The Hindu4 days ago
Congress MPs, who were protesting against the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls in Bihar and the alleged voter fraud in various constituencies, on Tuesday (August 12, 2025), participated in the protest wearing a T-shirt bearing the face of a woman voter, Minta Devi.
Congress MPs, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Gaurav Gogoi, were seen wearing a white T-shirt with the photo of Minta Devi, a woman named as a voter in Daraundha Assembly constituency as per the electoral rolls. Her age was mentioned as 124 years in the electoral roll.
Minta Devi, 124 years old.
Born when India had a Viceroy, still voting when we have Wi-Fi.
Either she's a time traveller… or our voter list is pure fiction.
This is the kind of data in our electoral rolls, @ECISVEEP.#VoteChori#VoteNammaHakkupic.twitter.com/H3h0NzvMKq — Mansoor Khan (@MansoorKhanINC) August 10, 2025
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had mentioned her name and the names of two other women who were claimed to be more than 100 years old, according to the electoral rolls, during his press conference on August 7, 2025.
The Congress has pointed out that the oldest living person according to the Guiness Book of World Records is Ethel Caterham from United Kingdom, who is 115 years old.

Karnataka woman refuses to use free bus rides under Shakti Scheme, sparks online debate

The Congress government's Shakti scheme in Karnataka, which allows women to travel for free on state-run buses, has been widely hailed and even emulated by other states. But an X post by a woman who chose not to avail the benefit has triggered an intense debate online about subsidies and personal responsibility. 'I feel so happy and proud whenever I pay for my bus ticket. The conductor asks—why? No Aadhaar card? And I reply—No sir, I don't take free tickets. Till date, I have never travelled using a free ticket. I don't want to put more burden on my state or country by using these freebies,' she wrote. Her remarks quickly went viral, with netizens split down the middle. Some applauded her decision as an act of civic responsibility, while others dismissed it as a display of privilege. One user wrote, 'Good for you. India needs more people like you who are helping out their poor brethren. Kudos.' Another commented, 'I salute you. I don't have a ration card, I don't use gas subsidy, and I will not work for any organisation that discriminates by caste.' But there was also criticism. 'Incorrect spin given here. None of us should consume state subsidy, whether for cooking gas, healthcare or travel. These schemes are meant for the disadvantaged, not those of us favoured by birth lottery,' a person argued. 'There's nothing wrong with accepting freebies, but one should carefully consider whether they truly need them and at what hidden cost, since they can be recovered later through inflation,' a user said.

Public has woken up: Rahul shares new video highlighting vote theft

New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) Alluding to Bollywood movies, the Congress stepped up its campaign against alleged 'vote theft" on Saturday by releasing a new video titled 'laapata vote" to highlight the claim. Posting the video on X, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said, ''Chori chori, chupke chupke' no more, the public has woken up." His party posted the video on its official social media account and said the 'theft of your vote is theft of rights". 'Let's raise our voice against vote theft together and save our rights," the party said. In the video, a man is seen pleading in the police station that his 'vote has been stolen" and tells the officials there that 'lakhs of votes are being stolen", leaving the police personnel wondering if their vote has also been 'stolen". The minute-long video is titled 'laapata vote' with 'ladies' cut out from between, a reference to the Kiran Rao-directed movie 'Laapata Ladies'. The Congress released a video depicting how fake votes were being cast on Wednesday, too. Gandhi had shared that minute-long video and said, 'Aapke vote ki chori aapke adhikar ki chori, aapki pehchaan ki chori hai (Theft of your vote is theft of your rights, theft of your identity)." That video depicts a family entering a polling booth with two people telling them that their votes have already been cast, and it ends with the two persons casting fake votes, showing a thumbs up to an officer sitting at the table with an 'election chori aayog' display plate on his table. The Congress has claimed that 'vote chori" was a 'do-or-die" issue for it, and announced a roadmap to take its allegations to the people through various activities. The opposition party has also launched a web portal for people to register and demand accountability from the poll panel against what it called 'vote chori", and express support for the demand for digital voter rolls. Congress govt borrowed more in 20 months than KCR did in 10 years, says KTR

HYDERABAD: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Friday alleged that the debt incurred by the Congress government under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy in the past 20 months was more than the borrowing made by former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's administration over a decade. 'We have a state with strong revenues, but the Congress is incapable of governance,' Rama Rao said after unveiling Praja Yodhudu, a book on BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao written by Mahendra Thotakuri. He said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, despite the absence of revenue, the BRS government continued welfare schemes such as Rythu Bandhu, Kalyana Lakshmi, pensions and paddy procurement. This, he said, was possible because of 'an efficient leader' at the helm. Rama Rao accused the present chief minister of focusing on raising money and 'sending bundles to Delhi' instead of working for the people. Addressing the Independence Day celebrations at Telangana Bhavan, he criticised the state government over urea shortage, noting that farmers were waiting in long queues for the fertiliser. 'Revanth Reddy has brought back the old Congress days. Independence does not just mean self-governance, but living with self-respect. Under KCR's leadership, we had that for 10 years. Now, Delhi's rule has been forced on Telangana,' he said.
