I had to fend off Celtic glove rivals by getting politicians on board and Kasper Schmeichel might have a similar scrap
Hoops legend Packie Bonner spent almost 20 year as no.1 at Parkhead and knows what it takes to remain the main man
Packie Bonner had such a fierce scrap on his hands to keep hold of the Celtic no.1 shirt he called up MPs for hauners.
And the Hoops hero reckons Kasper Schmeichel might have a similar fight to stop Viljami Sinisalo snatching the jersey next season.
Bonner knows what it's like to be the main man at Parkhead and have others determined to take your place.
The Irish legend saw off plenty in nearly two decades at the club and the sight of Shay Given back in town last week brought back memories of a particularly tough time.
Bonner had Gordon Marshall and Stuart Kerr as competition in the mid-90s – but there was also Given coming up the ranks and future USA star Brad Friedel on the books.
Those two would depart the club and go on to make more than 1000 English Premier League appearances between them – and hoover up more than 200 international caps.
Bonner said: 'That's some list of goalkeepers. I was thinking, get rid of him, get rid of him, don't give him a chance!
'Brad couldn't get his work permit. I was talking to the politicians, saying don't give him one! You've got to fend them off!'
Schmeichel is in the same boat now with Sinisalo pushing hard and Ross Doohan set to return to the club from Aberdeen.
The big Dane enjoyed a superb first season in Scotland but suffered a disappointing end with a blunder in the Scottish Cup Final.
Sinisalo impressed when he got the chance when Schmeichel was out injured and made no bones about the fact he wants to be the one handed the gloves as soon as possible.
Bonner said: 'I loved that. I remember when my first contract was up and I went in to see big Billy. He was doing his hair in front of the mirror and I asked what was happening.
'He said, 'Oh, we've just taken up the option on your contract.'
'I didn't even know I signed that! I just said I wanted to be in the team, and he just kept doing his hair, and he didn't even look at me.
'But that resonates with the manager. I want to be the No.1. There are lots of people who want to be number two or three now because they're getting 15 grand a week, and they don't have to do anything.
'But if you want to be no.1 that's the profile you want. Who will be no.1? That's a good question. I thought Sinisalo did really well.
'We didn't know much about him. Every time I watched him in the warm-ups, he looked okay – but that's the warm-ups!
'Listen, I think he's got the profile. When you play with Celtic, or Rangers for that matter, you can do all the right things and it looks great and so on, but you have to make the big saves under pressure.
'It's sometimes not the repeated saves, it's the one when you have to pull it out when you're not maybe getting a lot to do. That's what keeps you in tournaments. That's what wins you games.
'With Sinisalo, we are wondering whether he can come up with that. That's what the likes of Joe Hart and Schmeichel have shown.
"Forget the cup final, that was a one-off. It'll happen to everybody.
'But they have come up with the big saves at the right time. Andy Gorham did it for years, Jim Leighton did it for years. Peter Latchford did it for years. We make mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes.'
Bonner suspects Schmeichel will still get the nod but he's convinced the Denmark legend won't make a fuss if he is eventually usurped.
He said: 'Kasper doesn't have to worry. He won't worry. At the end of the day, he'll either play or not. Even if he doesn't play, he's going to be very happy to be here.
'I was talking to his dad, had a good chat with his dad on the plane going out and coming back, and he was talking about how Kasper's really enjoying his time here at Celtic, and it's a breath of fresh air for him.
'He's won things, and he's in a team that's in Europe. It's a fantastic place to come for a goalkeeper of that nature.
'He's 38 years old, he knows he's in his last couple of years, and if he isn't no.1, he's going to be their support, and he's not going to throw the toys out of the pram. But it's important that Sinisalo wants that position.
'Goalkeepers are very different. We work together, we room together, even though we were fighting for the position.
'But you were never hostile to the person. You were good friends, and you got on, but you were challenging each other.
'That's different, maybe, than outfield players. It was the same with myself and Peter Latchford. He had a grasp of it. Yeah. And listen, Peter was great for me.
'Gerry Peyton was great for me with the Irish team. Maybe they knew they weren't going to get in!'
Pat Bonner was launching the Refugee World Cup Scotland 2025 tournament at Toryglen Regional Football Centre on June 29. The event celebrated the diversity of communities in Scotland through football while standing up for the rights of refugees.

Royal Ascot 2025: Aidan O'Brien's net worth, 'nowhere near' criticism and superstar sons
Royal Ascot 2025: Aidan O'Brien's net worth, 'nowhere near' criticism and superstar sons Since claiming his first classic victory in 1997, Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has established himself among the elite of flat racing, and he approaches Royal Ascot with a formidable team yet again Aidan O'Brien has often enjoyed his visits to Royal Ascot (Image: Getty Images ) Ballydoyle's maestro Aidan O'Brien is eyeing a triple-figure tally as he returns to his favoured stomping ground of Royal Ascot. The esteemed Irish trainer has won everything there is to win in flat racing, earning him global recognition, and it's at the five-day Royal meeting where he often shines brightest. O'Brien has an impressive 91 Royal Ascot victories under his belt to date, and with a current stable bursting with talent, reaching the hundred mark seems all but guaranteed. In 2025, he holds strong prospects for many of the renewal's Group 1 events, despite the fact that Gold Cup holder Kyprios and Coronation Stakes hopeful Lake Victoria will be absent from the meet, with the former now retired. Nonetheless, many of O'Brien's contenders are still expected to triumph throughout the week, as we delve into the trainer's net worth, remarkable sons and his sharp critique of the Ascot turf. What is Aidan O'Brien's net worth? With over 400 Group 1 winners worldwide, O'Brien has raked in millions for his associates at Ballydoyle and Coolmore, amassing a substantial personal fortune in the process. He also made his mark as a legendary trainer in the National Hunt sphere, most notably with star hurdler Istabraq, a three-time Cheltenham Champion Hurdle victor. Article continues below O'Brien has won countless Group 1 affairs (Image: Getty Images ) It's estimated that O'Brien's net worth stands at around £34million after his years at the pinnacle of the sport, a figure likely to increase should he enjoy further success at Ascot. In 2024, O'Brien was crowned British Champion Flat Trainer for an astonishing seventh time. With his colt Lambourn already securing an 11th Derby victory this year, he seems well-positioned to retain the title. Who are Aidan O'Brien's sons? O'Brien has not only built a legendary legacy at Ballydoyle but also fathered a new generation of talent in the horse racing world. His eldest son, Joseph, born in 1993, is one of four children he shares with his wife Anne-Marie, alongside Sarah, Anastasia and Donnacha. Each of O'Brien's children has ridden to victory for him as a jockey at some point. However, it was Joseph who garnered significant praise, winning the 2012 Derby on Camelot. After being named Irish Champion Jockey in 2012 and again in 2013, Joseph retired from riding three years later to focus on training. Both Joseph and Donnacha are now trainers (Image: Getty Images ) His younger brother, Donnacha, rode some winners for Joseph, who has since celebrated notable victories both over jumps and on the flat, including King George Chase winner Banbridge and Irish Derby champion Latrobe. Donnacha has also transitioned into training after ending his riding career, achieving his first Royal Ascot win in 2023 with star filly Porta Fortuna, who also claimed the Coronation Stakes a year prior. Both of O'Brien's sons will be sending their horses to the Royal meeting this year, hoping to outshine their illustrious father. What did Aidan O'Brien say about the ground at Ascot? O'Brien's outings to Ascot haven't always been smooth. In 2024, the celebrated colt Auguste Rodin, victor of the 2023 Derby and the Breeders' Cup Turf, came to the course eyeing the prestigious Group 1 King George. Ryan Moore, Ballydoyle's first-choice jockey, was in the saddle of the four-year-old, who was the favourite for the second consecutive year, but O'Brien's charge was once more outpaced, ending up fifth, a significant 11-and-a-half lengths adrift of the victor Goliath. Auguste Rodin failed to win the King George in 2024 (Image: Getty Images ) Following the £700,000 race, the progeny of Deep Impact's trainer didn't mince words about the condition of the Ascot track, asserting that the declared good to firm going was inaccurate. Article continues below "When we walked the track, we were very worried," O'Brien remarked. "It was good, good to soft in places. It was nowhere near good to firm anywhere. It was cut up on the rails and full of sand. "We knew we had no choice, and we had to go down there. With the benefit of hindsight, we should have kept out of the bad ground and on the quicker ground. That's the way it is, and that's the way it fell for us today. There will be other days."

Scott McTominay could have a new centre-forward to work alongside at Napoli next season after the Serie A champions 'entered talks' over an eye-popping move for an English Premier League striker. The Italian champions celebrated their memorable title win last month by confirming the free transfer arrival of Manchester City and Belgium icon Kevin De Bruyne last week, and now Antonio Conte's side are stepping up their summer recruitment by targeting the arrival of a new goal scorer at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad With guaranteed entry into the League Phase of next season's UEFA Champions League, Conte is looking to build a squad that can mount a serious challenge across all competitions, and is hoping to provide competition for main striker Romelu Lukaku ahead of the 2025/26 season. Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour may have a new teammate at Napoli. | Getty Images Following the arrival of Scotland duo McTominay and Billy Gilmour last summer, Napoli have also been linked with a third Scottish international in the shape of Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson. However, the Gli Azzurri are believed to want to bolster their forward line first, and have entered talks with Liverpool over the signing of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez. As per a new report from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Nunez has been told he can leave Anfield this summer following an inconsistent three season stay on Merseyside, with his exit from the club 'guaranteed'. Writing on his official X account, Romano wrote: 'Nunez remains guaranteed exit at Liverpool this summer. Understand Napoli have made contact in the recent days. Discussions between Napoli and Darwin Nunez continue as he's high on the shortlist. Talks ongoing with player's camp scheduled also this week. Nunez has also proposals from Saudi Pro League and more European clubs.' The striker was signed by former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2021, arriving from Portuguese giants Benfica for a mammoth fee of £64million, but has struggled to nail down a first team spot at Anfield since his arrival. He fell behind Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo in the starting XI last year, and is not believed to be part of Arne Slot's plans for next season, with the Dutch boss ready to spend big following last year's English Premier League title success.
