'Committed to speedy reforms': PM Modi chairs key business meet; next-generation GST reforms discussed
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a high-level meeting with senior ministers, secretaries and economists to discuss the roadmap for 'next-generation reforms' and a revision of GST laws. Sharing a post on X, the Prime Minister said, 'Chaired a meeting to discuss the roadmap for Next-Generation Reforms.' 'We are committed to speedy reforms across all sectors, which will boost Ease of Living, Ease of Doing Business and prosperity,' he added. The meeting was attended by Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Piyush Goyal and Lalan Singh. This high level meeting came after PM Modi's Independence Day address, where he promised a 'Diwali gift' in the form of GST reforms and a lighter tax burden. 'This Diwali, I am going to make it a double Diwali for you... Over the past eight years, we have undertaken a major reform in GST... We are bringing next-generation GST reforms. This will reduce the tax burden across the country,' he said, ensuring that these reforms directly benefit citizens and stimulate economic activity. Following his announcement, the Centre rolled out a draft blueprint for GST 2.0, proposing two primary tax slabs, 5% for essential items and 18% for most other goods, to simplify the system and ease compliance. Currently, the GST framework has five slabs—nil, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%—with additional rates of 0.25% and 3% on precious metals. PM Modi also announced the formation of a Task Force for next-generation reforms, which will review existing laws, rules and procedures related to economic activities. The timing of these announcements is significant, as they come amid heightened trade tensions with the United States. US President Donald Trump slapped India with an additional 'penalty' tariff of 25% on all Indian imports, on top of the 25% duty already in place, citing India's continued purchase of Russian oil. While the 25% rate took effect from August 7, 2025, the newly announced additional tariff will come into place August 27. In response, the ministry of external affairs called the move "unfortunate" and reiterated its stand that India would continue to protect its "own national interest." C P Radhakrishnan to file nominations as NDA's Vice Presidential candidate on August 20
Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan will file the nomination as the Vice Presidential candidate of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance on Wednesday, August 20, said Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju. In addition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many of his cabinet colleagues, the chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of several states ruled by the BJP and its allies are expected to participate in the exercise. 'Nomination of C.P. Radhakrishnan as NDA's Vice Presidential candidate will be filed on August 20, at 11 am,' Rijiju told the reporters. 'Under the leadership of PM Modi, all NDA leaders will participate in the nomination filing process,' he added. Meanwhile, on Monday, Radhakrishnan arrived in the national capital and met NDA leaders, including PM Modi. His visit comes a day after he was named the NDA's vice-presidential candidate. A host of Union ministers, including the BJP's Bhupender Yadav, Pralhad Joshi and Kiren Rijiju and the TDP's K Ram Mohan Naidu, received Radhakrishnan here, ahead of a host of meetings the NDA has planned in connection with his campaign. Later in the evening, the vice-presidential candidate attended a meeting of NDA leaders where he was felicitated. After the former Tamil Nadu BJP president and two-term ex-Lok Sabha MP met him, Modi said on X, 'Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji. Conveyed my best wishes on his being the NDA's vice-presidential nominee.' 'His long years of public service and experience across domains will greatly enrich our nation. May he continue to serve the nation with the same dedication and resolve he has always demonstrated,' the prime minister said. The NDA's numerical superiority has made Radhakrishnan's victory a certainty. But the ruling alliance's managers are in overdrive to consolidate maximum support in his favour to send out a political statement amid indications by the INDIA bloc parties that it will force a contest by naming its own candidate. The NDA received a boost after former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party, one of the few parties not aligned to either of the two rival blocs, extended its support to Radhakrishnan's candidature. The regional party has 11 MPs in Parliament, whose members make up the electoral college for the VP election. Union minister Rajnath Singh, who is overseeing the campaign and has reached out to different parties, had spoken to Reddy.
