Motherwell keeper wants to keep fans happy with cup progress
Calum Ward hopes Motherwell can put a smile on fans' faces by knocking St Johnstone out of the Premier Sports Cup.
Motherwell will head to McDiarmid Park in Perth as favourites in the last-16 clash, but Ward is conscious that they haven't won a league game yet.
However, the English keeper is confident that the Steelmen will progress in the competition, kick-starting their campaign.
He said: 'St Johnstone have started the season really strongly, six points out of six.
'They'll probably do really well in that league. We know it's going to be a tough place, but we're confident in ourselves that we can go and play the football we do and try and beat them next week.
'You really want to do really well in the Cups. It's another good chance to keep the fans happy. Going on a cup run is really important for the club and we'll try and do our best next week.'
Ward, 24, was called into action to save from Alex Gogic as Motherwell battled out a 0-0 draw with St Mirren in Paisley on Saturday, while at the other end, Shamal George saved smartly from Ibrahim Said and Callum Slattery.
The Essex-born shot-stopper said: 'Possibly it was a fair result, but I feel like we could have taken all three.
'We played some really good stuff in the first half and some really good stuff in the second.
'We just lacked that cutting edge at the end. We always knew it was going to be tough coming here. We said at half-time, if we can't get the goal and get the win, we'll take the point.'
On his second-half save, Ward said: 'I had to judge that he's going to win that ball, and just drop off and then flicked it on and just did my job. It had to be a strong hand because I had to get it over the bar. I was happy with it.
'We knew that they put crosses in the box, corners, and they caused us problems in the first half and second, and then that ball was coming, it was windy, it was tough.'
Having drawn 1-1 at home to Rangers Motherwell have two points so far, but Ward is content with that, from difficult games.
He said: 'It's better than two losses, for sure. We obviously want to win games like everyone, but if we can't get the three points, we'll take the draw, especially at a place like this.
'Obviously we were confident in ourselves last week going into the game, but we obviously take the point.
'We could have won the game easily at the end. And chances we had, we just lacked that little bit of finishing touch.
'And if we had that, we would have clearly had six points out of six, but we'll take the two.'
Ward came through the youth set-up at AFC Bournemouth and was sent out on loan for a few spells before landing permanently at HIFK in Finland, and from there he moved to AC Oulu, and Motherwell.
Having signed a contract extension at the start of this season, Ward is happy in Lanarkshire.
He said: 'I got the chance to start the season, play a few pre-season games to get used to how the manager wants me to play and the team to play.
'So I'm happy with how we've played so far, yeah.
'It wasn't the greatest start getting lobbed in the Premier Sports Cup [against Clyde], but then we just worked on it. We played well in the game. We just implemented that style of play that we want to do.
'It has been good. I've enjoyed taking my chance and just trying to continue to do that.
'In the first half and a lot of the game last week, it looks really good when it works. Obviously, we're going to make mistakes but the manager said that to us and we're getting that on board.
'We know that mistakes will happen, but we'll keep doing the right things and keep being brave. When it is successful, it looks really good.'

He was then shipped out to Portuguese side Arouca on loan before a permanent switch to Beitar Jerusalem followed in the summer of 2023. The Bairns are looking to strengthen their midfield, with just one new addition in that area this summer in the form of Leicester City youngster Henry Cartwright on a season-long loan. They've also brought in former Hoops goalkeeper Scott Bain, Lewis Neilson on loan from Hearts and veteran striker Brian Graham from Partick Thistle. McGlynn has previously said he is looking to bring in two or three more players before the end of the window, but needs to wait to see what bigger clubs do down south before Falkirk can make their move. But the Daily Record is reporting that the Bairns' boss is offering the 27-year-old Soro a trial to see if he can win a deal at the Falkirk Stadium. Falkirk are in the top flight for the first time in 15 years after back to back title wins in League One and the Scottish Championship. They enjoyed an highly impressive unbeaten season in League One, before securing the Championship title on the last day of last season against Hamilton Accies. This season they topped their Premier Sports Cup group before beginning their league campaign with a 2-2 draw at home to Dundee United. They then fell to a 3-1 defeat away to fellow new boys Livingston last weekend. Falkirk fans invade the pitch as promotion to the Premiership is confirmed Falkirk next go to Celtic in the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup on Friday, before welcoming Hibs to the Falkirk Stadium the following Saturday. After that it's a trip to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen before the international break. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Martin explains Rangers recall for Tavernier and Raskin
The pair were previously dropped after the team's draw with Motherwell but made impacts off the bench against Viktoria Plzen and Dundee. Their performances have earned them starting positions for the second leg against the Czech side. Max Aarons' injury has also played a part in Tavernier's recall. The Bournemouth loanee picked up a knock and will be absent for the match but is expected to be fit to face Alloa Athletic on Saturday. Martin explained his selection choices to BBC Scotland, saying: "I think that is the right team to play tonight to win the game. "Nico was fantastic when he came on Saturday, as was Tav, had a big moment for us and executed it." He further explained Aarons' situation, saying: "Max picked up a little bit of a knock before the game on Saturday and got through it as best as he could, but it's actually set him back a little bit. "So he'll be fit for the weekend, but there was no point in bringing him to travel and he's now got a bit of time to recover now. Read more: "So Tav and Nico really helped the team on Saturday and they're in tonight." The manager also spoke about Joe Rothwell, who has been left out of the squad after starting alongside Raskin in recent games. Martin said: "He's come in, he's done great. "He's looked a bit tired on Saturday and we've just gone for energy. "So we have two really good options there. "They might end up on the pitch together at some point tonight."

Swansea City closing in on sensational move for highly-rated Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder The midfielder looks set to become Swansea's latest signing of the summer Malick Yalcouye was on loan at SK Sturm Graz last season and now looks set to join Swansea City (Image: Getty Images) Swansea City are on the brink of completing a loan move for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Malick Yalcouye. WalesOnline understands an agreement has been reached to take the 19-year-old on loan for the upcoming season, with the player set to undergo a medical set to take place on Wednesday. The Ivorian is in attendance to watch his new side take on League Two side Crawley Town on Tuesday night, with the club hoping to have his international clearance through before Saturday's clash at home to Sheffield United. Yalcouye, who can play either out wide or as a number eight, is seen as one of the most exciting youngsters on Brighton's books right now, and there had previously been suggestions he might in the first team picture this season. But despite some impressive performances for Albion in pre-season, another loan spell has been viewed as the best next step in his development. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here. Toulouse and FC Copenhagen had previously been credited with an interest in recent weeks, but Swansea appear to have won the race for his signature. Article continues below The midfielder spent last season on loan at Austrian champions Sturm Graz, and even played eight times in their Champions League campaign, a run that also saw him named Player of the Match against Borussia Dortmund. He signed a five-year deal with the Seagulls last summer, and there's a growing feeling on the English south coast that he has the skillset to one day shine in the Premier League following a meteoric rise. Eligible to represent Ivory Coast and Mali, he signed for Albion after making just 14 outings for previous club IFK Goteburg having previously come through the ranks of Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas, where the likes of Emmanuel Eboue, Gervinho and the Toure brothers all began their careers. His time in Sweden even saw him compared to Ngolo Kante by some onlookers. Yalcouye made 36 appearances in all competitions last term, netting four goals and earning two assists as Graz won the Austrian Bundesliga title, and his capture will come as a huge boost to Alan Sheehan as he bids to add further depth to his squad. He's poised to become Swansea's eighth signing of the summer, with Bobby Wales, Zeidane Inoussa, Ricardo Santos, Cameron Burgess, Ethan Galbraith and Paul Farman all joining on permanent deals. Article continues below West Ham United youngster Kaelan Casey has also come on board, after arriving on a season-long loan. Meanwhile, the club remain keen on adding more firepower to their ranks before the close of the window, having cooled their interest in QPR-bound Richard Kone. Jusef Erabi is another name to have been considered recently, while reports in France have linked the Swans with Schalke's Moussa Sylla.
