Order your copy today online or pick one up at retail racks and newsstands nationwide.] Advertisement After coming a red-zone conversion away from upsetting the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC divisional round, the Rams faced something of a fork in the road this offseason. Even as they worked on a contract restructure, the Rams allowed quarterback Matthew Stafford to explore the possibility of a trade to another franchise. But Stafford and the Rams recommitted to each other, and in doing so, the franchise clarified its timeline. Stafford is back to lead an offense full of firepower, from the receiving duo of Puka Nacua and Davante Adams to reliable running back Kyren Williams. A young pass rush turned from a question mark at the beginning of last season into something the Rams can build around after hitting on Jared Verse and Braden Fiske in the 2024 draft. The Adams signing was one of the biggest of free agency. Defensive tackle Poona Ford shored up a shaky run defense. And now the Rams, coming off an NFC West title and a playoff win, are ready to compete again for the NFC crown — and maybe more if things break their way. Offense The Rams swapped out former Super Bowl MVP wide receiver Cooper Kupp for Adams this offseason, taking the veteran who has had five straight 1,000-yard seasons. After finishing 25th in red-zone conversion rate in 2024, the Rams added the receiver who ranked fifth in the NFL in red-zone touchdowns in 2023 with six. Advertisement The Rams also brought back some familiar faces on offense. Receiver Tutu Atwell returns, with head coach Sean McVay promising to do more to utilize the speedy receiver. The Rams need someone like Atwell to stretch the field so that Nacua and Adams have more room to operate underneath. Even at center, where Beaux Limmer took over midseason in 2024, the Rams have already announced that free-agent reacquisition Coleman Shelton would take the reins. Shelton, who started for the Rams in 2023 before playing in Chicago last season, provides a steady presence at the line of scrimmage, and his teammates respect his ability to call out blocking assignments before the snap. One area to watch for snap distribution will be running back. Williams is the clear leader of the room after a second consecutive 1,100-yard season. The Rams love his ability to turn a run that is blocked for three yards into a four- or five-yard gain, and his ability to pick up blitzes keeps him on the field for third downs. Advertisement Blake Corum was drafted in the third round last year to be Williams' backup, but his skill set is so comparable to the starter that he doesn't add much to the offense when he's out there. Enter Jarquez Hunter, the Auburn running back who ran a 4.44 40-yard dash during the draft process. His speed and strength give him a good chance to usurp Corum for the No. 2 job and give the Rams offense a change of pace. At tight end, Tyler Higbee should continue to get the lion's share of snaps. He provided a big boost to the offense when he came back from a knee injury in December, particularly with his ability to get open in the red zone. But the Rams will also try to get second-round pick Terrance Ferguson on the field, either in more 12-personnel sets or with Ferguson as the lone tight end. The Rams like his after-the-catch talent, his ability to line up in multiple spots around the field and his sense for space when things go off-schedule. Defense The Rams are looking to build off a promising first season under defensive coordinator Chris Shula. The unit was driven by its pass rush; including the playoffs, Verse led the NFL with 89 quarterback pressures in 2024, while defensive tackle Kobie Turner has more pressures against double-teams since the start of the 2023 season than any other player. Rams edge rusher Jared VerseEric Hartline-Imagn Images But the Rams need to find ways to be a more balanced defense and stop the run from time to time, especially after Saquon Barkley single-handedly sent them home in January. The addition of Ford goes a long way in that effort. He had 8.5 run stuffs in 2024 and will absorb blocks in the middle of the Rams' 3-4 scheme. Advertisement But the Rams also implemented a Cheetah scheme after the bye last year, with five defenders at the line of scrimmage and outside linebacker Michael Hoecht lined up as the sole inside 'backer. Who will fill that role after Hoecht's departure in free agency will be a big storyline entering training camp. Rookie edge rusher Josaiah Stewart could be a candidate, given that he has enough experience dropping into coverage to fill that aspect of the role. The biggest position battle entering camp will be for the second linebacker job next to Omar Speights. The Rams signed Nate Landman to a one-year deal in free agency, and he's a reliable tackler who is solid against the run. But fifth-round pick Chris Paul Jr. could provide a more dynamic element to the defense with his coverage skills and ability to blitz, giving Shula another weapon to utilize in third-and-long packages. Specialists Placekicker Joshua Karty went through some growing pains as a rookie, but he still connected on 85.3% of his field-goal attempts in his first season, including a 58-yarder. He needs to reduce his four missed PATs, but he gives the Rams a more reliable option overall than they had in previous years. Advertisement Punter Ethan Evans proved to be a weapon for the Rams in 2024, placing 30 of his 55 attempts inside the opposing 20-yard line. His combination of placement and natural leg strength gives the Rams a lot of confidence in Evans entering his third season. The Rams will likely roll out Xavier Smith and Jordan Whittington as punt and kickoff returners, respectively, again this season. Smith provided a couple of energizing returns, but for the most part, these units were workmanlike rather than dynamic. Final analysis With so much continuity from last year's roster that came within striking distance of the NFC Championship Game, the Rams enter 2025 with more confidence than they've had since 2021, when they went on to win Super Bowl LVI. Are the Rams ready to get back to the top of the mountain? That remains to be seen, but they should compete for their third NFC title in eight seasons. Your guide to the Rafael Devers trade. Plus: Shohei Ohtani back on the mound tonight

We have our first absolute stunner of the year: Rafael Devers to the Giants for Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks and two minor leaguers. Plus: Shohei Ohtani returns to the mound … tonight?! I'm Levi Weaver, here with Ken Rosenthal. Welcome to The Windup! So this is how the saga ends: The Boston Red Sox traded the 28-year-old Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants for RHP Jordan Hicks, LHP Kyle Harrison and two minor leaguers — 22-year-old OF/1B James Tibbs III and 20-year-old RHP Jose Bello. Wow. First up: let's take a look at the players: Know what's funny? The Giants could currently use a first baseman, and third baseman Matt Chapman is currently on the IL. No idea if Devers will pack his glove, or if he'll bump Wilmer Flores from DH to first base. Meanwhile, in Boston, this clears a lane for Masataka Yoshida to return from a shoulder injury that has kept him on the shelf all season. He's been capable of swinging a bat for a while now, but can't yet throw. From my latest column: The only question that matters, in the wake of the Red Sox showing Devers who's the boss, is this: Are the Sox a better team? For 2025, it's difficult to imagine the answer is yes. Beyond that, the Sox might come out ahead, but only if president of baseball operations Craig Breslow puts the team's savings on Devers — some $255 million over the next eight-plus seasons — to good use. Advertisement Based on Breslow's performance thus far, including his dubious return for Devers from the Giants, believe it when you see it. There is no drama like Red Sox drama, and their latest messy divorce with a star player is one that figures to generate debate for some time. Only the Red Sox could upstage themselves after sweeping the Yankees for their third straight series win over a division rival and fifth straight victory overall. This had to happen now? It could not wait until the offseason? By holding off, the Sox might have given themselves a better chance to continue their 2025 revival. They then could have shopped Devers to the entire industry this winter while also using him as a hedge against the possible departure of third baseman Alex Bregman, who is an opt-out waiting to happen. But nope, the Sox were giddy to find an immediate taker for Devers, and perhaps for good reason. The Giants assumed the remainder of Devers' 10-year, $313.5 million contract in only its second year, yet still parted with four players. Sure, Devers' contract is likely to age poorly. But he is still only 28. And good luck to the Red Sox replacing one of the top 10 to 15 hitters in the game, no matter how many precious prospects they push to the majors. More Betts angle: 'It's just crazy' — Betts reacts to former teammate's trade. February 2024: Devers calls out the Red Sox front office for not investing more money in the roster. Feb. 15, 2025: Red Sox do invest more money in the roster, signing third baseman Alex Bregman. This is presumably not what Devers meant. Feb. 17: Devers says he's not moving off third base. March 13: After conversations with manager Alex Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, Devers says he is, in fact, moving off third base. May 8: After an injury to first baseman Triston Casas, the team talks to Devers about playing first base. He speaks out again, saying, 'They can't expect me to play every single position,' and adding: 'They put me in this situation, and they told me that they didn't want to allow me to play any other position. Now, I think they should do their jobs, essentially, and hit the market and look for another player. I'm not sure why they want me to be in-between the way they have been.' May 9: Red Sox owner John Henry flies to Kansas City to meet up with the team and have a conversation with Devers. May 12: After getting out to a rough start to the season, Devers' bat heats up, earning him AL Player of the Week honors. Ken says the Red Sox should just leave Devers alone and let him be a successful DH. Advertisement May 23: Bregman injures his quad, creating a (temporary) opening at third base. Cora says the team is going to … just leave Devers alone and let him be a successful DH. June 15: Devers homers as the Red Sox sweep the Yankees. After the game, he is traded to the Giants. I'll let Jen McCaffrey take the story from here. Speaking of the Giants … Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, Bryce Harper … What do they have in common? They were all heavily pursued by the Giants the last time they hit free agency. Another commonality: None of them actually signed with the Giants. It's not that San Francisco hasn't signed any free agents. Jung Hoo Lee, Matt Chapman and Willy Adames exist. But Devers is a different echelon. On last night's ESPN broadcast, Clayton Kershaw called him a 'top-10' hitter in the league 'at worst.' Since his debut in 2017, Devers has hit 215 home runs. Nobody has hit more than 111 (Mike Yastrzemski) in a Giants uniform over that time. Hits? Devers has 1,136, almost 500 more than the Giants' leader (Brandon Crawford, 645). Pick a category: Runs, doubles, RBIs … nobody's close. Of course, one factor is that Devers has played 1,053 games since his debut, and nobody has played more than 762 games (Crawford) for the Giants since then. But that's actually a supporting argument for this trade. Devers is signed through 2033. He could be the team's first real long-term superstar since … well, the guy who made this trade. Even after losing two of three in L.A. over the weekend, the Giants are just two games behind the Dodgers. If there's a time to go for it, it's now. On Saturday, Ohtani said he could be back on a big-league mound before the All-Star break. Well, now he'll be the opener tonight against the Padres. More on this tomorrow. Shohei Ohtani set to pitch 1st game for Dodgers against the Padres
Shohei Ohtani will return to the mound on Monday night when the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the San Diego Padres in what is set to be his first pitching appearance since Aug. 23, 2023. The Dodgers made the announcement of Ohtani's return to the bump on Sunday night amid the team's 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants. Ohtani has not pitched since he was a member of the Los Angeles Angels. He had an elbow procedure in between the 21 months he was kept from the pitcher's mound. He will likely be used as the opener for the Dodgers. "Shohei is getting antsy, which is a good thing for us," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the team announced Ohtani was going to be on the bump. "I don't know if it's going to be one or two innings, but my guess is probably an inning to start. But it's a good thing. The live, simulated, or whatever, sort of ran its course. He's ready to make his debut on the mound." It was expected Ohtani was going to return to the pitcher's mound at some point when he signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with Los Angeles before the 2024 season. It was only a matter of time, and the Dodgers had no qualms about slow-rolling his efforts to pitch again. He started bullpen sessions on March 29 and threw batting practice on May 25. "There's been a lot of anticipation," Roberts said. "I think we've done it the right way as far as our process, communicating with Shohei and feeling good. ... It's good for our team. Our guys are excited about this potential. And obviously, most important, I'm excited for Shohei." Ohtani is one of the rare players in the sport who can both pitch and hit. He has made 86 appearances as a pitcher and struck out 608 batters with a 3.01 ERA. He only ever pitched for the Los Angeles Angels in MLB. Los Angeles is dealing with a slew of injuries in its rotation. Roki Sasaki is set to be sidelined for the long term with right shoulder impingement, Blake Snell is missing time due to left shoulder inflammation, and Tyler Glasnow is dealing with right shoulder inflammation.
