Collector calls for action plan to prevent drug abuse
Addressing a meeting on the Annual Action Plan 2024–25 under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan held at the Video Conference Hall in the District Collectorate on Friday, the collector pointed out that a comprehensive strategy should be developed based on reports gathered from concerned departments and submitted to the government.
The meeting was convened under the aegis of the Department for the Welfare of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens. It saw the participation of Assistant Director Rayeiz Fatima, Excise Superintendent Ravi Kumar, District Education Officer (DEO) Janardhan Reddy, District Information Officer Sunitha, ICDS Project Director Leelavati, Juvenile Home Superintendent Hussain Basha, among others.
Collector Raja Kumari underlined that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was initiated in 2020 by the Government of India as a nation-wide campaign to curb drug abuse. She directed officials to implement extensive awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, and educational institutions about the ill effects of substance abuse by screening informative videos.
She announced that from June 1 to June 26, dedicated teams of officials will undertake outreach programs to create widespread awareness in the district. Special emphasis will be given to sensitizing parents in underprivileged colonies about the adverse impact of alcohol and drug abuse on children. Furthermore, the public will be educated about the harmful physical and mental consequences of consuming various narcotic substances.
Education Department, Excise Department, ICDS, Juvenile Home, DRDA, District Information Office, MEPMA, and medical officials presented their proposed initiatives to be incorporated in the 2024–25 annual action plan to the District Collector.

Kurnool: As part of World Breastfeeding Week celebrations, an awareness programme was organised on Tuesday at Anganwadi Centre-3, Bapuji Nagar, located in KVR Gardens, Kurnool. The event focused on creating a supportive environment for breastfeeding and highlighted the crucial role of family members in encouraging this practice. Mothers were felicitated, and participants collectively pledged to promote and practice exclusive breastfeeding. Speaking on the occasion, ICDS Project Director P Vijaya stated that the State government, through the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), is providing nutritious food to pregnant and lactating women to ensure maternal and child well-being. She stated that regular consumption of this supplementary nutrition can help prevent anemia and other health issues in both mothers and children. She also underlined that mother's milk is equivalent to nectar for newborns and recommended exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by appropriate complementary feeding. She further urged family members, particularly husbands and in-laws, to provide emotional and practical support to lactating mothers by ensuring nutritious meals and adequate rest. The event concluded with the felicitation of two healthy lactating mothers with flowers and fruits. Among those present were CDPO Anuradha, EO Rajeswari, Supervisor Varalakshmi, Anganwadi workers, helpers, and a large number of women beneficiaries.

Centre likely to extend tenure of Principal Scientific Advisor Ajay Sood
The current Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the Government of India Dr Ajay Sood is likely to continue in his post with a one-year extension. A new person is unlikely to be appointed as the PSA this year, according to people in know of the matter. He was appointed to the post in 2022, with his tenure coming to an end this year. The office of the PSA was established in November 1999 by the cabinet secretariat, with only four persons, including Dr Sood, having served in the position. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was the first to hold the position. The office advises the Prime Minister and the cabinet on matters related to science, technology, and innovation. Dr Sood, a physicist from the Indian Institute of Science, has also served as a member of the Prime Minister's Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC) — the body that assists the PSA in guiding the government. He also served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, which was replaced by the PM-STIAC in 2018. While Dr Sood's research focuses on the physics of quantum materials, having taken over as the PSA amidst the pandemic, one of the focus areas for the scientific body added under his tenure was One Health Mission. The PSA office has been driving collaborations between several ministries to promote the health of not just humans, but plants and animals, together. In addition to One Health, Dr Sood's office has also overseen work on national missions related to AI, quantum technologies, and deep ocean exploration. His extension is expected to provide continuity to these initiatives at a time when the government is seeking to strengthen its scientific research ecosystem and boost innovation-driven economic growth. Collector conducts surprise inspection of PHC in Srisailam
Srisailam: District Collector G Raja Kumari emphasized the need for doctors to remain accessible to patients and provide them with quality healthcare services. On Sunday, she conducted a surprise inspection of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) in Srisailam, assessing the functioning and infrastructure of these medical facilities. During her visit, she stated that the State government is giving high priority to public healthcare, allocating significant funds to support the medical needs of the underprivileged. She urged doctors at government hospitals to approach their duties with empathy and ensure the poor, who often cannot afford private treatment, receive timely and effective care. She directed healthcare personnel to improve maternal care services and increase institutional deliveries at PHCs. She stressed the importance of ensuring that essential medicines are always available to patients and instructed staff to maintain cleanliness in and around hospital premises. As part of the inspection, she reviewed data on the number of deliveries conducted monthly, daily patient visits, availability of doctors and staff, and the presence of essential medical equipment in all wards.
