Help Wentworth dancers breakdance to world champs
NINE gifted young dancers from Dance Movement, a Wentworth-based youth arts programme, have been awarded the honour of representing South Africa in the United Dance Organisation (UDO) World Street Dance Championships. The championships will be held in Blackpool, England, from August 13-17. Also read: Durban Dance Festival celebrates 30 years with electric moves As the second-largest hip hop dance competition in the world, the UDO Championships welcome over 8000 dancers from more than 52 countries. Jarryd Watson, artistic director of Dance Movement, said he was filled with pride over their selection. The team comprises Camden Walljee, Owami Ngcobo, Juwaad Williams, Kaylin Sullaphen, Nicaydin Chetty, Chay Botman, Zeke King and Jacqueline Linda. The performers, all from disadvantaged backgrounds in Wentworth, will look to entertain the crowd with a mix of hip hop forms from breakdancing, housing, popping and locking to krumping. 'Our dancers are highly versatile and have been working hard to be ready for this chance. This is a great opportunity for them as it exposes them to the international dance industry, that can create career paths for them abroad and opportunities to win cash prizes and bursaries to prestigious arts colleges in the UK,' said Watson. For the Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation (Waco), participating in the UDO World Championships is not merely an event, it is a chance to place South African street dance abilities on a global platform. Also read: Watch: Pint-sized ray of sunshine captures hearts on train 'This platform allows Waco's dancers to demonstrate their skills and cultural expressions, fostering cross-cultural exchange and understanding. Competing at such a prestigious event not only elevates the profile of South African street dance but also inspires young dancers within the community,' said Watson. This is not the first time Dance Movement has been in the limelight. Their dancers have always been among the top runners-up over the years, with impressive second and fourth finish results and a soloist who achieved first place. To make the dreams of these young talents come true, they must overcome financial hurdles. Watson said the team needs to raise R150 000, which will cover essential expenses like return flights, accommodation, visas, meals, travel insurance and local transfers within the UK. Support the dream: As a registered non-profit entity Dance Movement relies heavily on donations from the community. The group has also started a BackaBuddy campaign that people can donate to at or you can contact Jarryd Watson on 082 683 9665. Tumi Morake to headline JiVE Cape Town Funny Festival
The festival will be held in Cape Town later in June. Award-winning comedian Tumi Morake is set to headline the 26th edition of the JiVE Cape Town Funny Festival. The festival will be held at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town from 17 to 29 June. Speaking to The Citizen, Morake, who is based in Atlanta, USA, said she is looking forward to reconnecting with audiences. 'It feels like going back to my favourite uncle's house after a long time! 'I am looking forward to one of the best audiences in this country and having a good time,' she said. ALSO READ: Event organiser demands over R80k refund after Pearl Thusi no-show A full-circle moment for Tumi Morake Morake said returning to the JiVE Cape Town Funny Festival is a full-circle moment and described it as a great platform for both seasoned and upcoming comedians. 'It's a mixed bag of goodies that gives everyone a chance to shine. You perform for audience sizes you don't normally get to, so you sharpen your skills. 'Also, it is a great platform to get your name out there and share a stage with international acts.' The 26th edition of the JiVE Cape Town Funny Festival features a line-up of both international and local stars, including Robby Collins, Kagiso Mokgadi, Charlie Caper, Baccalà Clown Emo, and Loukmaan and Friends. Morake is one of the leading names in South African comedy. She has won several awards, including the Savanna Comics' Choice Award, and has been named a Free State Icon. In 2018, she made history as the first African woman to appear in a Netflix comedy special, Just For Laughs Festival, which was streamed globally the following year. After spending the past few years in the United States, she says the experience has sharpened her comedy without changing its core. 'Living in the US has taught me the value of cultural context and research — understanding Ebonics and references makes a big difference. 'It has also taught me to appreciate how well-versed we are in American politics. But the more true I am to my South African roots, the more audiences lean in.' Morake said she enjoys performing at home, particularly because of South Africa's rich linguistic diversity. 'Switching language lanes is the thing I miss most when I'm away. In one South African set, you can go through half the country's official languages!' NOW READ: 'It cannot carry on as things have been' – Gayton McKenzie as he cuts funding for Downtown Music Hub

Reel tribute: celebrating Presley Chweneyagae's Oscar-winning legacy with special screenings
DStv and Showmax have organised special screenings of his most notable works, including the film that catapulted him to stardom, " Tsotsi ". Chweneyagae died of natural causes on May 27. The South African entertainment industry recently lost one of the country's most iconic talents: Presley Chweneyagae . In the week following his death, two memorial services were held to celebrate Chweneyagae's life and career, giving friends, family and fans a space to honour the legacy of the versatile actor. His contribution to the arts has left an indelible mark, with "Tsotsi" standing as a notable highlight. This film, directed by Gavin Hood and based on Athol Fugard's acclaimed novel, follows the journey of a young boy navigating the harsh realities of life in Johannesburg's townships. "Tsotsi" tells the poignant story of a car thief who finds a baby in the stolen vehicle, forcing him to confront his own life choices. The film not only gained critical acclaim but also earned Chweneyagae an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. "Tsotsi" stars Chweneyagae alongside Terry Pheto, Kenneth Nkosi, Jerry Mofokeng and Rapulana Seiphemo. The film began its Oscar journey with victories at the Edinburgh Film Festival and the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, culminating in a heartwarming moment at the 2006 Oscars when Will Smith presented the Best Foreign Language Film award to a visibly emotional Gavin Hood.
