WHAT HAPPENED?
Earlier this year, minority United owner Ratcliffe suggested the club was close to going bust unless drastic cost-cutting measures were implemented. Now, Liverpool legend Carragher has hit out at the INEOS owner for his "laughable" remarks amid the Red Devils spending more than £200 million ($271m) on players this summer. He also believes that despite head coach Amorim wanting to stay at Old Trafford for two decades, the Portuguese could be gone within a matter of months.
WHAT CARRAGHER SAID
He wrote in his Telegraph column: "Sir Jim Ratcliffe was stressing the need to slash budgets and raise ticket prices to avoid an economic meltdown. It's laughable he could say that and then a few months later United were doing what they have been doing for years – spending big to revamp their squad. To say the least, there have been mixed messages, and it remains to be seen how much of a financial gamble the club have taken to get so many deals over the line."
Carragher added: "Ruben Amorim recently made the bold announcement that he wants to stay at Manchester United for 20 years. His first task going into his season-opener against Arsenal is ensuring he lasts longer than 20 weeks."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Many have reacted with surprise at the sheer amount of money United have splashed out this summer, especially after making hundreds of staff redundant. There are reports they may be able to sign Brighton's Carlos Baleba for a club-record fee, which flies in the face of Ratcliffe's previous remarks about tight finances.
WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?
In the meantime, former Sporting CP boss Amorim and Ratcliffe will hope that United can start the new Premier League season with a bang as they entertain old adversary Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Villarreal offer ‘short of expectations' for Chelsea defender Renato Veiga — report

Villarreal were linked with unwanted Chelsea defender Axel Disasi earlier this summer, and though nothing came of that, they are still in need of reinforcements at the position and have thus switched their target to unwanted Chelsea defender Renato Veiga instead — and according to Fabrizio Romano, have even made an official play for their 'dream target'. Unfortunately, back in the real world, it sounds like the financial realities of the situation remain the same as before. The La Liga side were not willing or able to spend €30m on Disasi — their record incoming transfer is barely over €20m — and Chelsea are said to be wanting even more for Veiga (€40?!). Whatever their bid is now, it's fallen short of our 'expectations'. This is the trouble in trying to do business outside of England (or Saudi Arabia) or with teams that are not among the European elite. The Premier League (top to bottom) are so far above of most other leagues financially that it becomes an exercise in futility. The levels of money are simply different, even if they are willing to spend. Villarreal finished fifth last season, but were still able to nab a Champions League spot (Spain, like England, get an extra spot thanks to their UEFA coefficient). So perhaps that little boost in income can be turned into a bit of extra cash for Veiga?

Arne Slot issues injury update on Liverpool newcomer

Arne Slot issues injury update on Liverpool newcomer originally appeared on The Sporting News Liverpool managed a win in their opening Premier League match against Bournemouth, prevailing 4-2 after an Antoine Semenyo brace pulled the Cherries level. Arne Slot gave Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez their Premier League debuts for the Reds. Each newcomer impressed, with Ekitike scoring the opening goal. After the match, Slot gave a worrying update on one of the Premier League debutants. Which Liverpool player suffered an injury in the opener? Speaking after the game, Slot opened up about Frimpong's substitution and said, "It wasn't out of luxury. Jeremie Frimpong felt his hamstring at half-time and made a lot of sprints." 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Frimpong showed off his pace down the right-hand side, but it might have cost the Dutch international. " He was doing quite well, but our other full-back, Conor Bradley, is already injured with a hamstring injury, so you don't want to take the risk of losing another full-back. " You could argue, why don't you play Joe Gomez there, but he only had two sessions in pre-season and could only play half an hour, so we started with Wataru Endo and our left full-back Milos Kerkez." Frimpong was subbed off around the hour mark, but it remains to be seen if any extensive damage was done or whether he'll miss any time. Liverpool will take on Newcastle on the 25th of August, giving Frimpong nine days of rest, should he need it. Late goals, Jota tributes and Semenyo racially abused as Liverpool wins Premier League opener

Defending champion Liverpool launched the Premier League with a dramatic 4-2 win over Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday in an emotionally charged match featuring tributes to Diogo Jota and a player reporting racial abuse. Federico Chiesa scored in the 88th minute and Mohamed Salah added another goal in stoppage time as Liverpool recovered after throwing away a two-goal lead. In between goals by Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo that put Liverpool 2-0 ahead, the game was briefly paused in the 28th after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported to referee Anthony Taylor that he was targeted with racist language by a spectator. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola said the person who abused Semenyo was identified. Semenyo, a 25-year-old Ghana international, needed to be consoled by teammates after the alleged incident but played on for the whole match and scored in the 64th and 76th to draw Bournemouth level. His second was a brilliant individual goal starting deep inside his own half. 'I don't know how Ant's played on, to be honest, and come up with those goals,' said Bournemouth captain Adam Smith, who added that Semenyo was 'a little bit down.' Liverpool manager Arne Slot said the incident 'takes the shine off' his team's victory. It was the first competitive match at Anfield since Jota — a popular player for Liverpool for the past five years — and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a car crash in Spain on July 3. Ahead of kickoff, fans held up placards to spell out 'DJ20' and 'AS30' in two of the stands during a period of silence in honor of the Portuguese players. Players from the Liverpool team stood arm-in-arm around the center circle, and staff and players from both clubs wore black armbands. After the final whistle, Salah was reduced to tears as he stood in front of the storied Kop stand and kept going a song about Jota that was being chanted by the home supporters. Salah also repeated Jota's two-armed celebration after his goal, while Ekitike and Gakpo also dedicated their goals to Jota. 'Normally at 2-2, everyone knows which player I look to at that moment in time. I would have loved to bring in Diogo Jota but I could not, for terrible reasons," Slot said. "But tonight, the fans and the players did what he did for us many times in the past.' ___ Steve Douglas is at ___ AP soccer: Steve Douglas, The Associated Press
