Government notifies SEZ reforms to boost Semiconductor and Electronics component manufacturing
The Union government has introduced pioneering reforms in the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) rules to address the specialized needs of semiconductor and electronics component manufacturing sectors. Since manufacturing in these sectors is highly capital intensive, import dependent and involve longer gestation periods before turning profitable, rule amendments have been carried out to promote pioneering investments and boost manufacturing in these high technology sectors.
After amendments in Rule 5 of SEZ Rules, 2006, an SEZ set up exclusively for the manufacturing of semiconductors or electronic components will require a minimum contiguous land area of only 10 hectares, reduced from the earlier requirement of 50 hectares. Further, amendment to Rule 7 of SEZ Rules, 2006, allows the Board of Approval for SEZs to relax the condition requiring SEZ land to be encumbrance-free in cases where it is mortgaged or leased to the Central or State Government or their authorized agencies.
The amended Rule 53 will allow the value of goods received and supplied on a free-of-cost basis to be included in Net Foreign Exchange (NFE) calculations and assessed using applicable customs valuation rules. Moreover, amendments have been made in Rule 18 of the SEZ Rules to allow SEZ units in semiconductor as well as electronics component manufacturing sector to also supply domestically into the Domestic Tariff area as well after payment of applicable duties.
The amendments will boost high-tech manufacturing, spur growth of semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and create high skilled jobs in the country.
These amendments have been notified by the Department of Commerce on 3rd June, 2025.

India scuppered 200,000 cyberattacks during Operation Sindoor: Khattar
India foiled around two lakh cyberattacks targeting its power infrastructure in over the week during the Operation Sindoor, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said here on Thursday. "Since the advancement in technology, new dangers have emerged -- cyberattacks or cybercrimes. There has been an increase in these, but the government has worked on it, and our cybersecurity has almost stopped all such dangers," Khattar told reporters here. He was addressing a press conference on the completion of 11 years of the BJP-led Central government. "There have been many cyberattacks on the country. As far as the Power department is concerned, around two lakh cyberattacks were attempted, but our cyber department foiled each one of them, and there were no losses," the minister said. Khattar said these attempts were made in "eight to ten days" around the time Operation Sindoor went underway. Asked whether the attacks were made from within the country or outside it, the minister said these attacks can take place from any corner of the world. "It is known worldwide that those against us will do things like these, but We have stopped such attacks. Our system is capable and in the future also, we will foil all such attacks," he said. "When someone fails for the first time, and second time, he will ultimately get discouraged and stop," he added.

Baij serves legal notice to Netam, BJP leaders over conversion remark
RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee president Deepak Baij has issued legal notices to former Union Minister Arvind Netam, Chhattisgarh Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap, and BJP's Bastar MP Mahesh Kashyap, seeking clarification within 15 days regarding their recent remarks about Baij's alleged religious conversion. Sushil Anand Shukla, head of the Chhattisgarh Congress Communication Department, confirmed the development. The controversy arises from a press conference held in Raipur on June 7, during which Arvind Netam—who had recently attended an RSS event in Nagpur—reportedly questioned Baij's religious identity. Netam said, 'I want to ask Baij whether he has converted to Christianity. I suspect this when he speaks such things. I would also like to ask what the Congress policy is regarding religious conversion.' Baij considers this statement misleading and damaging to his public image. In the legal notice, Baij, a former Bastar MP, reaffirms his deep faith in Budhadev, Mahadev, Maa Danteshwari, and all Hindu gods and goddesses. The notice states that Netam's comment constitutes a criminal offence under Sections 353 and 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 353 deals with 'statements conducing to public mischief,' and Section 356 pertains to 'defamation.' Similar legal notices have also been issued to Kedar Kashyap and Mahesh Kashyap under the same provisions. According to the notice, Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap had accused Baij of sheltering religious conversions in Bastar. Likewise, Mahesh Kashyap had reportedly emphasised the anti-conversion narrative in Bastar, indirectly challenging Baij's stance on religious freedom and conversion in tribal communities. Baij has demanded a public apology from all three leaders. The notice warns that if no response is received within 15 days, a criminal case will be filed, and further legal action will be pursued.
