
Rocket Lab to acquire EO/IR payload developer Geost in $275m deal
The strategic acquisition would create an entirely new category for Rocket Lab, positioning the company as a disruptor for national security space.
Rocket Lab has announced a definitive agreement to acquire the parent company of Geost, an electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) payload developer based in Tucson, Arizona. The $275m deal will be executed through a combination of $125m in cash and $150m in privately placed Rocket Lab common stock, along with the possibility of an additional $50m in cash earnouts tied to future revenue milestones. The acquisition, expected to close in the second half of 2025, represents Rocket Labs formal expansion into the satellite payload sector and significantly strengthens its position as a full-spectrum provider of national security space solutions.
Geost, which has more than two decades of flight heritage supporting both classified and unclassified missions, specialises in advanced EO/IR sensor systems critical to missile warning and tracking, tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), Earth observation, and space domain awareness. These capabilities align with the US Department of Defenses push for resilient, proliferated space architectures such as the proposed Golden Dome and the Space Development Agencys Tracking Layer.
By bringing Geosts payload expertise in-house, Rocket Lab aims to streamline the production of integrated spacecraft systems specifically tailored for US national security applications. The move is expected to reduce integration complexity, cut costs, and speed up delivery timelines. With Geosts high-performance sensing solutions, Rocket Lab will be better equipped to support real-time threat detection and response, enabling warfighters and mission operators to operate more effectively in increasingly contested space environments.
The acquisition also introduces a new capability categoryOptical Systemsinto Rocket Labs growing portfolio and reinforces its role as a disruptor in the national security space market.

As part of the acquisition, Rocket Lab will assume ownership of Geosts facilities and labs in Tucson and northern Virginia, along with its intellectual property, existing inventory and workforce. The deal will add 115 highly skilled professionals to Rocket Labs team, bringing the companys total headcount to over 2,600. Rocket Labs global footprint now spans key locations across the United States, Canada, and New Zealand, reinforcing its commitment to delivering cutting-edge space technologies across a rapidly evolving aerospace landscape.

Trump says 'Golden Dome' free for Canada if it joins US
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Canada could join his proposed "Golden Dome" missile defense system for free — but only if it becomes part of the United States. Otherwise it would cost Canada $61 billion to be part of the system, said Trump, who has repeatedly called for the United States' northern neighbour to become the 51st state. Canada has expressed interest in joining the missile system -- plans for which Trump unveiled last week to defend against a wide array of enemy weapons -- but has firmly rejected any loss of sovereignty. "I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation," Trump posted on his Truth Social network. "But (it) will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!" There was no immediate response from Canada to Trump's claims. Trump announced plans for the "Golden Dome" system a week ago, saying it would eventually cost around $175 billion and would be operational by the end of his term in 2029. Experts say the scheme faces huge technical and political challenges, and could cost far more than he has estimated to achieve its goals. Trump also said at the time that Canada was interested in joining the missile system. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney then confirmed that his country had held "high level" talks on the issue. NATO members Canada and the United States are partners in continental defense through the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). But the scheme now seems set to add to the tensions that Trump has sparked with Canada. Carney politely but firmly dismissed Trump's calls for Canada to become part of the United States when he visited the White House earlier this month, saying his country was "never for sale." The Canadian premier and Trump did however appear to smooth over some of the strains over the tariffs that the US president has slapped on Ottawa.

Trump unveils plans for $175-billion 'Golden Dome' missile shield for US
US President Donald Trump unveiled new details on his plan for a "Golden Dome" missile shield system to protect the country against attacks, saying it should be operational in about three years. Trump announced $25 billion in initial funding for the plan, which he said could eventually cost a total of some $175 billion. "In the campaign I promised the American people I would build a cutting-edge missile defence shield," Trump said at the White House. "Today I am pleased to announce we have officially selected architecture for this state-of-the-art system." "Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world, and even if they are launched from space," Trump said. "This is very important for the success and even survival of our country." He said US Space Force General Michael Guetlein will lead the effort, and that Canada has expressed interest in being part of it as "they want to have protection also." While Trump put the total price at $175 billion, the Congressional Budget Office has estimated the cost of space-based interceptors to defeat a limited number of intercontinental ballistic missiles at between $161 billion and $542 billion over 20 years. Golden Dome has more expansive goals, with Trump saying it "will deploy next-generation technologies across the land, sea and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors." Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, speaking alongside Trump, said the system is aimed at protecting "the homeland from cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, drones, whether they're conventional or nuclear." Russia, China oppose Golden Dome The plan's Golden Dome name stems from Israel's Iron Dome air defence system that has intercepted thousands of short-range rockets and other projectiles since it went into operation in 2011. The United States faces various missile threats from adversaries, but they differ significantly from the short-range weapons that Israel's Iron Dome is designed to counter. The 2022 Missile Defence Review pointed to growing threats from Russia and China. Beijing is closing the gap with Washington when it comes to ballistic and hypersonic missile technology, while Moscow is modernising its intercontinental-range missile systems and developing advanced precision strike missiles, the document said. It also said that the threat of drones, which have played a key role in the Ukraine war, is likely to grow, and warned of the danger of ballistic missiles from North Korea and Iran, as well as rocket and missile threats from non-state actors. Russia and China earlier this month slammed the Golden Dome concept as "deeply destabilising," saying it risked turning space into a "battlefield." It "explicitly provides for a significant strengthening of the arsenal for conducting combat operations in space," said a statement published by the Kremlin after talks between the two sides. In Ukraine, US systems have been used to counter advanced Russian missiles, while American planes and warships helped defend Israel against Iranian attacks last year and have repeatedly shot down missiles and drones launched at ships by Yemen's Tehran-backed Houthi rebels.
