Jamie Carragher makes bizarre Chelsea Champions League group stages prediction

Yahooa day ago
Jamie Carregher does not rate Chelsea still, and now he's made a bizarre prediction about Chelsea and the Champions League.
As we know, the Blues are back in the Champions League this season after some time away from it, and it's been a long awaited return for the club.
EXCLUSIVE! Enzo Maresca asks Chelsea to sign a new centre back!!
The new owners have been battling adversity and criticism to build what they believe is a squad that is ready to challenge on all fronts next season, including in the Champions League. Of course, football is unpredictable and can often throw up major surprises, but surely Chelsea will make it out of the group stages of the competition at the very least!?
I'm not a betting man but if I was, I would certainly drop some cash on Chelsea getting out of their Champions League group and into the knockout stages. It would be quite bizarre to bet otherwise, right?
Well, up steps Jamie Carragher…

As you can see in the vide clip posted on X, Carragher said on a recent show on The Overlap:
'Hot take on Chelsea, I don't think Chelsea will qualify out of the Champions League group stage.'
I have a feeling that this opinion, just like many Carragher opinions on Chelsea of late, may well come back around and bite him in his butt!
Chelsea on fire
As I said, football is unpredictable and can be inconsistent, but right now Chelsea are on fire and have just won the Club World Cup by beating PSG, whom many deem as the best team in the world, with absolute ease.
So to write them off the UCL so easily is just madness from Carragher.

Jamie Carragher slams 'laughable' Sir Jim Ratcliffe for Man Utd's 'mixed messages' as Ruben Amorim faces fight to last '20 weeks' in job

Ratcliffe stressed Man Utd's financial strife Since spent more than £200m this summer Carragher calls out his "mixed messages" Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Earlier this year, minority United owner Ratcliffe suggested the club was close to going bust unless drastic cost-cutting measures were implemented. Now, Liverpool legend Carragher has hit out at the INEOS owner for his "laughable" remarks amid the Red Devils spending more than £200 million ($271m) on players this summer. He also believes that despite head coach Amorim wanting to stay at Old Trafford for two decades, the Portuguese could be gone within a matter of months. WHAT CARRAGHER SAID He wrote in his Telegraph column: "Sir Jim Ratcliffe was stressing the need to slash budgets and raise ticket prices to avoid an economic meltdown. It's laughable he could say that and then a few months later United were doing what they have been doing for years – spending big to revamp their squad. To say the least, there have been mixed messages, and it remains to be seen how much of a financial gamble the club have taken to get so many deals over the line." Carragher added: "Ruben Amorim recently made the bold announcement that he wants to stay at Manchester United for 20 years. His first task going into his season-opener against Arsenal is ensuring he lasts longer than 20 weeks." THE BIGGER PICTURE Many have reacted with surprise at the sheer amount of money United have splashed out this summer, especially after making hundreds of staff redundant. There are reports they may be able to sign Brighton's Carlos Baleba for a club-record fee, which flies in the face of Ratcliffe's previous remarks about tight finances. WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD? In the meantime, former Sporting CP boss Amorim and Ratcliffe will hope that United can start the new Premier League season with a bang as they entertain old adversary Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

2025 English Premier League Predictions: Top 6 Rankings

English Premier League 2025 English Premier League Predictions: Top 6 Rankings Updated Aug. 15, 2025 10:17 a.m. ET share facebook x reddit link With the 2026 FIFA World Cup under a year away, all eyes will be on the upcoming English Premier League campaign, which kicks off today with a matchup between Liverpool vs. Bournemouth. The EPL is home to some of the biggest and brightest stars in world soccer, many of whom will star for their countries in next summer's 48-team tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States. EUROPE'S BEST TEAMS: WHERE BARCELONA, PSG, LIVERPOOL RANK AMONG TOP 20 Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy last season after an outstanding 84-point season and added more attacking talent this season with big-money transfers for Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz. But is this the year Arsenal finally lift the trophy? Can Manchester City reclaim their throne? ADVERTISEMENT Let's take a look at the top of the Premier League and where each team ranks entering the season: Note: League positions reflect last season's finish. Last year, the Reds ran away with the Premier League title, besting second-place Arsenal by 10 points. Despite the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota, Liverpool has only gotten better this summer. Arne Slot's side has been the big winner of this transfer window, dropping north of $350 million on backup keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, and forwards Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. No wonder they're the favorites to retain the English title. After finishing fourth in the Prem last term, the Blues stunned many by winning the expanded, 32-team Club World Cup in July. Can they harness that momentum and use it to challenge for English and European titles next spring? They've got the firepower. Chelsea already have an emerging superstar in winger Cole Palmer — this season he'll be supported by new recruits like strikers Liam Delap and João Pedro, Pedro's fellow Brazilian attacker Estêvão, and English forward Jamie Gittens. The Premier League runner-up in each of the last three seasons, what Mikel Arteta's team is missing at this point are trophies. Still, Arsenal continues to improve. The Gunners knocked then-Champions League holders Real Madrid out of Europe's top club tournament last April, snaring a convincing 5-1 aggregate win. And they've added real quality this summer in the form of defensive midfielder Martín Zubimendi and forwards Viktor Gyökeres and Noni Madueke. City's unprecedented run of four consecutive Premier League titles came to a halt last season, when Pep Guardiola's side finished third, lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace, and were eliminated from European play before the Champions League's round of 16 even began. This team is too good not to bounce back in a big way this year, though — even without club legend Kevin de Bruyne, whose contract wasn't extended. The Magpies eked into the Champions League places last term only because UEFA granted England's top flight one additional spot. Newcastle fans aren't complaining though, though they will be if and when star forward Alexander Isak leaves for Liverpool on the eve of the new season. It's hard to believe that the 20-time English champions finished 15th last season, when they also lost the Europa League final to Premier League rivals Tottenham. But the Red Devils added forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško this window, and they should fare better in Ruben Amorim's first full season at the Old Trafford helm. Bayern Munich in negotiations over Christopher Nkunku move from Chelsea

Bayern Munich are in negotiations over a move for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku. The Bundesliga champions are in talks over a proposed deal for the 27-year-old France international. Chelsea and the player are thought to prefer a permanent switch rather than a loan. Bayern's interest follows the serious ankle injury suffered by Jamal Musiala during the Club World Cup as well as Stuttgart's stance that Nick Woltemade, the Germany international striker, is not available this window after having three bids turned down. Advertisement Nkunku has been the subject of enquiries from clubs in Germany, England and Italy this summer and has long been expected to depart this window, with The Athletic reporting in November that he was not happy at Stamford Bridge. The Athletic reported in the Transfer DealSheet on June 24 that there had been contact from Manchester United, who ultimately prioritised other forward signings, while he also attracted interest from Barcelona earlier in the window. Nkunku's Chelsea contract runs until 2029. He made 43 appearances in all competitions last season and scored 14 goals but started just nine times in the Premier League. Nkunku joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 after signing a pre-contract agreement the previous October, with Chelsea committing to paying more than his €60m release clause to ensure they landed him. Chelsea have added further depth in forward areas this summer after signing Liam Delap for £30m from Ipswich Town and Joao Pedro in a deal worth in excess of £50m from Brighton & Hove Albion.
