At NCW's ‘Jan Sunwai', women battling abuse at marital homes seek justice
New Delhi: A single mother to three girls, 40-year-old Nisha was one of the many women who gathered at the 'Jan Sunwai' at the National Commission for Women's headquarters here on Monday, hoping to get justice as they battle violence, harassment and dowry demands in their marital homes. Nisha's in-laws continue to abuse and threaten her even after her husband's demise last June.
Similar stories played out before the three NCW member-led benches on the first day of the five-day 'Jan Sunwai' camp on Monday. The benches will hold hearings to settle as many of the nearly 1,300 pending cases pertaining to complaints from Delhi filed since 2023. The complainants have been informed to appear before the benches for a quick resolution of cases. During the camp, new complainants will also be counselled by the benches on how to proceed.
Launching the 'Jan Sunwai', both Delhi CM Rekha Gupta and NCW chief Vijaya Rahatkar said the aim is to enable speedy redressal and bring down pendency. Rahatkar said the target is to achieve "zero pendency in complaint resolution by year-end". Gupta also announced that the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) would be reconstituted to strengthen its response to women's concerns.
The hearings are being held under the 'NCW Aapke Dwaar' programme launched in Dec to bring the commission's services closer to women across states. So far, the NCW has held such meetings in 11 states, and now, it is Delhi's turn.
As TOI spoke to women and their families struggling with violence and abuse, new complainants too were seen walking in.
Reema from Kalindi Kunj, who was thrown out of the house by her father-in-law, was one such complainant. Unable to take the abuse any more, Reema broke her silence on Monday — five years after marriage. She with her three-year-old daughter and two-year-old son was among those waiting for their turn to be heard. Her anxious parents tried hard to comfort her as she cried for justice.
One saw Razia quietly empathising with the pain of other women. Through the intervention of the women's cell at the local police station in her area and the NCW, she has reconciled with her husband and moved out of her in-laws home where she was harassed for dowry. However, uncertainty and fear still haunts her, and she waited to tell a bench of her apprehensions.
Over the years, Delhi has been among the three states from where the NCW gets the highest number of complaints across various categories such as domestic violence. Of the total complaints in 2024, 54% (13,868) were received from Uttar Pradesh, followed by 9% from Delhi (2,245) and 5.1% from Maharashtra (1,317).
Between Jan and April this year, the NCW has received 7,788 complaints across various categories, and Delhi accounts for 698 of these, again figuring in the top three — from Uttar Pradesh 3,961 complaints were received and from Maharashtra 480.
Violence within the confines of the home continues to remain a concern, with 24% (6,237) of the total complaints (25,743) received by the NCW from across the country in 2024 pertaining to domestic violence. According to NCW officials, such hearings are being held since Dec and states such as Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha, Kerala, Chandigarh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have been covered.

BJP walkout in the Bengal assembly over Anubrata
Kolkata, June 11 (UNI) Opposition BJP on Wednesday staged a walkout in the West Bengal Assembly after Speaker Biman Banerjee refused to allow the saffron legislators to raise a resolution against the Birbhum's TMC leader Anubrata Mondal's alleged foul language against the Bolpur police station officer-in-charge and against his family members. All BJP MLAs walked out of the Assembly after the chair on Tuesday evening accepted a privilege motion against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari brought by four senior TMC ministers. BJP legislator Shankar Ghosh told media outside the Assembly on Wednesday that the acceptance of the privilege motion was illegitimate since Adhikari had not said anything against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the floor of the House on Tuesday. Speaker Biman Banerjee took exception to Adhikari's version as the Chief Minister "batted for Pakistan in the assembly" while speaking on a resolution brought by the Speaker appreciating the Indian armed forces for retaliation against terrorists in PoK and in Pakistan after the gunmen shot dead 25 tourists and a local at Pahalgam on April 26 in Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday sought a " review action taken report" from the Superintendent of Police, Bolpur, as to what action the law enforcing agency took against Mondal after he allegedly abused the Bolpur IC. A purported audio clip, which went viral revealed that Mondal, also known as the strongman of Birbhum district, used abusive language against the police officer and his family members. The NCW, before seeking the review action taken by the SP, had written to Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar about the purported verbal abuse of a cop in Birbhum by TMC leader Mondal. However, the NWC was unhappy about the reply and expressed dissatisfaction with police not attaching the copy of the FIR and not even seizing the mobile phone from which Mondal had called the police officer. The NCW in its second letter to the Bolpur SP on Tuesday demanded the review action taken report to be returned within five days. NCW member Archana Majumdar said 'The National Commission for Women expresses deep concern over the apparent inaction by the state police in this matter, despite clear and widespread public outrage. This inaction not only emboldens such repeat offenders but also deeply undermines the morale of the police force and shakes public confidence in the neutrality and responsiveness of law enforcement agencies.' A week after the audio conversation between Mondal and the police officer went viral, Mondal appeared before the sub-divisional police officer and recorded his statement. The TMC condemned Mondal's remarks and sought an apology from him, which he promptly complied with.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has strongly criticized Birbhum district police for an inadequate report on the Anubrata Mondal case, involving alleged abuse of a police officer. Expressing "serious dissatisfaction," the NCW demands a revised report with crucial documents like the FIR copy and medical examination details. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads The National Commission for Women (NCW) has pulled up West Bengal's Birbhum district police for submitting a "grossly inadequate" action taken report (ATR) in connection with the case involving Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal, who was allegedly heard hurling "filthy, unspeakable abuses" at a police officer in a viral audio a strongly worded second letter sent on Tuesday to Birbhum SP, the commission expressed "serious dissatisfaction" with the police response and directed the district authorities to submit a revised ATR within five working days."While an ATR has been received, it is grossly inadequate in substance and fails to comply with the requisitions made by the Commission," NCW member Archana Majumdar letter noted that the response lacked certified copies of the FIR, the accused's medical examination report, and other supporting documents, all of which had been specifically concerns about alleged procedural lapses, the NCW questioned whether the interrogation of the accused was videographed, as is mandatory in cases involving serious Commission also flagged the alleged failure to upload the FIR online, which it said violates norms aimed at ensuring transparency and public commission noted that while the mobile phone of the complainant - the officer-in-charge of Bolpur police station - was seized, no digital devices belonging to Mondal had been taken into this a "critical oversight," the NCW stressed that digital evidence could be crucial to the investigation."The seriousness of the charges warrants urgent custodial investigation. However, records reveal that the accused continues to remain at large, without any firm steps taken toward his apprehension," Majumdar said in her to the "differential treatment" being meted out, the NCW remarked, "Had such an offence been committed by any ordinary citizen, the law would have acted with urgency. The law cannot be different for the influential."The commission warned that inaction in the matter would send a "dangerous and demoralising message to society, especially to police officers and their families, that even a man in uniform cannot protect his own family from street-level criminals backed by political power."Invoking Section 10(4) of the NCW Act, the Commission directed Birbhum police to add relevant cognisable sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to the FIR, including Sections 74, 75, 79, 132, 224, 351(3), and 352, citing the grave nature of the also instructed the police to seize Mondal's digital devices without delay, review the need for custodial interrogation, and confirm whether his questioning was videographed. Journalist's arrest over derogatory term on TV show sparks a Jagan vs Chandrababu slugfest
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women issued a statement saying it has taken 'suo motu cognizance of media reports on alleged derogatory remarks made by journalist Krishnam Raju against Amaravati women during a TV debate'. VVR Krishnam Raju, a journalist and political analyst, who made the offensive comment on Kommineni's show, on the Jagan Mohan Reddy family-owned Sakshi TV, is reportedly absconding, and the Andhra Pradesh police are looking to arrest him. Hyderabad: Senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao has been sent to 14 days judicial custody by a Mangalagiri court for a derogatory term used on his TV debate show for women from the Amaravati capital region. 'Referring to Amaravati as a 'capital of prostitutes' is an outrageous insult to women farmers. NCW strongly condemns such unacceptable and inciting statements in public discourse,' the commission said on X Tuesday. NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Andhra Pradesh DGP Harish Gupta directing him for 'a swift and time-bound investigation, and strict action against Raju under relevant laws'. She has asked for an action-taken report within three days. On the TV debate on Friday evening, Raju used the expression 'vaeshyala raajadhani' while objecting to CM Chandrababu Naidu and TDP's use of 'devathala raajadhani' (capital of goddesses), in reference to Amaravati, the AP capital. When host Kommineni made a brief objection over such expressions in a TV debate, Raju defended his remarks, citing reports that said Andhra Pradesh has among the highest concentration of female sex workers in the country. While several complaints were lodged against Raju and Kommineni at various places in AP, the state police arrested Kommineni from his residence at Journalists' Colony in Hyderabad on Monday morning, acting on a FIR based on a complaint by Kambhampati Sireesha, a TDP leader and an office bearer of the state Madiga Corporation. Accused no 1 and 2, Raju and Kommineni, are booked under various sections of the BNS and the SC ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. A police team from Thulluru led by a DySP rank officer took the 68-year-old senior journalist into custody, shifted him to AP and produced him before a magistrate a day later. Since Monday, Sakshi offices at places like Vijayawada were attacked and vandalised by TDP supporters, mainly women. The TDP cadres' strong reactions followed that of the party leaders including supremo Chandrababu Naidu, who also vowed action on Raju and Kommineni. On Saturday, minister Nara Lokesh posted on X a video clip of the debate on Sakshi TV, where Raju made the offensive remarks. Lokesh tagged Jagan and #YCPinsultsWomen. '@ysjagan garu, how can you insult women so appallingly in your media house? The false propaganda with hatred against the self-esteem of mothers and against Amaravati is the height of your depravity! Amaravati is truly the capital of the divinities! Amaravati is the land of mothers who sacrificed their lands…' said Lokesh. 'Jagan should take responsibility' On Sunday, Naidu issued a strong statement condemning the 'disgraceful remarks' made by Krishnam Raju 'on Sakshi TV, a channel owned by former chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, targeting women in the Amaravati region and calling the capital city, a 'capital of prostitutes'. 'Ours is a culture that honours daughters. We belong to a society that reveres the feminine divine. This is our tradition—the essence of Indian life. Particularly among Telugu people, daughters and mothers are held in deep affection and high esteem. In such a state of ours, making disgraceful and vulgar remarks about our mothers and sisters under the guise of political vendetta or media analysis is an unforgivable offence,' said the CM on X on Sunday, sharing the video clip from the show. Assuring that 'those who crossed all boundaries will face the strictest possible consequences,' Naidu said, 'there can be no tolerance for the appalling comments that demean the women of the capital region by likening them to prostitutes—an outright insult to their dignity. I strongly condemn this perverse trend being perpetuated under the cover of politics and media.' The CM went on to criticise his predecessor Jagan 'for not taking responsibility'. 'It is even more distressing that a former chief minister, on whose own media channel these offensive statements were broadcast, has yet to denounce the act or apologise to women—a silence that is deeply troubling.' Taking to X on Monday, after the Kommineni arrest, Jagan remarked, '…democratic voices, intellectuals, and journalists are being silenced through fear, intimidation, and blatant misuse of power under Naidu's anarchic regime'. Jagan called the arrest 'an act of political vendetta'. He questioned the rationale of arresting a moderator for remarks he never made, simply for hosting a debate. 'In any discussion, diverse opinions are natural. Punishing an anchor for guests' statements is not only unjust, it's dangerous,' said the YSRCP chief. Jagan also referred to some past controversial remarks by Chandrababu Naidu himself and his brother-in-law Nandamuri Balakrishna. 'You once asked if a mother-in-law will ever object when a daughter-in-law says she will deliver a boy child. Your brother-in-law even said that when you see a girl, you should either kiss or make her pregnant.' Jagan also accused Chandrababu of failing to provide safety and justice to women and girls since returning to power. — YS Jagan Mohan Reddy (@ysjagan) June 9, 2025 'In just one year of TDP rule, 188 women and girls were raped, and 15 of them were murdered after the assault. Hundreds of cases of harassment and violence have gone unpunished. This is your track record' Jagan said, calling it a complete breakdown of law and order in AP. On Tuesday, YSRCP women's wing leaders like MLC Varadu Kalyani led protests in several places like Vijayawada, demanding the TDP-led NDA regime act to curb the alarming rise in rapes, atrocities on women, and the girl child in the state, 'instead of targeting journalists like Kommineni'.
