Born in Udupi, Karnataka, into a Konkani-speaking family, Daya Nayak's rise has been anything but ordinary. The youngest child of Badda and Radha Nayak, he started his working life at a tea stall before moving to Mumbai in 1979 to support his family. While living in a hotel portico where he worked, he completed his Class 12 from a municipal school in Goregaon and later graduated from CES College, Andheri.

Nayak joined the police force in 1996 and quickly gained fame for his role in Mumbai's fight against organized crime. In a city plagued by underworld violence during the 1990s, he was part of the elite "encounter squad" and was credited with neutralizing over 80 gangsters, including notorious names such as Vinod Matkar, Rafik Dabba, Sadik Kalia, and three Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives.
His first major breakthrough came in December 1996, when he shot dead two gangsters from the Chhota Rajan gang in Juhu after they opened fire on him. The daring encounter established him as a fearless officer in the police ranks.

Nayak's career, however, was not without turbulence. In 2004, the
Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act
(MCOCA) court ordered the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate him over allegations of disproportionate assets. The probe—triggered after he set up a school in Karnataka under his mother's name—led to raids in Mumbai and Bangalore and claims that he owned two luxury bus fleets under the name Vishal Travels.
Though arrested during the probe, Nayak was eventually cleared due to lack of sufficient evidence. After a prolonged suspension lasting six years, he was reinstated in 2012 and returned to active duty.

(ATS), Nayak contributed to the high-profile case involving gelatin sticks found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani's residence. His team played a role in investigating the linked murder of Mansukh Hiran.

One of the tyres of the aircraft deflated while it was parked in the apron after the passengers had alighted safely, Dumna Airport Director Rajeev Ratan Pandey told PTI over the phone. Ather Energy doubles volumes, pares Q1 loss to Rs 178 cr
BEGALURU: Ather Energy reduced its net loss to Rs 178.2 crore in the June quarter from Rs 182.9 crore a year earlier, as strong cost control and software-led monetisation helped offset pricing pressures. Revenue rose 83% year-on-year to Rs 672.9 crore, while volumes nearly doubled to 46,078 units, led by demand for its family-focused Rizta scooter and an expanded retail footprint. Ebitda margin improved by 1,700 basis points year-on-year to -16%. 'A year ago, our Ebitda margin was at -36% in FY24, we closed FY25 at -23% and this quarter we are at -16%,' CFO Sohil Parekh told TOI in an interview. 'It has been a consistent improvement driven by clockwork value engineering across multiple R&D projects, supported by a 45% R&D-heavy workforce. These are structural improvements, not just commodity tailwinds. ' Ather Energy has also leaned on software revenue to improve profitability. Its paid software suite, AtherStack Pro, which offers advanced features like auto-hold and ride analytics, has an attach rate – the percentage of new buyers opting for it – of nearly 89%. He noted that the company has been able to hold its average selling price (ASP) while gaining share. 'We gained share without cutting prices. In fact, we've maintained our ASP and even inched prices up slightly in places,' Phokela added, calling it a sign that 'sanity is starting to return to the industry.' The company added 95 new experience centres in the quarter, taking its network to 446, and is leaning on a new compact store format that breaks even at just 12-13 units a month. 'This allows us to profitably enter smaller towns. If a city sells 100 units annually, we have the right to play there,' Phokela said. On the technology front, Ather Energy has started deploying lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry – cheaper and more stable than nickel-based batteries – and is preparing to launch its cost-optimised EL platform, which will underpin a new line of scooters designed for lower price points. 'EL allows us to attack price points we can't currently reach profitably, while LFP will become a larger part of our portfolio in the coming months,' Phokela added. Addressing concerns over rare-earth supply risks, especially China's export curbs on key materials used in EV motors, Phokela said that the company was 'exploring multiple options and technologies,' adding that any disruption 'would be limited to 7-8 days.' He added that while the Bengaluru-headquartered company currently leads in South India, Middle India (comprising Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha) is its next big growth market. CSP operator shot at in Samastipur, over Rs 1 lakh looted
Patna: Armed miscreants shot at an SBI customer service point (CSP) operator and looted Rs 1.25 lakh from an SBI customer service point (CSP) at Malinagar village under Chakmahesi police station area in Samastipur district on Monday. The CSP operator, Manish Kumar, was shot in the right thigh while he was attempting to catch hold of the fleeing robbers, police said. Chakmahesi SHO, Santosh Kumar Yadav, said: "The robbers fired shots while fleeing, injuring the CSP operator. The stolen amount is approximately Rs 1.25 lakh," he said. Yadav said the initial inquiry from the victim revealed that the incident occurred around 1pm when two masked men, posing as customers, entered the CSP on two separate motorcycles. As they approached the counter, they brandished pistols and demanded money. "After seizing the cash from the counter, the robbers attempted to escape. In a bid to stop them, Manish hurled a hammer at the robbers, but it missed the target. In retaliation, the robbers opened fire, hitting Kumar in the thigh," he said. One of the robbers' motorcycles could not start so they escaped on a bike.
