/ Don't you end the party I could do this all week/ We'll be dancing till the morning/ Go to bed we won't sleep,' he sings on the lively track. Copyright Plans Ed Sheeran Previews Collaboration With Dave Grohl, John Mayer ''Sapphire' was the first song i finished for Play that made me know where the album was heading,' Sheeran explained on Instagram. 'It's why I finished the recording process in Goa surrounded by some of the best musicians in India. It was an incredible creative process.' He added that he shot the music video while on tour in India because 'we wanted to showcase the beauty and breadth of the country and its culture.' 'The final jigsaw piece for me was getting @arijitsingh on the record, i'll make a post about that in a few days but it was a journey to get there and such an amazing day of music and family,' Sheeran added. 'Me and him have done a full Punjabi version of the song that will come out in the next few weeks, which has a lot more of him on it. This is the album version of the song, and my favourite song on the album. Hope you guys love it.' Sheeran will unveil his next studio album, Play, on Sept. 12. 'Play was an album that was made as a direct response to the darkest period of my life,' Sheeran shared in a statement. 'Coming out of all of that I just wanted to create joy and technicolour, and explore cultures in the countries I was touring.' The LP was recorded in all the different locations the singer-songwriter visited and completed in Goa, India. It brought a lightness back to him, giving him some of 'the most fun, explorative creative days of my life.' He first previewed the album with 'Azizam,' an upbeat, vibrant single about letting go on the dance floor, and has since shared 'Old Phone.' Play is the first installment in a new series of albums from Sheeran. It will be followed by Rewind, Fast-Forward, and Stop, continuing the tradition he started with Plus, Multiply, Divide, Subtract, and Equals. Miss Grand International's Rachel Gupta Steps Down, Alleges Harassment

Originally appeared on E! Online Rachel Gupta has taken off her crown for the last time. The former Miss Grand International 2024, who won the title in October, announced she was stepping down from the role due to mistreatment and harassment from Miss Grand International Public Company Limited (MGI), the organization behind the Thai beauty pageant. "The whole time that I was working with Miss Grand International, the last seven months,' Gupta said in a May 28 YouTube video, 'I was constantly harassed, manipulated, ignored and left to fend for myself." In addition to her allegations that she was made to sign a 'one-sided' contract and was often left without 'basic amenities,' the 21-year-old alleged that "immediately after winning, they moved me into a cramped hotel room, where all my suitcases couldn't open properly because there wasn't enough space." Gupta then alleged she gained weight as a result of eating takeout food since "there were no pots and pans" in the lodging provided by MGI. And then, in turn, she said the organization ridiculed her because of her weight gain. More from E! "They sent a representative to me, and he just comes up to me and starts pinching me in places. He's like, 'Oh, you need to lose weight here. You need to lose weight here.' It's so embarrassing. It makes you feel so small and so bad." Ultimately, the beauty queen decided to relinquish her title after she said she was 'stuck' in Thailand with 'no security,' unable to return to her home in India, and felt unsupported by MGI during her time there, including after $1000 allegedly went missing. 'I realized, in that moment, that these people will never support me,' she said. 'Frankly they don't care if I live or die. As long as I'm there to smile at their events, as long as I keep my body super skinny, the way they like, they don't care if I live or die.' Shortly after Gupta published her video, MGI announced on Instagram that they had revoked her title. Later, they refuted her allegations. "Miss Grand International Public Company Limited (MGI) issues this formal statement in response to a series of false, misleading, and defamatory claims made publicly by Ms. Rachel Gupta, former Miss Grand International 2024," the organization said in a statement to People published June 5. "Her remarks, circulated via a video published on 28 May 2025, distort facts and misrepresent her contractual relationship with MGI—relying solely on emotional appeals and tearful storytelling without any physical evidence to support her claims." In addition to emphasizing that Gupta's claims, including allegations directed at MGI's chief operating officer, were 'rejected in their entirety' by the organization, they noted their belief in the beauty pageant. "MGI will not allow personal attacks or manipulative narratives,' the statement continued, 'to undermine the credibility of its executives or the integrity of the organization." E! News has reached out to Gupta and MGI for comment and has not heard back. Read on for more stars who were formerly beauty pageant winners.
