Foo Fighters mark 30th anniversary with new single

The Advertiser03-07-2025
Foo Fighters have released a new single to mark the band's 30th anniversary.
Frontman Dave Grohl has taken to the band's official website to share details of Today's Song, their new single, and to reflect on the Foo Fighters' evolution over the years.
The 56-year-old star - who founded the rock band after previously starring in Nirvana - wrote: "This band began almost as an excuse. A reason to hang instruments around our necks and smoke cigarettes with the windows rolled up while listening to our favourite cassettes as we barrelled down the interstate towards the next dark, sticky stage.
"We'd all been in the game for a while by then, mind you. We'd all played in other bands, with other people, some that ended much too soon. But we were far from finished. This was a mischievous and maybe necessary detour from maturity, reminding all four of us that our little brains were still wired like an overloaded extension cord, sparking from too many light strands on the Christmas tree. A childish refusal of adulthood, white knuckling the last grasps of adolescence ...
"But, before long it became clear that we were on to something more than just escape. Not necessarily in the musical sense. More of a 'life' thing. This was a new beginning. A change. And it felt right. We had stumbled upon a shiny new toy that came without instructions and with much assembly required. So, we began to build it ever so carefully, piece by piece."
Grohl also paid a glowing tribute to Taylor Hawkins, who joined the Foo Fighters in 1997, and remained the band's drummer until his death aged 50 in 2022.
Dave - who recorded the band's eponymous debut album in 1995 - wrote: "Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivalled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination."

TAINTED: burlesque show merges Victorian-era tales with 90s grunge sound

A Victorian-style tragedy full of magic, slapstick, pole dance, burlesque and fire dance, all set to a 90s grunge soundtrack is coming to Sun Street Studios. Sophie Cook and the Wollombi Burlesque Troupe are bringing TAINTED - A Burlesque Tragic Opera to Maitland for one night only on Friday, August 29. Inspired by Victorian stories and English films, TAINTED covers everything from plague and pestilence to age and love, with live 90s grunge music from the likes of Nirvana and Soundgarden. Sophie, who wrote and produced the show, and plays vaudevillian Legs 11.11, said it's is very comedic but also has depth. Going through menopause has impacted Sophie's life and the way she has written the show. "There's just so many different things that I'm taking on from writing to producing, to performing, and it does seem a lot harder now that I'm in this menopause," she said. "It is something that we all go through and even though it's not very sexy, it's a big shift in your life and I'm trying to come to terms with that it's a really empowering time, I've heard women say that they do their very best work when they sort of push into this new phase." Sophie said this has led her to embracing playing more of a matriarchal role in this show, rather than the siren she's known for. "I'm also just doing those gross things on stage that I probably wouldn't have done when I was 25, and I'm still ballsy enough to take off some layers of clothing, but I guess in this particular act... she is celebrating her body but she's also looking in the mirror and is kind of not happy with her body," she said. "I'm trying to bring in the humour that everybody feels as they get older, whereas if I was 25 I wouldn't even be considering putting a thread like that in my own work." TAINTED will be Sophie's fifth show in Maitland, and she said while it's a huge undertaking, she doesn't know what she'd do without the shows and the creative process. "It's going to be a really fun night out and the band is amazing, they've got some really incredible performers so it's something different," she said. "I don't think you [usually] get a chance to listen to much grunge music, unless you're looking for it." Celebs at Wimbledon: Dave Grohl, Olivia Rodrigo headline A-listers in crowds

Dave Grohl led the A-list celebrities braving the rain on day three of Wimbledon. The Foo Fighters frontman, 56, looked the part in his glistening suit as he walked through the All England Club gates alongside wife Jordyn Blum. Last year, the rock star admitted to fathering a love-child with another woman as he was accused of having 'a 15-year affair with a porn goddess'. But he and wife Jordyn were all smiles as they made their way to Centre Court for the day's action. And it was case of music greats past and present in attendance as play on the outside courts was delayed by the bad weather. That is because Olivia Rodrigo was also invited to the tennis as a guest of the club, just three days after headlining the final night of Glastonbury, while Sir Cliff Richard was back once more. And there was plenty of stars from the sporting world, too. Current England manager Thomas Tuchel headed to SW19 for the first time since taking on the job from Sir Gareth Southgate - who was at Wimbledon on Monday. Another of Tuchel's Three Lions predecessors, Roy Hodgson, also headed to South-West London on Wednesday alongside wife Sheila. Graeme Le Saux earned 36 England caps - plus a fair few more in Soccer Aid. He also boasts membership at the All England Club and proudly wore his badge upon arrival this morning. Diver Tom Daley — used to the water — proved he is just as capable at turning out a fashionable number as he is at twisting and turning into the pool. Golfer Tommy Fleetwood opted for a shimmering grey suit and tie paired with grey loafers. Actor Dominic Cooper defied his 47 years by dazzling in a brilliant sky-blue suit. And wrestler John Cena could be seen after all as he arrived with wife Shay Shariatzadeh. Despite the wet weather in Wimbledon, the celebs can expect another bumper day from their seats in the Royal Box on Centre Court. The day's order of play started with world No1 Aryna Sabalenka vs Marie Bouzkova followed by Brit student Ollie Tarvet against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. And the third match on Centre saw two Grand Slam champions pitted against each other in round two as 2021 US Open queen Emma Raducanu faced 2023 Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova. The Sun BECKHAM, BLANCHETT, REBEL WILSON LEAD STARS AT WIMBLEDON ON DAY ONE David Beckham made a mad 4,000-mile dash back from the Club World Cup to join the celebrities on the first day of Wimbledon. The former England captain watched his Inter Miami side get dumped out of the tournament by his former employers PSG on Sunday night. The 4-0 victory for PSG kicked off at 5pm local time at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia – or 10pm UK time. But despite the match finishing just 13-and-a-half hours before play got underway on Centre Court, Beckham hot-footed it across the Atlantic to be joined by his mum Sandra. And he even posed for a selfie 12 hours after full-time in Atlanta with Wimbledon 2004 champion Maria Sharapova, who was one of the first big-name arrivals. The Russian has been a regular at the All England Club since her retirement and once again made the most of her membership to watch the tennis. So before things got underway on the court, Sharapova and a suited-and-booted Beckham posed for a brilliant selfie for their combined 92million followers. Sharapova – decked out in a denim skirt and navy polo in the record-breaking sweltering heat – wrote: 'Let the (Wimbledon) games begin.' It has been a busy few days for Becks – set to get a knighthood – who underwent secret surgery on his wrist. He wore a sling and had heavy strapping on the joint at the Club World Cup last night. But he had no sling when he took his seat in the Royal Box for the start of Carlos Alcaraz vs Fabio Fognini – but had swapped his dark suit for a cream one. Beckham sat next to former England boss Sir Gareth Southgate – fresh from his knighthood – was also among the VIPs taking in the Day One action. And it was not just footballers in the house. Former cricket star Stuart Broad was in attendance with partner and ex-The Saturdays singer Mollie King. Actors Eddie Redmayne and Jason Isaacs plus singers Cliff Richard and Ronan Keating were in the Royal Box, too. Sam Thompson of Made In Chelsea and I'm A Celebrity fame also made the short journey from West London to South-West London. Oliver Proudlock and Emma Louise Connolly, Laura Whitmore, Isla Fisher and Rochelle and Marvin Humes were also among first-day attendees. – The Sun Read related topics: Wimbledon Tennis Nick Kyrgios has slammed a move from Jannik Sinner to reunite with the fitness coach he sacked in 2024 after it was revealed that the Italian had tested positive for doping. Soundside Music Festival cancelled

Soundside Music Festival has been cancelled. The two-day event – which was set to take place at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut on September 27 and 28 with headliners The Killers, Weezer, Hozier and Vampire Weekend – has been axed, according to a brief message on its website. The message states: 'Due to circumstances beyond our control, Soundside Music Festival has been cancelled. Tickets will be refunded to the original method of payment in as little as 30 days depending on your bank's processing time.' No other information was given and there were no details on the reason for cancellation. Djo, Japanese Breakfast, the Backseat Lovers, Remi Wolf, Alex Warren and the Last Dinner Party were also on the line-up. This comes one year after Foo Fighters cancelled their planned performance at the festival in 2024 with only a few days notice, after Dave Grohl revealed he had welcomed a baby outside of his marriage. In a statement posted on Instagram, the band said: "FOO FIGHTERS WILL NO LONGER BE APPEARING AT THIS WEEKEND'S SOUNDSIDE MUSIC FESTIVAL. PLEASE CHECK THE FESTIVAL WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION (sic)" The Foo Fighters didn't cite a specific reason for cancelling their planned appearance at the festival. However, it came just weeks after Dave confirmed that he had fathered a child outside of his marriage. The 56-year-old musician vowed to "regain" the trust of his family after sharing the news via social media. Dave - who has been married to Jordyn Blum since 2003 - wrote on Instagram at the time: "I've recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage. I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We're grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together."
