Bengaluru flooded but Congress celebrates: BJP slams anniversary event timing
While heavy rains left large parts of Bengaluru waterlogged and claimed three lives over the past 48 hours, the Congress government in Karnataka went ahead with its second anniversary celebrations in Hosapete. However, the public gathering, called Samarpana Sankalpa Samavesha, organised on Tuesday to mark two years of Congress government in the state drawing sharp criticism from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).advertisementWhile the state capital reeled under infrastructure breakdown and flood-related chaos, top Congress leaders, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, welcomed party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi at Jindal Vijayanagara Airport on Tuesday morning. The anniversary celebration commenced in Hosapete amidst continuous heavy rainfall. While many participants were able to take shelter, several others were forced to find cover from rain elsewhere. The relentless downpour led to flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas, as well as traffic congestion at various points across Hosapete.Hosapete, the administrative headquarters of Vijayanagara – a relatively new district carved out of the larger Ballari – is a city located in the north-central part of Karnataka. It's roughly 330-350 km northwest of Bengaluru.
Back in Bengaluru, things were much grimmer with several localities including Sai Layout, Manyata Tech Park and Silk Board Junction being inundated following intermittent rain throughout the weekend and on Monday night. Residents complained of poor drainage, unmotorable roads, and delayed emergency response.advertisementAs news of waterlogging and flooding came in on Monday morning, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar visited the BBMP War Room (Integrated Command and Control Centre) for a briefing from civic commissioner Tushar Giri Nath during the day. Shivakumar visited some affected areas on Monday evening, but reportedly mostly interacted virtually with residents from the flood-hit zones, along with the chief minister. The BJP seized on this, calling the government's absence on the ground 'irresponsible' and its celebrations 'tone-deaf.'State BJP President BY Vijayendra said the situation in Bengaluru was dire and accused the Congress of misplaced priorities.'A few hours of rain have brought Bengaluru to its knees. People are suffering, three lives have been lost, and the government is busy celebrating its anniversary,' Vijayendra told India Today TV. 'The home minister G Parameshwara had the audacity to blame Bengalureans for the flooding — that's not what people expect from a responsible administration. This shows the arrogance of power.'He further accused the Congress of neglecting Bengaluru's infrastructure while only 'talking about tunnels and towers.''Bengaluru residents are among the highest taxpayers, but all they get in return are potholes and waterlogging. The government is not serious about the development of this city,' he added.advertisementFormer Deputy Chief Minister and current BJP MLA Ashwath Narayan also condemned the government's decision to go ahead with the function.'This is not just misplaced priority, it is utter insensitivity. The government is in celebration mode while the city is under water and people are losing their lives,' he said. 'The Congress has done nothing significant in terms of governance or infrastructure in the last two years. Their so-called guarantees are inconsistently delivered and not financially sustainable.'He went on to accuse the Congress of using taxpayer money for populist schemes without accountability, calling the administration a 'government of scams and slogans.''There have been no radical changes, no meaningful development. And now they are busy pleasing their high command while Bengalureans suffer. This government is not just irresponsible — it is indifferent,' Narayan said. The Congress, however, defended its decision to mark the occasion, citing its welfare-driven governance model.Party sources indicated that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister were monitoring the flood situation remotely and that local officials were on the ground to manage relief operations.

Vidarbha Mukti Morcha's two-day dharna in Chanda for statehood
Chandrapur: The Vidarbha Mukti Morcha and its youth wing, Vidarbha Mukti Yuva Morcha, will hold a two-day dharna (sit-in agitation) on June 9 and 10 at the statue of barrister Rajabhau Khobragade, here, to press for the long-pending demand of a separate Vidarbha state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The announcement was made by Vidarbha Mukti Morcha leader Kishore Potonwar during a press conference. Potonwar recalled that a resolution in support of a separate Vidarbha was unanimously passed during the BJP's national convention held in Bhubaneswar in 1997. At the time, several senior BJP leaders from Vidarbha, along with Jambuwantrao Dhote, had taken to the streets. The BJP had promised that it would create a separate Vidarbha state once it comes to power. However, that promise remains unfulfilled, and the BJP has kept silent on the issue. He added that even though leaders like Jambuwantrao Dhote, Rajesaheb Vishweshwar Rao Maharaj, TG Deshmukh, Tirpude, and Biyani are no more, the struggle for Vidarbha continues. Potonwar alleged that the BJP-Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra deliberately sidelined the Vidarbha statehood issue by projecting Shiv Sena at the forefront. He further noted that the Vidarbha Rajya Andolan Samiti had staged a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar and submitted memorandums to Members of Parliament. While BJP facilitated the creation of three new states — Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand — it treated the Vidarbha issue differently from Telangana. Later, Congress carved Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh, but ignored Vidarbha's demand. "There is growing unrest among unemployed youth, farmers, workers, and government employees who can no longer bear the injustice inflicted upon Vidarbha. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now People are preparing for a decisive struggle to save their resources — Surjagad and Manikgarh mines, the rivers Wainganga and Painganga, and the lifeline Godavari," he said. Potonwar called upon to the youth of Vidarbha to join the movement, stating that a separate Vidarbha would pave the way for employment opportunities for educated youth, industrial growth, affordable access to coal, water, and electricity, and an end to load-shedding. He asserted that self-reliance will reduce farmer suicides, and once Nagpur becomes the capital, tribal communities will save on travel expenses and access justice more easily. He also remarked that the EVM machines will be "shut down," hinting at systemic change. Dr Tirumal Mujam, Sunil Junghare, Adv Vilas Mathankar, and Dheeraj Chikte were also present during the press conference.

As Cong seeks curbs on permissions for new constructions, PMC chief says ‘Will bring fundamental changes to improve citizens' lives'
EVEN as the Congress urged Pune Municipal Corporation to put curbs on new constructions in congested parts of the city, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said he was currently looking into problems faced by the city and will soon introduce fundamental changes aimed at easing the lives of Puneites. 'I have just taken charge… Currently, I am busy studying the problems the city is facing. Once I have studied the problems, I intend to bring in fundamental changes to better the lives of citizens,' the PMC chief said on Sunday evening. Ram was responding to a demand raised by the Congress in a letter to PMC, urging it to put curbs on giving permissions to new constructions in congested parts of the city, where adequate infrastructure was missing. 'I went around the city today. Though it was Sunday, there were traffic snarls on congested and narrow roads of the city. During the inspection, I found that only 16 per cent of the stormwater drain work has been completed. It seems PMC is lagging on ensuring adequate basic amenities,' he said. Ram said after studying the problems in the city, he would take all necessary steps to alleviate miseries of people. 'I will study all the suggestions and feedback I get from citizens… And will initiate necessary steps, especially in regard to ensuring basic amenities, including proper stormwater drains, parking facilities, good roads and a better garbage disposal system,' he said. In its letter sent to the PMC chief, the Congress emphasised improving basic infrastructure in the city. The party has urged the commissioner to take strong steps to make life better for citizens. 'We would like to draw the attention of the new PMC commissioner to the absence of adequate and efficient basic infrastructure in the congested parts of Pune city. Roads are narrow, storm water drains get choked even after just one heavy deluge, traffic snarls are common, parking problem has become a big headache… you name it and the citizens in the congested and old parts of the city are grappling with inadequate basic infrastructure,' said Congress spokesperson Gopal Tiwari. The Congress said it was expecting positive steps from the PMC chief. 'We have sent a letter to the PMC commissioner highlighting the problems faced by the citizens in congested parts of the city. We expect that he will initiate positive steps in this regard,' Tiwari said. 'The population of Pune city is increasing day by day and the pressure of additional external growth areas is also coming on the PMC. Traffic congestion and parking issues are becoming severe day by day. But the PMC without applying its mind is indiscriminately giving permission to multi-storeyed buildings up to 25-30 floors. Additional FSIs and TDRs are on a roll. But roads below the towering buildings have not been widened for 50 years. Be it Ghole Road, Apte Road, Bhandarkar Road, Prabhat Road, the situation is similar everywhere in congested parts of the city. The roads are not in a position to take the increasing load of traffic. The storm water drains are inadequate…. and the PMC chief should take steps to first curb permissions for new constructions,' said Tiwari, who is also the founder of the Rajiv Gandhi Smarak Samiti. Tiwari said the Development Plan or Town Plan needs to be revised. 'There is a need to revise the DP and TP so that they are framed taking into consideration the changing times. Especially, there is need to reserve ample parking space for two-wheelers and four-wheelers. If this is done, Pune City will become a chaotic city. Strong steps are needed now. There should be no compromise on this front,' he said. Tiwari said the PMC Standing Committee still exists though and an elected body is not in place. There is an 'Audit Sub-Committee' and audit reports of the work of various civic departments are placed before the Standing Committee which takes a decision on it. 'It is a necessary for the people of Pune to understand what action has been taken on the audit reports of the last three years,' he said. He has also written aggressively on local gondaism. He has primarily written civic stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Khadki, Maval and some parts of Pune. He has also covered stories from Kolhapur, Satara, Solapur, Sangli, Ahmednagar and Latur. He has had maximum impact stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial city which he has covered extensively for the last three decades. Manoj More has written over 20,000 stories. 10,000 of which are byline stories. Most of the stories pertain to civic issues and political ones. The biggest achievement of his career is getting a nearly two kilometre road done on Pune-Mumbai highway in Khadki in 2006. He wrote stories on the state of roads since 1997. In 10 years, nearly 200 two-wheeler riders had died in accidents due to the pathetic state of the road. The local cantonment board could not get the road redone as it lacked funds. The then PMC commissioner Pravin Pardeshi took the initiative, went out of his way and made the Khadki road by spending Rs 23 crore from JNNURM Funds. In the next 10 years after the road was made by the PMC, less than 10 citizens had died, effectively saving more than 100 lives. Manoj More's campaign against tree cutting on Pune-Mumbai highway in 1999 and Pune-Nashik highway in 2004 saved 2000 trees. During Covid, over 50 doctors were asked to pay Rs 30 lakh each for getting a job with PCMC. The PCMC administration alerted Manoj More who did a story on the subject, asking then corporators how much money they story worked as doctors got the job without paying a single paisa. Manoj More has also covered the "Latur drought" situation in 2015 when a "Latur water train" created quite a buzz in Maharashtra. He also covered the Malin tragedy where over 150 villagers had died. ‘Trump was pissed': Ted Cruz on Musk's tweets; says he ‘felt like kids of divorce wishing mommy and daddy would stop screaming'
Ted Cruz says he was with Trump when Musk started attacking the latter on social media Senator Ted Cruz described witnessing Donald Trump 's anger while Elon Musk launched a scathing online attack against the US President on Thursday, likening his position to that of a child amidst parental discord. "I was sitting in the Oval as this unfolded. Trump was pissed. He was venting," the Republican senator disclosed on his podcast "Verdict with Ted Cruz" Friday, quoted by the New York Post. "I was sitting there, and the tweets were coming…. Elon was saying some really harsh things," he added. Cruz, who maintains close friendships with both former associates, further described their widely publicised separation this week as "incredibly painful." "These are two men whom I know very well, they're both good friends of mine," he said. He expressed his discomfort with the situation saying, 'I feel like the kids of a bitter divorce where you're just saying, 'I really wish mommy and daddy would stop screaming.'' The Tesla and SpaceX CEO initiated a prolonged social media campaign against Trump, criticising the president's reconciliation bill as "disgusting" and encouraging Congress to reject it. "Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate," Musk responded after Trump addressed the growing discord. The conflict intensified throughout the week, with Trump threatening to terminate government contracts worth billions with Musk's enterprises, while Musk alleged Trump's reluctance to release the Jeffrey Epstein files was due to his involvement, a post he later deleted, along with few others. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "It just went from zero to 11 instantaneously," Cruz said. "These are two alpha males who are pissed off. And unfortunately, they're unloading on each other … They're angry, it's not complicated." Cruz and his co-presenter agreed both parties had valid points - Trump's budget bill required passage, yet Musk's concerns about deficit reduction warranted attention. "Unfortunately, Elon is working under the assumption that Congress actually wants to do the job and save our country," podcast co-host Ben Ferguson said. "And I think Trump is working under the reality that there's a lot of people in Congress that actually aren't looking out for the American people." On Saturday, Musk removed his Epstein files post, indicating a possible retreat. However, Trump remained firm in his stance. "I have no intention of speaking to him," he informed NBC News.
