Justin Gaethje likes chances to beat Islam Makhachev better than he did Khabib Nurmagomedov

Justin Gaethje hopes he gets the opportunity to challenge UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.
Gaethje (25-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) will look to re-enter the title picture when he takes on Dan Hooker (24-12 MMA, 14-8 UFC) in a five-round lightweight co-main event (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) March 8 at UFC 313 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Gaethje, a former interim lightweight champion, fell short twice in his pursuit for undisputed gold – suffering submission losses to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254 and Charles Oliveira at UFC 274.
Makhachev has defended his lightweight title a division-record four times and already holds wins over top-ranked contenders Arman Tsarukyan, Oliveira and Dustin Poirier. However, he's yet to fight Gaethje.
"I want to fight Makhachev, he is the champ, and I do believe that he is a better matchup for me than Khabib," Gaethje said during a Q&A on his YouTube channel. "But he's good."
Although Gaethje was one of few fighters to ever win a round against Nurmagomedov, he's not confident that he could have beaten that version of "The Eagle."
"I think Khabib was probably the one that I felt even if I performed better, I'm not sure that if I could've beaten him that night specifically," Gaethje said. "That night that I fought Khabib, I would say he is my toughest opponent to date."

UFC on ESPN 71 video: Neil Magny grounds and pounds Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos for TKO

Neil Magny is inevitable. The UFC welterweight fight, wins, decision wins, total fight time, total strikes and significant strikes leader returned to the win column with an impressive stoppage of Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos at UFC on ESPN 71. The bout took place at the UFC Apex, and came to an end by TKO at 4:39 of Round 2. Magny (30-13 MMA, 23-12 UFC) fought through a close opening round that two of the official judges scored for dos Santos (25-10-1 MMA, 11-6-1 UFC). In the second round, the fight went to the ground, where Magny worked through a few tough positions from his back. Once he found space to get out, Magny took dos Santos back to the mat, secured back control, and proceeded to rain down heavy ground and pound until referee Mark Smith saw enough. Check out video of the finish below (via X): With the result, Magny snaps a two-fight skid to pick up his 30th career win just a few hours before his birthday. Luka Doncic agrees to long-term contract extension with Lakers

Ever since the Los Angeles Lakers acquired superstar Luka Doncic six months ago, there has been a twinge of anxiety regarding whether he would sign a long-term contract extension with them this summer. Under the terms of the contract he came to L.A. with, he was able to opt out and become a free agent in 2026. But that will not be happening. On Saturday, the first day he was eligible to do so, he agreed to a three-year, $165 extension, per ESPN. "Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension, with a player option in 2028, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN," wrote Shams Charania. "The critical new deal keeps Doncic out of free agency next summer, eliminating his 2026-27 player option in place of the new contract." This extension puts the 26-year-old in position for an even bigger payday in a few years. "Doncic could opt out in 2028 and sign a new deal for 35% of the salary cap, which projects to five years and $417 million. In doing so, Doncic would recoup all the money lost when he was traded by the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he had been eligible to sign a five-year, $315 million supermax extension this summer." Doncic played well as a member of the Lakers this past season, but he was clearly out of shape and a bit hobbled. However, once they were knocked out of the first round of the playoffs, he instantly embarked on a physical transformation that has had everyone talking lately. Some people around the league feel that, as a result of his new physique, Doncic could be ready to put forth an MVP campaign this coming season.

UFC on ESPN 71 video: Andrey Pulyaev folds Nick Klein for first win in promotion

Andrey Pulyaev's first win in the UFC didn't need the judges. Pulyaev (10-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC), like his opponent and fellow Dana White's Contender Series vet Nick Klein, stumbled in his UFC debut. However, at UFC on ESPN 71, Pulyaev returned to the win column with an impressive TKO stoppage of Klein (6-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) at 1:31 of Round 2 in the middleweight preliminary bout. It wasn't smooth sailing to start for Pulyaev. In fact, Klein won the opening round on all three judges' cards behind an aggressive grappling approach. After the break between rounds, Pulyaev found space to let his strikes fly, and put together a finishing sequence started with a hard kick to the body. Check out video of the finish below (via X): The 27-year-old Pulyaev dropped a unanimous decision against Christian Leroy Duncan in his March debut, which snapped a five-fight winning streak that included his DWCS win over Liam Anderson last August.
