Why 49ers top draft pick has already impressed his new coach
San Francisco used all five of its first 2025 NFL draft picks on the defensive side of the football, including its first-round selection at No. 11 overall on Georgia defensive lineman Mykel Williams.
Williams tallied 67 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, three passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery across 40 games in three seasons with the Bulldogs. The 6-foot-5, 267-pound defensive end started 17 games during his Georgia career.
Now, Williams is tasked with fortifying the 49ers' defensive edge and its pass rush. On Thursday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked if Williams is pretty well advanced for a rookie.
"Yeah, I would say so. Just watching the style of how he played in college, he's just technical and stuff. I thought that jumped out on his tape the most, how good he is with his hands. A lot of pass rushers coming out of college who are talented like him and just use their talent, but he's as good with his hands as anyone I've seen coming out. And it's transferred over to practice too," Shanahan said.
San Francisco is getting a good early look at Williams with some of its one-on-one pass rushing drills. Shanahan shared what the staff can glean from its one-one-one pass rushing drills during training camp.
"The same as all one-on-ones, just it's able to isolate it. You can really see how a guy blocks with no help around him and you can really see how a guy's just teeing off and all he has to worry about is going to the quarterback.
"Then you get out there on 11-on-11 and there's a lot more scheme involved, there's a lot more other guys, knowing what play's happening and there's so much that goes into it. But you get a situation where you can just truly focus on blocking and rushing and that's the hardest time to do it for a blocker and the best time for a pass rusher. And same with one-on-ones for receivers/corners, should be the best time for a receiver and the toughest for a corner without a pass rush, but it truly can show what guys are capable of doing in their total level of talent," Shanahan said.
Williams has been impressing early during his time in San Francisco. The former Georgia Bulldog has garnered some first-team work opposite five-time Pro Bowler Nick Bosa.
Williams has already drawn praise from future Hall of Fame left tackle Trent Williams, which is another positive sign as his rookie season approaches.

Bears WR Rome Odunze makes bold claim about QB Caleb Williams
The hope and optimism around Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is extremely high coming into the 2025 season, and expectations are high even among teammates. With new head coach Ben Johnson leading the way this season, there is plenty of reason to believe that Williams will take a big leap in his growth and development, and wide receiver Rome Odunze believes Williams can develop into a star quarterback. Both Williams and Odunze were both first round picks for the Bears last season, and both are key pieces to the team's success for the foreseeable future, along with their new head coach. On Thursday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler appeared on "Get Up" and revealed a bold claim from Odunze: Williams can be the best quarterback in the NFL. "Rome Odunze told me that Caleb Williams can literally be the best quarterback in the NFL," Fowler said before giving his point of view of what he's seen with the Bears so far. "He's far away from that right now, Ben Johnson has been relentless on him with the details. They're just trying to get him to do the basics right now and then they'll work on the off-scripted plays, the mobility, all his strengths, that will come. Chicago Bears, elite quarterback play is an oxymoron. As far as the ability (of Williams), they see it, the players recognize it, they just have to get it out of him. They're treating him like a rookie right now." While Odunze has high hopes for Williams, it's clear that the Bears and the new coaching staff are going through a full rebuild of their young quarterback. Before Williams can approach best quarterback in the NFL territory, the Bears are just looking to get him to fix himself from a lost and disappointing rookie season, and the bad habits he may have picked up along the way. 7 free agents the Ravens could target after the preseason opener vs. the Colts
With the preseason opener completed, we're looking at seven free agents Baltimore could look to add to the roster with Week 1 looming. The Baltimore Ravens have one of the NFL's best rosters and a loaded offensive unit looking to expound on the record-setting performance from 2024. The Ravens weren't overly active during the first wave of NFL free agency, but they added DeAndre Hopkins to the passing game and Jake Hummel to the special teams. Baltimore retained Ronnie Stanley, Patrick Ricard, and Tylan Wallace, while the restructuring of Marlon Humphrey created $13 million in salary cap space. Even with the inactivity and loss of Brandon Stephens, Malik Harrison, Patrick Mekari, Josh Jones, and Chris Board, the team is still in the midst of a Super Bowl window. The team is set to begin preseason play and could look to add more talent to the roster in key positions. Douglas lacked big plays, with only five passes defended in 2024, but had at least 13 in each of the three previous seasons. The Sports Report: Chargers lose Rashawn Slater for the season
From Anthony De Leon: Rashawn Slater, the Chargers' star left tackle who became the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history last month, sustained a torn patellar tendon in practice and will undergo season-ending surgery, the team announced Thursday. Slater went down in team drills after going up against edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu. As Slater planted his left foot, he collapsed to the ground and immediately grabbed his leg. A quiet hush fell over the Chargers' facility while Slater stayed down for several minutes before trainers and teammates helped him onto a cart. Slater appeared visibly distraught — throwing his helmet, slamming his hand on the cart and burying his face in his hands. Several teammates walked over to console him before he left the field. Two trainers supported him as he entered the team facility. He was unable to put any weight on his left leg. Continue reading here From Gary Klein: Matthew Stafford will throw passes on Saturday. But not at SoFi Stadium, where the Rams will play the Dallas Cowboys in a preseason game. Coach Sean McVay said Thursday that the back issue that has sidelined Stafford since the start of training camp was related to an aggravated disc, and that Stafford recently received an epidural from spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins. Stafford will go through a workout at the Rams' Woodland Hill facility Saturday morning. Continue reading here AI can't be stopped! On the floor, with tempers simmering on the Sparks' bench, a delay-of-game whistle drew another round of jeers from the Arena crowd. The calls weren't the only sources of frustration for the Sparks — the team also was trailing the last-place Connecticut Sun by 10 points. Still, the flare-up might have been what the Sparks needed to rally to a 102-91 victory over the Sun to earn their eighth win in nine games. 'Since the beginning of the season, I've been optimistic about what this team would look like and why I want to be here and why I want to continue to be here,' Dearica Hamby said. A slew of players moved on to the NFL. No full-time starters return. Success will depend on several players with promising pedigrees but limited college production becoming playmakers. As he stepped off a team bus Wednesday afternoon in Costa Mesa amid the warmest day of training camp, the temperature reaching 82 degrees before warmup stretches, Key Lawrence did not appear to feel any sort of heat, literal or figurative. The transfer safety who has made previous college stops at Tennessee, Oklahoma and Mississippi was humming a tune, savoring every moment of this new opportunity. They will travel to Williamsport, Pa., where the World Series begins on Wednesday. Golden Hill's only two losses came from Honolulu, including a 1-0 loss to start the tournament. It was the first time in the league's 69-year history that a team had advanced to the West Region final. Pitcher Bronson Fermahin took advantage of his team scoring three runs in the first two innings by throwing lots of strikes. He had eight strikeouts through the first four innings and finished with 11 in 5 ⅔ innings before Golden Hill pushed across a run with two outs in the sixth.
