CM Naidu calls for plastic-free Andhra, links excessive use to cancer risk

Time of India4 days ago
Tirupati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister
N Chandrababu Naidu
on Saturday called for the elimination of plastic to protect the environment, claiming that "excessive use of plastic can lead to cancer".
Addressing a meeting in Tirupati as part of the '
Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra
' initiative, Naidu said that plastic has become "the biggest demon" threatening the environment.
The vision lays out a comprehensive framework for economic advancement, social equity,
environmental sustainability
, and governance excellence.
"To protect the environment, we must chase away this plastic demon. Excessive use of plastic can lead to cancer... No one should fall victim to this," the chief minister said.
From toothbrushes to the plates we eat from, he pointed out that plastic has become a part of daily life, adding that common items like water bottles, cups, and covers are harmful.
He further claimed that "
plastic pollution
is contaminating the soil", hindering the percolation of rainwater, and causing other environmental issues.
Naidu announced plans to make the state secretariat plastic-free by August 15, extend this initiative to all municipalities by October 2, and implement it across the state by December.
Calling on every citizen to be part of the 'Swachh Andhra' mission by keeping their homes and surroundings clean, he also promised to clear all piled-up garbage across the state by October.
The chief minister noted that the TDP-led NDA government had approved solar panel installations for 20 lakh homes, turning rooftops, offices, and fields into hubs of solar energy.
"I'm focusing on
green energy
. With global warming triggering multiple challenges, green energy is the only solution," he said.
Criticising YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, Naidu alleged that the latter "created chaos" during a recent visit to Bangarupalyam by "dumping mangoes" on the road while meeting farmers.
Naidu said the NDA alliance government came to the rescue of mango farmers by ensuring a payment of Rs 12,000 per tonne-Rs 4,000 from the government and Rs 8,000 from buyers.
Earlier, during a visit to an integrated waste processing plant at Tukivakam village in Tirupati, the chief minister directed officials to make Andhra Pradesh "a national model in waste processing and utilisation." PTI STH SSK

‘People are paying taxes out of confidence in govt, fear of non-payment': Gujarat CM

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday said that people are now paying taxes with the confidence that the revenue is being used 'effectively' with government schemes 'reaching the most marginalised sections of society'. He also said the fear of strict action against non-payment has contributed to greater compliance. Businesses, he said, are also paying Goods and Services Tax (GST) because they are receiving the necessary support from the government and their enterprises are performing well. Patel was addressing a public meeting in Suigam village of Banaskantha district on Thursday, where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth Rs 358.37 crore. He made the remarks in the context of Income Tax Day. He said, 'Today is Income Tax Day… Today, many farmers have become income tax payers. Earlier, people used to run away from paying tax… Earlier, (people used to think that) when my neighbour is not paying the tax, why should I pay it… Now, people think that if the tax is not paid then it brings strict action. So, people pay the tax (also) with confidence that the income from tax is not only put to good use, but also that the benefit of government schemes has reached the most marginalised person. Its benefit has reached all.' Referring to GST, the CM said, 'The point is that when will the business class pay the tax? Will anybody pay tax just like that? One will pay the tax if the business is doing good and is earning well.' Without providing specifics, Patel said that Rs 2 lakh crore worth of GST had been collected in one month. 'The government is happy that it has made an income of Rs 2 lakh crore,' he said. 'If you want GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation) and business, then it requires facilities like roads, water, and electricity. If all these facilities are available, then good businesses are established. And when you do well, then you pay tax. It is a whole chain. Nobody is paying tax just like that. He (a businessman) will pay the tax when he gets all the facilities,' the CM said. Patel was accompanied by Gujarat Assembly Speaker and Banaskantha MLA Shankar Chaudhary, state Industries Minister Balvantsinh Rajput, and others.

IOA EC puts up an united front, insists on working together in push for 2036 Olympics

The Indian Olympic Association put up a united front on Thursday with the entire Executive Council appearing together in public for the first time in almost 18 months, confirming the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as the CEO, and setting up a panel to tackle doping. Raghuram's appointment by Usha in January 2024 at a salary of Rs. 20 lakh per month and other perks had been the biggest bone of contention between IOA president P.T. Usha and other members and had remained unratified. A majority of EC members had even brought in a no-confidence motion against Usha last year before it was dropped. Officially titled 'Powering India's Sporting Aspirations: IOA's Vision 2036' there was no denying the meet was primarily to affirm truce within the IOA. No AGM had been held since March 2023 and a stormy EC meeting in September 2024 had failed to break the impasse. Raghuram, who was also present on the occasion, had continued to discharge his duties and was also part of the Indian delegation to meet IOC in Lausanne last month. 'Everything is sorted and that is why he is sitting here with me. Everything is ratified,' Usha declared, 'Raghu Iyer is the CEO of IOA,' AIFF president Kalyan Choubey insisted and IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav, one of Usha's most vocal opponents, said, 'It's like small bickering and we are back and happy to be together.' The beginning of the end of the deadlock had begun with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya holding informal meetings with Usha and EC members and trying to get them to negotiate. The IOA visit to Lausanne as part of India's bid for the 2036 Olympics, which included ministry officials, and IOC feedback further helped bring about a rapprochement. 'We are focused on our long-term goal of transforming India into a sporting powerhouse. It's part of our resolve to power through India's sporting aspirations via Mission 2036,' Usha said, adding that the IOA was committed to inclusivity and gender parity in Indian sport. 'We are equally committed to making sports an inclusive space for women, young athletes, those from tribal areas and every Indian who dreams of sporting excellence,' she said. On the new Sports Bill, Choubey said that 'it clearly mentions that the government has brought some guidelines and it is not to interfere. If there is any conflict, the rules of the international body will prevail. Idea is not to create any confrontation or confusion, the idea is to work together.' The seven-member anti-doping panel, meanwhile, will be headed by India's Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal after India's poor record was flagged by the IOC.

Supreme Court agrees to hear contempt plea against demolitions in Assam's Goalpara

The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a contempt petition against Assam's chief secretary and Goalpara district authorities for alleged violations of the court's earlier guidelines on eviction and demolition drives in June, Live Law reported. A bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran issued notices to the chief secretary and other officials, seeking their responses in the matter within two weeks, PTI reported. Advocate Sanjay Hegde, appearing for the petitioners, told the court that the state authorities issued eviction notices to residents in Goalpara's Hasilabeel village just two days before razing their homes. He argued that even those accused of encroaching on government land are entitled to due legal procedure. 'These are 667 poor families who have been there on that land for 60–70 years,' he said, adding that many had been forced to settle in higher areas due to shifts in the course of the Brahmaputra river. The petitioners contended that the evictions and demolitions 'predominantly targeted a minority community, leaving out similarly placed persons from the majority community untouched', PTI reported. When Hegde requested interim relief in the form of a status quo, the court cautioned that any relief would not apply if the demolitions involved government land. The petition relies on a Supreme Court judgement from November that held as illegal the practice of demolishing properties of persons accused of crimes as a punitive measure. It added that processes must be followed before removing allegedly illegal encroachments. The judgement, however, specified that the guidelines would not apply to unauthorised structures on public property, including roads, riverbanks and railway lines. The contempt plea has been filed by eight residents of Hasilabeel village in Goalpara who claim to have lived in the area for over six decades with valid voter identity cards, PAN and Aadhaar cards, Live Law reported. According to the plea, the demolitions there began after a circle officer issued an undated notice on June 13, giving just two days to vacate land reportedly allotted to the Assam Fisheries Development Corporation in 2015. They alleged the authorities only gave common notices to the affected through announcements on a microphone, rather than giving individual notices. On June 16, district authorities in Goalpara demolished the homes of 690 families in Hasilabeel. This was followed by a second drive in the district on July 12, when 1,080 more families were evicted from their homes in the Paikan Reserve Forest. Between 2016 and August 2024, more than 10,620 families – the majority of them Muslim – have been evicted from government land, according to data provided by the state revenue and disaster management department.
