Countdown to Kickoff: Jack Endries

Countdown to Kickoff: Jack Endries

USA Today7 days ago
Endries brings reliability and experience to a Texas TE room that needs it. He also brings athletic upside that could be massive for the Texas pass game early and often this season.
This is the addition that gets the Texas fans as excited as any this offseason. Gunnar Helm was a really important piece to the Texas offense a year ago and replacing him with Jack Endries keeps that incredible ability at the TE position. Endries is coming off a year where he was the leading receiver on the Cal Golden Bears. He came over the spring portal window and filled a rather big hole at the TE position.
2024 Stats: 56 catches, 623 yards(11.1 yards/catch), 2 TDs
Endries is a player that really resembles Gunnar Helm in his play style and ability. He does most of his damage over the middle of the field, something that Sarkisian loves to use with his TEs. He also is a plus blocker in pass pro and in the run game. He can be a true chess piece in this Texas offense, but the upside is incredible.
His athletic ability jumps off the page immediately, and it seems that is showing itself throughout the early parts of camp. He comes into a room where he will be the TE1 without question and will be given opportunity after opportunity in this offense, going into a year where he could make plenty of NFL money. Given Sarkisian's track record with TEs, it's likely Endries will have his best year yet this year.
The versatility that Endries can bring to the offense might be even greater than what Helm gave Texas a year ago. He has great hands, can line up just about anywhere and can make plays after the catch. That was a true strength of Gunnar Helm's game, and I think Longhorn fans will see plenty more of that this year. The question is his deep route ability, but it seems much of that is more Cal's offense than anything else. He will get his changes for those seam shots Helm got last year.
He opens the year with the second best odds to win the John Mackey Award, in a year where the TE position is incredibly talented. Eli Stowers, RJ Maryland, Max Klare and more will have a footprint on this season, but Endries could very well be the most productive of the bunch.
The biggest part of his role this season is the leadership he will provide to a talented, but young room. Jordan Washington, Spencer Shannon, Nick Townsend and more will factor in, but getting guidance from a more experienced player will be huge for their development. It also gives Texas some flexibility at the position, knowing they have a reliable option in their back pocket at all times.
Endries and Mosley were the two pass catchers Texas went out and got in the portal and I think they are both perfect fits. They both should be guys that can make big time plays consistently for the Longhorns, including in Week 1 vs. Ohio State. Continuing with the countdown tomorrow, I will jump into the freshman pass catching options for the Horns. Daylan McCutcheon, Michael Terry III and more will be factors for Texas this year, so let's break them down tomorrow.

Could Kevin Durant's contract extension with Rockets be for considerably less than max?

Kevin Durant in Houston feels like a hand-in-glove fit. The Rockets wanted Durant, and Houston was on his short list of places he wanted to be traded. When asked about the organization, Durant praised the Rockets. He fills the need for a half-court scoring threat that will open up their offense. The only question is the money on Durant's contract extension. Durant is in the final year of his current contract at $57.4 million. The Rockets can offer him a max two-year, $122.1 million extension (no team can offer Durant more than two years because of the over 38 rule). There was always an expectation that Durant would take a bit of a haircut off that max number, but that cut may be deeper than just a haircut, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon and Brian Windhorst on the Hoop Collective podcast (hat tip Hoopshype). MacMahon: "By all appearances and by what I've heard, they're not going all in on an extension for Kevin Durant. Now, doesn't mean it won't happen, but there've been rumblings of KD not going to push for the full max. I don't know that the Rockets are going to put anything on the table that's close to the max." Windhorst: "I think the Rockets are like it's not ideal, but I don't think they would panic if they go into the season with Kevin Durant just on the contract that he's on just on the on the expiring deal... I'll say this, Rafael Stone, since he's been the GM of the of the Rockets, he's signed quite a few giant contracts, but a lot most of them have been short." The contract has to be short in this case, but what is a fair number for the future Hall of Famer? One source who spoke to NBC Sports during Summer League suggested KD might dip to about the $100 million mark for two years, around $10 million a season below the max but still $50 million a season. However, maybe that number is too high. Maybe Durant will take less — he has the right to make whatever choice he thinks is best for him, his legacy and his family. Maybe everyone is comfortable going into the season without an extension and seeing how things play out. That said, we are more than a month out from the start of training camps, and a lot of deals get done right around the beginning of camp. This is all just something to watch.

Two-way star Hunter makes solid Jaguars debut

Results do not mean too much, but NFL pre-season games do offer the first set of clues about what will happen in the new season. The league's major stars will not play too often in the opening build-up games, but some top rookies have already made good first impressions as competition for starting places hots up. Most of the big talking points revolve around the quarterbacks, but there is also the NFL's 'unicorn' and a new Patrick Mahomes bodyguard worth discussing. Sanders impresses NBA legend James on Browns debut McNamee makes Packers debut a day after US arrival Two-way Travis makes Jaguars debut Travis Hunter signalled his intention to play both offence and defence as he made his debut working as a receiver and cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The second overall pick of this year's NFL Draft admitted he "was a little nervous at first" as he started one of the most high-profile debut seasons in the league. Hunter had two catches for nine yards in his 10 plays as a receiver before switching and playing eight snaps on defence. Jaguars head coach Liam Coen labelled it a "solid" start and plans to give Hunter more defensive work next week - with the team intent on deploying their talented rookie on both sides of the ball. Talking point - can Sanders earn starting spot? Shedeur Sanders made an eye-catching debut for the Cleveland Browns that raised suggestions he has a chance to be the team's starting quarterback this season. It would be quite the turnaround after his high-profile draft slide down to 144th overall - but beyond the hype he still faces an uphill battle, with veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett ahead of him along with another rookie in Dillon Gabriel. Cleveland did not field their starters against the Carolina Panthers and Sanders has not had any practice time with the first team - only getting a start on Friday because of injuries to Pickett and Gabriel. But he made the most of his opportunity and despite head coach Kevin Stefanski insisting he was "in evaluation mode" and "not diving into a quarterback competition", Sanders has given him a selection headache. Unique Hunter & divisive Sanders made NFL Draft so intriguing Have Chiefs found the man to protect Mahomes? Patrick Mahomes threw just one pass for one yard in his first outing since being on the losing side in the Super Bowl - but it was for a touchdown in his brief 48-second seasonal debut. So, of more interest was the impressive debut of rookie left tackle Josh Simmons. He is the man the Kansas City Chiefs hope can solve the problem they had all last season - protecting their star quarterback. The Chiefs used four left tackles last year but their issue keeping Mahomes upright ultimately cost them a Super Bowl three-peat as he was sacked six times and manhandled by the Philadelphia Eagles. Simmons showed enough in his first 11 snaps to suggest he could be the answer to their problems. Rookie quarterback watch - Dart on target for Giants Jaxson Dart may just be Russell Wilson's back-up but his impressive debut has excited New York Giants fans singing his praises. He threw for 154 yards and a touchdown and ran for 28 yards in a poised and balanced outing - against some Buffalo Bills starters - that probably just topped Sanders for the best performance by a rookie quarterback. Number one overall pick Cam Ward played just two series for the Tennessee Titans but his second was an 11-play touchdown drive where he showed promising chemistry with top receiver Calvin Ridley. Second-round pick Tyler Shough replaced Spencer Rattler in the second half of the New Orleans Saints' 27-13 defeat by the Los Angeles Chargers and had a 54-yard touchdown pass and a 'pick six' in an up-and-down display. Although not technically a rookie, JJ McCarthy will play his first season with the Minnesota Vikings after a knee injury cost him the entire campaign last year. McCarthy had a tear in his eye before his first game in 364 days, where he led one solid 13-play drive in what could be his only action before the NFL season opener. A comedy of errors for the Cowboys A messy first Dallas Cowboys game for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer culminated with even Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb getting a flag - despite not even being on the field. Lamb was on the sidelines for the defeat against the Los Angeles Rams but strayed almost onto the field and was hit by an official racing down the touchline. That led to Lamb not only taking a big hit but also Dallas getting one of 11 flags in the game, which cost them 83 yards and angered the new man in charge. "I hope the guy's OK. But we have to be better than that," Schottenheimer said. "CeeDee knows better. We know better." Dallas, who have star defender Micah Parsons watching on despite requesting a trade away from the team, will hope that comedy of errors is not a sign of things to come this season. Quinn Ewers' Performance Sunday Has Fans Worried About Arch Manning

Quinn Ewers' Performance Sunday Has Fans Worried About Arch Manning originally appeared on The Spun. Arch Manning didn't play on Sunday - the 2025 college football season is a couple of weeks away - but fans are concerned about him. Quinn Ewers did play on Sunday. The former Texas Longhorns quarterback, who beat out Arch Manning for the QB1 job in back-to-back seasons, got some playing time in the Miami Dolphins vs. Chicago Bears game. It did not go very well. The former Texas Longhorns quarterback completed 5 of 18 passes for 91 yards. He got sacked twice and fumbled twice. Reviews from his performance are not very flattering. Meanwhile, on social media, fans are worried about what this could mean for Arch Manning's 2025 season under center in Texas. Following Quinn Ewers' rough performance, fans took to social media, wondering about what this could mean for Arch Manning's 2025 season. If Ewers looked this bad, how good could Arch Manning actually be? That's the main argument. "Just a reminder that Arch Manning couldn't beat out this guy Quinn Ewers in 2 full seasons," one fan wrote. "Arch Manning? The guy who couldn't beat out Quinn Ewers?" one fan added. "Arch couldn't unseat him tho 😤," another fan wrote in response to Ewers' final stats from Sunday's game. "What we learned today is we have our tank commander for Arch Manning in 2026. Once we clean house and cut the tickle, we already have our guy on the roster to lead us into the future," another Dolphins fan joked. Ewers did lead Texas to the College Football Playoff semifinals last year, so it's not like he was a bad college quarterback. And Arch Manning was a true freshman and then redshirt freshman. It's possible - likely, even - that he's much better now than he was heading into the 2024 and 2023 seasons. Still, it's interesting that some fans are having this reaction to Quinn Ewers' performance on Sunday.
