Tamil Nadu parties back Kamal Haasan amid Kannada row, say remarks misinterpreted
CHENNAI: As the controversy over Makkal Needhi Maiam president Kamal Haasan's remarks on Kannada language escalated further, reactions from most political parties in Tamil Nadu remained subdued, unlike their counterparts in Karnataka, who have vehemently and unanimously condemned the actor-politician. The Karnataka HC came down heavily on Haasan on Tuesday for his remark that Kannada was born form Tamil and his refusal to apologise.
Despite the developments, the ruling DMK and the Congress in TN, both allies of MNM with the latter being the ruling party in Karnataka, did not release any statement on the issue.
However, TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai, when contacted, said, he has been responding to queries from the media and has clearly stated that Haasan did not say anything wrong and his remarks have been misunderstood. 'His statement should not be politicised. Democratic forces will stand by him,' Selvaperunthagai said.
When reached out for a comment, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said scholars like Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai (Sundaranar) have written about the languages that came out of Tamil and Hassan might have read them and reflected. VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan told reporters, 'Attempts are being made to politicise this as a linguistic or ethnic issue.'
In a social media post, VCK MP D Ravikumar defended Haasan by citing works of Sundaranar and Robert Caldwell. Warning that regressive forces responsible for all types politics of hatred are behind the controversy, he appealed to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to protect Dravidian unity. NTK leader Seeman saidHaasan only reiterated established views of scholars. 'Are those criticising him experts in linguistics? This is a deliberate attempt to create unrest, and TN will not allow it,' he said.

Mohandas Pai says professionals working in a state like Karnataka must learn local language
Joining the ongoing language row, tech investor Mohandas Pai said professionals working in a state like Karnataka must learn the local language and use it, especially in public dealings. Terming the refusal of certain public-dealing officials to learn Kannada as "arrogance", he said it causes unnecessary tensions, which are easily avoidable. The Kannada language issue in Bengaluru has become a flashpoint in recent months. With the rise of workers to Bengaluru from various states over the years, there have been growing concerns among locals about the perceived erosion of the language in public life. "Bengaluru is the most welcoming place. The local population speaking Kannada is only 33 per cent. Lot of people have come, they've benefitted, they're doing very well... "Now, we have small problems because the people who come from outside, many of them become arrogant and refuse to speak a few words of Kannada. Speak a few words of Kannada, show respect to the local community. We must show respect to any community," Pai, Chairman of Aarin Capital, said in an interview to PTI. Pai said this approach applies everywhere. Whether one is moving to Bengal or Maharashtra, learning a few words of the local language would help outsiders connect with the community. Live Events Referring to the recent SBI dispute , wherein a bank manager reportedly refused to speak Kannada with a customer -- a stance that sparked public outrage, protests by pro-Kannada groups, and eventually an official apology from the bank -- Pai said the situation could have been avoided. "What she could have done is, because she's in a service job, say, sir, I'm sorry, I can't speak the language, I'm learning. I'll ask my colleague to help me out and be respectful. That's all that is required. Nothing else," he said. Pai stressed that customer service professionals, especially in rural areas, must prioritise the customer's language and cultural context: "If you happen to be in a rural area, the customer cannot speak Hindi or English. You must speak the local language."

Police Unease In Bengaluru As Heads Roll; BJP, Congress Spar Over ‘Scapegoat' Charges
Last Updated: Bengaluru Stampede: The BJP's attack follows Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's decision to suspend Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, along with several officials Dissent is growing within the Karnataka police following the suspension of senior officers in the aftermath of the Bengaluru stampede, with many personnel believing the police are being made 'scapegoats" for the tragic incident that claimed 11 lives. Police constable Narasimharaju staged a protest holding a photo of Dr BR Ambedkar, symbolising his call for justice. He also wrote a letter to the Governor, requesting the cancellation of Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayanand's suspension. In his letter, Narasimharaju urged the Governor to provide protection to the police force, highlighting concerns over the treatment of officers working under difficult conditions. Meanwhile, the BJP slammed the Congress government in Karnataka over the stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, accusing the ruling party leaders of using cops as scapegoats to deflect blame. Former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior BJP leader BS Yediyurappa termed the state government's response as 'shameful," accusing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar of abandoning their moral responsibility during the unfolding tragedy. 'It is a shameful act that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers themselves stood up and the entire government took responsibility for the system, and while celebrating RCB's victory, they forgot their moral responsibility," Yediyurappa said in a post on X in Kannada. 'To calm public anger, they have made five police officers, including the Police Commissioner, scapegoats. This is a dark chapter in Karunad's history," he added. The BJP's attack follows Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's decision to suspend Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, along with several senior officials — including the ACP, DCP (Central), Cubbon Park SHO, and the stadium in-charge — in the wake of the stampede. The incident took place on Wednesday evening outside Chinnaswamy Stadium during the IPL victory celebration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which was co-hosted by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and DNA Networks. BJP Mounts Attack Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R Ashoka, also voiced similar concerns, questioning the apparent contradictions within the Congress leadership. 'Yesterday, DK Shivakumar said the police had issued prior warnings and were not responsible. Now Siddaramaiah has suspended the Police Commissioner and several other top officials. What is going on?" Further holding the Congress leadership responsible for the stampede, he said, 'It was the police only who took all the injured people and the bodies to hospitals. The police gave first aid, did everything," he said. 'Do hard work but get bad remarks in return. This is the government." An FIR was registered on Thursday against the RCB franchise, event manager DNA Entertainment, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) management, and others. The case is now being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Congress Responds Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge responded on Friday to the recent stampede in Bengaluru, confirming that the officials involved had been suspended and that a magisterial inquiry had been initiated to probe the incident. 'The officers who are responsible have been suspended. We have made no scapegoats… A magisterial enquiry has been ordered and our next action will be according to the findings of the enquiry," Kharge said. Further, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said the government did not organise the celebrations at the stadium. 'We did not make any request to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise or the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in this regard, and they had organised the victory celebration event. The government also felt that it should felicitate the players and be a part of the celebration because it was a Bengaluru team. That's all," he said. The Karnataka High Court, taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, issued a notice to the state government and requested a status report. The matter has been scheduled for the next hearing on June 10.
